i think this vs Mel Gibson is a bit different, in that Gibson's can unfortunately be easily chalked up by many to drunken rants or alcoholism or whatever.

monday morning quarterbacking the now-vindicated gawker story seems really weird given the fact that i seriously doubt today's NYT story would have even happened had the gawker story not happened first

Will Jen Kirkman speak out and how are all of Louis' angry guy fellow comedians going to treat this?

Though he apologized for his one time comment to me, I will no longer casually call Louie a friend. I can't support what I now KNOW are his contributions to the power dynamic in this business.

I was fucked over many times by Jezebel and the Daily Beast. People saying I said things I didn't say. If you want to choose not to believe me, great. But this is why women don't talk about ANYTHING. So I'm done. The end.

He also took a plea deal after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend

i sortof wonder if part of why hes gone to some alternative distribution models (selling specials, horace & pete, etc) thru his own website or w/e is cuz he saw this coming & wanted to get as much $ as possible while he could; its incredibly foreseeable now that netflix, fx, etc may cut all ties

I know this is a sidetrack but everything I've read about the Arbuckle case points pretty conclusively towards his innocence

I wonder if what happens in episode 5 of the new season of One Mississippi is... well, "inspired by" doesn't seem like the right phrase, but... about Louis CK?

I tried to watch that show but it was a bit too low-key/laugh free

I also kinda feel like Louie's core audience is more likely to care about this stuff enough to abandon him than Gibson's.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:55 (six years ago) link

does gibson really have a 'core audience' anyway

of course he does!

anyway, looks like Louis' movie is gonna get ditched: http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/the-wrap/article/Louis-CK-Film-Release-Under-Careful-12345365.php

C.K. plays a successful Hollywood type whose 17-year-old daughter starts a sexual relationship with an esteemed director in his 60s (many critics out of TIFF likened the character, played by John Malkovich, to Woody Allen). C.K.’s character has to weigh his lifelong admiration for the character against his child’s innocence.

lol it's like.. does he? really? huh

if there's any type of story that really speaks to me it's stories about successful Hollywood types and their moral confusion.

mel gibson is billed above title in a christmas comedy this year

two days ago he walked out of Australian breakfast radio promo for this (in LA) and threw such a rage tantrum bcz his car wasn't outside, that the hosts immediately talked on air about him being "a bit mad"

So, that Louis CK film has been iced for reasons other than LCK's behavior, is what it looks like.

There is one bit of one of his stand up that I don't remember 100% well and where he talks about he is always thinking about sex and see a librarian and immediately thinks of nasty sex stuff. At a dinner a week later, half of my friends where like 'oh yeah i'm totally like that' and how it seemed like every male person I knew was a psychotic sex addict maniac.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 10 November 2017 02:44 (six years ago) link

In that same bit he talks about how women wouldn't understand or empathize [with men's depraved sexual fantasies] which is so not otm

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Friday, 10 November 2017 02:53 (six years ago) link

With all this stuff I'm honestly starting to think men are all just driven around by their dicks and cant control it. Wanking like monkeys. It is depressing as fuck.

A lot of it comes down to making a conscious effort to be something other than a slavering, id-driven maniac. Becoming a properly socialized person takes some work and honest reflection, and some people aren't going to see the value in doing the work until and unless not doing the work impacts them adversely.

I think not sexually assaulting people comes rather easy to most of us. There has probably been effort and reflection involved, however, in fine-tuning my speech and rhetoric so that no one is unintentionally offended or made to feel uncomfortable

Yep. The idea that this is just "how men are" has to be resisted. It is not how men are. It is not how men act whenever they can get away with it. It is how men act and are when something is badly wrong with them.

It seems obvious now that Louis CK legitimized being a slavering id-driven maniac throughout his series and stand ups.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 10 November 2017 04:06 (six years ago) link

Individuals and the people who raise them need to stop pretending that e.g. empathy, respect for the autonomy and personhood of others, etc. are things that will just work themselves out. People who came before us put a lot of thought and work into figuring out what this whole 'civilization' thing should entail, and we can't ride on their coattails and pretend that everyone just naturally gets it. Because clearly not everyone naturally gets it.

Isn't his standup more about the clash between his Id and his superego, and how exhausting the constant battle is?
Which makes it more disappointing that he (allegedly?) behaves like this in real life.

Being a comedian seems like a constant pushing against the bounds of what's acceptable to think, to say, etc., so it doesn't entirely surprise me that someone could get their signals crossed and confuse real sex with performance and what's hilarious and subversive vs. just gross and inappropriate, what's self-abuse vs. harassment, etc. Not at all defending LCK's actions, BTW, I just think his situation is different from Weinstein, which sounds more plainly like rape.

there is a howard stern interview on youtube where he talks about his misadventures with prostitutes that is pretty sad. i mean i guess he's going for his patented honest/sad/hilarious thing but it just seems sad.

scott seward, Friday, 10 November 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

i guess one thing is that just because you talk in a self-flagellating manner laced w/jokes about how much of a dick you are, that doesn't make you a better person. it doesn't give you permission to continue to be a dick for the art.
