Would you ever order a margherita pizza?

It's rare that I order anything other than margherita, it's definitely the yardstick, often the cheapest, often the best.

Also I sent Colette this thread and when she saw this list:

Margherita
Vegetarian
chilli Beef
Ham & Mushroom
Lamb & Mint
Bacon & Brie
Grilled peppers & Haloumi
Pepperoni
Pesto & Pepper
BBQ Pulled Pork
BBQ Chicken
Blue cheese, rocket and Balsamic Glaze
Goats cheese and Red onion
Ham hock and Edam
Port salut and Peppardew peppers

she genuinely assumed it was someone's joke list of worst possible options to put on pizzas rather than a serious list. Actually maybe it is just a joke? The ham hock and edam surely can't be real?

I would order a margherita pizza and then add pepperoni and sausage to it because, generally speaking, I want every pizza I eat to have pepperoni and sausage on it.

wait hold up, ham hock and edam????? dammit do I have to read this thread now

i'm usually not into indie toppings but i like the pumpkin and prosciutto pizza at this joint up the street

omar little, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:14 (six years ago) link

although this is probably giving me the biggest giggles: Blue cheese, rocket and Balsamic Glaze

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:14 (six years ago) link

honestly that one is a bit weird but tbh I would eat almost all/any of these

Simon H., Monday, 6 November 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

I don't actually know what rocket is

Simon H., Monday, 6 November 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

IRL lesson learned, don't ever order a spicy pizza called "The Ring Burner"

omar little, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

lamb on pizza seems like a bit of a chore

fresh arugula on a pizza is delicious but blue cheese? no

arugula

marcos, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:16 (six years ago) link

ah

I mean I like arugula! have yall really never seen a wackier pizza menu than this?

Simon H., Monday, 6 November 2017 19:17 (six years ago) link

"ham hock and Edam" seems weirdly specific

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link

Also, "bacon and brie" as a pizza better not be on a tomato-based sauce

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:19 (six years ago) link

"ham and mushroom" sounds like someone wanted to make a savory Hawaiian pizza

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:20 (six years ago) link

i love bbq but it does not belong on a pizza imo

marcos, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:20 (six years ago) link

right, is nothing more offensive than bbq + cheese and bread?!

oh wait no that's delicious

Simon H., Monday, 6 November 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

my only experience w/blue cheese + pizza was when i was on the east coast and you'd get these really doughy and soft giant pizzas and they'd come with a bowl of blue cheese on the side (usually you'd get some hot wings too) and you'd dip everything in that gunk.

omar little, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

BBQ on pizza is gross af. You don't mix sauces.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

Um, a BBQ pizza substitutes BBQ sauce for the base, otherwise someone is fucking up.

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 6 November 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

DJP gets it

Simon H., Monday, 6 November 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link

I am usually a pizza traditionalist but some of the best pizzas I've ever had were a thin crust BBQ chicken pizza with light BBQ sauce as the base and, my gold standard non-traditional pizza I've never seen recreated, a taco pizza with a base refried beans topped with seasoned taco beef, black olives, cheddar and mozzarella cheese with fresh lettuce, sour cream and salsa added to the top post-oven.

On the flip side, I've tried several different attempts at tandoori chicken pizza and no

enjoying the idea that toppings could obscure someone serving you a pizza based on a large ritz cracker with ketchup on top

if you want to make a cheap decent pizza at home i actually recommend using the lavash flatbreads from Trader Joe's as a crust, they crisp up in an oven really nicely at about 400 degrees. a little sauce, a little cheese, some basil, some cooked sausage. Bellissimo!

omar little, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link

i remind everybody that the best accompaniment to pizza is a side of ketchup so i was at dinner with a britisher. she ordered a prawn and rocket pizza. when it came, she put ketchup on it. I have pics

, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:35 (six years ago) link

Heh I find that gross but then again I can't be on my high horse too much cause whatever topping I have on my pizza I will proceed to ruin it w hot sauce

considering that margherita is the standard by which pizzerias and pizza itself can and should be judged, I would not hesitate to order one at any time.

inspired by this thread, tt and I are sitting in a pizza restaurant right now

we have based our order on a reading of this thread

she has ordered the margherita and I have ordered a pizza with salmon, mascarpone and rocket as three of its principal ingredients

heinz "taco sauce" is the necessary condiment to put on it
