How many women need to tell you that abuse of power for sexual coercion is traumatizing and, even if there's some question about the letter of the law applying here, the more important human truth is that it IS functionally an attack or assault on you as a person, on your personhood and rights. The law lags behind the social change that recognizes harm to marginalized groups, we know this.

This whole "we need to establish fine gradations of traumatic actions" thing is a) tiresome, b) is masking the fact that you have talked over several women in the last 30 minutes of this thread, c) is also masking the fact that what women are saying is "STOP BEING SHITTY TO WOMEN, IN WAYS OF ALL MAGNITUDES, BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL ALIKE IN THEIR SHITTINESS AND YOU KNOW IT AND ARE DOING/ALLOWING IT BY CHOICE."

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)

he asked permission in all of them

just asking "can i masturbate in front of you?" is already fucking traumatizing, he's such a piece of shit.

omar little, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:17 (eight years ago)

It's not about the other person saying "yes" or "no", it's about not putting people in that situation in the first place when there's a) no basis/precedent for that behavior in the context of that relationship and b) a clear power imbalance. xxp

you're a pretty shitty person fyi and i'm done here. i said my piece. i think probably a lot more ppl agree w/ me than are willing to say. that's fine. it's far from the first time.

Yes. It is so damn weird. Imagine just being normal and hanging out and someone asking this. I honestly think that a lot of people would be so horrified/shocked that they wouldn't even know what to do and would just freeze.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:23 (eight years ago)

Mordy you are being obtuse about the nature of consent in these situations.

I'll admit that on a gut level Weinstein seems way "worse", but that's speaking as a str8 male, and I'm willing to be told I'm wrong on it, and it also seems like a supremely unimportant point right now.

or at the very least they gave off unclear signals (giggling instead of saying no when he asked them)

Newsflash: women often respond to the grotesque suggestions of men with uncomfortable laughter and an inability to instantly say "No," like literally everybody in the world knows this.

Anyway the lurkers support me in email.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)

ppl have already PM'd me saying they agree but are afraid of speaking up i mean not shocking considering the level of judginess and fear around anything that even suggests that you condone this kind of gross behavior, or the fear that someone will weaponize her identity/ideology to put you in your place. not to mention all the fps you'll surely incur. xxpz

like u guys act like i'm new to this message board. i've been getting yelled at for holding non-hegemonic opinions for probably over a decade now.

Mordy, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

who's weaponizing their identity now?

Yeah, actually, I'm not going to hide behind the 'posts you had second thoughts about' thread. Your in orbit attack post was pretty much completely indefensible, Mordy.

after about a decade of interacting w/ her i disagree i don't think she's v nice but it's really off-topic.

great hill to die on, mordy

that's a better statement than anyone else has given out so far. he needs to go away for a while now.

also: fuck a dave becky for telling those women not to talk about what happened to them in public! wtf? fuck that guy.

This seems self-evident to me, even without b) that sort of proposition instinctively codes as harassment to me. I'm not even really sure what the counter-argument is tbh

x-post IO isn't obligated to be nice to you or anyone else.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:34 (eight years ago)

Not being "nice" doesn't make her a "shitty person". At all.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

"that's a better statement than anyone else has given out so far."

to be fair, he is a top-notch professional when it comes to feeling guilty about his actions. he has built a career around it. that could actually be dialogue from one of his shows.

scott seward, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

no, being condescending, dismissive, flippant, and bullying makes her shitty.

Mordy, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

And, as said earlier, don't get to 'did that really happen' until later.

Many xposts, nm.

he just needs to go away full stop tbh - once you decide jizzing in front of unwilling women is how will choose to use the power you’ve accumulated from your talent, you shouldn’t get to come back

drinkmaster sealcup at yr service (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)

I get what Mordy is saying, but

1) abuse of power is not exactly illegal, particularly if she says no

2) these are only the ones we have specific details of. The illegal ones are most likely not much in the public domain yet.

Mark G, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)

Yeah of course he was going to write the right words in a statement. The only glaringly disingenuous part is "I learned yesterday the extent to which..."

it's cool to disagree w/Mordy and point out how/why he's wrong here, but feel like that quickly devolves into "mordy you are human garbage" quickly and predictably in ilxville

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:40 (eight years ago)

his apology elides his circle of enablers and him threatening people's livelihoods if they make a stink about his gross actions. shit apology by a shit man.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:40 (eight years ago)

jesus now i'm afraid he's going to turn this into money with a big apology tour and that feeling bad about it in public actually turns him on.

scott seward, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:41 (eight years ago)

yeah the 'i learned yesterday' part is utter horseshit

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:41 (eight years ago)

i like IO a lot, though she doesn't need validating from the likes of me.

but if she steams you enough to call her a shitty person on a thread in response to her talking about the way women react to unwanted sexual advances i mean that's your problem and you might want to consider why you said that line at that moment.

omar little, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:42 (eight years ago)

3) if there are no actual assaults or rapes in Weinsteins cases, it comes down to how much respect and goodwill he has in his pouch. None. Forget it. He's toast.

Dude, literally no one said or implied this afaict. I have no general problem with Mordy and I strongly disagree with much of what he's posted itt this morning.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:48 (eight years ago)

I was going to say something about all of this but I think the conversation has run away from me and the window has closed.

Anyway. I think his behavior was shitty, the admission is about as good as one could reasonably expect it to be, and I really, really hope going forward that we as a society spend some time figuring out how to resocialize so that abuse isn't rewarded.

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:48 (eight years ago)

i shouldn't have insulted io no matter how i feel and i apologize. i was already steaming over another interaction we had recently that i bit my tongue over and i felt her big caps and "you're talking over woman!" accusations here were bad faith but really i should never make things personal no matter what. i'm sorry for making it personal, io.

Mordy, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:50 (eight years ago)

...the extent. He learned yesterday the extent of the impact. Doesn't seem like utter horseshit to say that imo?

Evan, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:59 (eight years ago)

Tbh I was mostly motivated by the fact that both ENBB and La Lechera had already spoken on the exact point of debate and were being ignored, over-explained to, or having someone else post exactly what they just said w/o acknowledgement.

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:01 (eight years ago)

I get what you're saying but he's a smart guy, he's done a lot of thinking about this topic for his comedy, you'd think he'd be able to draw some conclusions.
