I don't either, but I'm pretty sure that I won't find room on my ballot for him above the many directors who managed at least two great films.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)
Me neither but it's a good nomination, people might want to vote for him. Pretty sure a lot of people consider harper lee one of the greatest novelists too

Craig R. Baxley
Unless the point was the juxtaposition, not seeing any first-unit director credits here.
Although his stunt and second unit credits are way more plentiful, Baxley does have 33 1st unit director credits on imdb (mostly tv and DTV), but the reason I listed him is from 1988 to 1991, he directed three of my favorite action movies ever: Action Jackson, I Come in Peace, and Stone Cold.

Question that goes around in circles forever: I assume "greatest" means your personal favourites, as opposed to some dispassionate attempt to weigh film history (in which case, you may as well just reprint TSPDT's list).
Tougher for me will be whether to vote for who are my favourite right now, or to step back and take a longer view. Specifically, I'm talking about Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma, and other American '70s directors. They made a few films long ago that profoundly affected me, followed by three decades of almost uninterrupted disappointment (to the degree that I stopped being disappointed at some point).
― clemenza, Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:27 (eight years ago)
I can't separate greatest from personal favorites, but that's me.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 11 November 2017 05:59 (eight years ago)
me neither, highly suspicious of any objective 'canon' but obviously there are many artists and works of art that many, many people love
― flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 06:04 (eight years ago)
I can. Clair Denis may be my favorite currently working director but I wouldn't call her the greatest. Haneke is truly great for me but inexplicably hated on ILX while being seen as one of the greats or thee great outside of this bubble. \
or maybe I'm reinforcing your point.
