you should always dump every foodstuff in the household onto a pizza to maximize nutritional value

i never ordered two slices of "margherita" and never knew anyone who did... was that an option???

I don't know if I've ever seen a legitimate margherita available by the slice. It's generally the very difference cheese pizza that's available by the slice. I suspect a margherita slice wouldn't take as well to reheating; margherita pies also don't hold together as well as a cheese pie which I imagine would make it more difficult to sell by the slice.

"different" not "difference"

I judge a Mexican place by its cheese-only nachos. Sick of people ruining nachos by putting other tasty ingredients on them!!

I can't speak for Italy, but nachos have not been on the menu of any Mexican restaurant I've been to in New York.

early rejecter, Monday, 6 November 2017 17:33 (eight years ago)

It’s actually spelled chillillilli.

anyway on a serious note strikes me that ordering a margherita is akin to ordering a cucumber roll at a top sushi place - trying to get a feel for how they do the rice, assembly, etc. before moving on to the more serious stuff.

as always with food threads, particularly pizza ones, posts by people outside the US should probably be a different color, be marked somehow, or ideally be subject to moderation before being posted and likely deleted

I judge a Mexican place by its cheese-only nachos. Sick of people ruining nachos by putting other tasty ingredients on them!!

Similarly, I like a good al pastor or chicken taco with maybe cilantro and salsa, but none of the extra other toppings that can turn Mexican into synonymous with sour cream and goo.

Eazy, Monday, 6 November 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

There's not often tomato sauce, cheese, basil, garlic & crust that are so much better on their own that you'd choose it over another option on the menu that expands on those ingredients with added detail.
If you can get it by the slice, it's a different story.

I also don't order basic pasta + sauce dishes at restaurants either. Very rarely do they justify $14.99, yet somehow they get away with charging that price at millions of boring Italian restaurants. However, there's a few places in the city that are very much worth it.

guys it's ok to admit that you just don't like pizza

sleepingbag, Monday, 6 November 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

If you're in Naples, by all means order the margarita, preferably with bufala mozzarella. It will be the best pizza you've ever eaten. If you're at a place that throws tomato slices on a cheese pizza and calls that a margarita, avoid at all costs.

o. nate, Monday, 6 November 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

al pastor? salsa??? I always order just a tortilla filled with cilantro and onions to get a feel for a tacqueria.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 6 November 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

Voted Y as in Y the hell would you even ask this but I think I might get kicked off the team if I admit that, although margherita is obv delicious, I have a feeling you can also judge the quality of a pizzeria by... the other pizzas that they make

It's rare that I order anything other than margherita, it's definitely the yardstick, often the cheapest, often the best.

Also I sent Colette this thread and when she saw this list:

Margherita
Vegetarian
chilli Beef
Ham & Mushroom
Lamb & Mint
Bacon & Brie
Grilled peppers & Haloumi
Pepperoni
Pesto & Pepper
BBQ Pulled Pork
BBQ Chicken
Blue cheese, rocket and Balsamic Glaze
Goats cheese and Red onion
Ham hock and Edam
Port salut and Peppardew peppers

she genuinely assumed it was someone's joke list of worst possible options to put on pizzas rather than a serious list. Actually maybe it is just a joke? The ham hock and edam surely can't be real?

toby, Monday, 6 November 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

I would order a margherita pizza and then add pepperoni and sausage to it because, generally speaking, I want every pizza I eat to have pepperoni and sausage on it.
