Would you ever order a margherita pizza?

I pretty much always order a margherita at a fancy/snobby/aspirational pizza place - the kind that brags about their 00 flour and san marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzeralla - to establish a baseline level of quality. I'd never order one from a delivery place.

Seriously. It's the gold (white red green) standard. And yeah, it needs basil (green).

It is the basic test of your cheese, your sauce and your crust. All three need to be on point.

in america this is called "cheese pizza" and i don't think i've ever ordered an entire cheese pizza ever in my life

if we're talking SLICES though, it is by far my most ordered slice and i love it, though usually i am adding chili flakes, oregano, parmesan.. so maybe i do not actually love it as much as i am saying i do

feel like if you're going thru the trouble of making a pizza, why not throw actual toppings on to increase the nutritional value. veggie pizza for me has, like, veggies on it.

Eating more plants is helping with my diabetes.

I think of "cheese" pizza as being more or less covered with cheese, barring the edge. Margherita has globs of fresh mozzarella that leave a lot of the fresh/chunk tomato sauce exposed.

here's what I would pick off that menu, for a party

Margherita -- see thread

Pepperoni -- meat requirement

Blue cheese, rocket and Balsamic Glaze -- balsamic's too sweet usually but people love this

Port salut and Peppardew peppers -- this sounds amazing to me so idgaf if I'm the only one who eats it

you should always dump every foodstuff in the household onto a pizza to maximize nutritional value

I do just about the same thing unperson does, but I do it by only eating one meal a day for 5/7ths of the week

I rarely go for a margherita myself because it's just not enough food for a growing boy like me, and it gets cold quickly (I am not a cold pizza guy), but it can be completely fantastic when I'm not that hungry and when basic is exactly what I'm after

as for using a margherita as a yardstick by which to judge a pizzeria's fundamentals, I guess so, but this seems more theoretical than practical, if I want to check out a new band I go with the album that has the song I like, not the album with the most stripped-down arrangement & production

Isn't that a circular reference? 'Pie gets used because of pizzapaia which comes about from Sicilians trying to say pie after they saw it written down about pizza'.

How about this for a cobbled together etymology? Almost all Italian American immigration is from the 'Two Sicilies' - effectively Naples and Sicily. When the round, Neapolitan, shape started to take hold and define what pizza was, the rectangular, Sicilian shape tried to claim it was just as good - literally 'pizza paia', or pizza equal. This became 'pie' in English to differentiate between the shapes and over the intervening years got (mistakenly) applied to both kinds. Sounds as plausible as anything else.

I don't know if it's circular so much as redundant, which sounds like just the sort of thing Americans at the turn of the century would do with this exotic Italian import.
