it's like complaining about displays of autism on a year-end poll thread― sarahell

agreed.

Yeah, completely agreed on this. Not gonna FP sarahell as she's generally awesome, but this is very much not okay.

(disagree on 'shitposting' as a term, though, it's perfectly descriptive.)

seriously though, what would have been a non-bullshit way to summarize and refer to complaints about said behavior? I honestly didn't intend that to be an "edgy" word choice
― sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:48 (six years ago) link
autism is a real thing and using it as a zing against ppl whose content or posting style you dislike is offensive. i also FP any reference to asperger's done in this way, for the same reason. thankfully i feel like, as with the r-word, they've been on the decline around these parts. good poster, bad post.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:13 (six years ago) link
No, I was using it to describe content and posting styles that resemble behavior of someone on the Autism Spectrum. No like/dislike involved. Just descriptive.

I'm apologizing because I can see now how it could easily be interpreted as a pejorative, zingy post ... even though I didn't intend it as a pejorative, just as a description
― sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link
For me, I don't think of obsessive, list-making behaviour as stereotypically "autistic" - particularly as understanding of the spectrum (and gender differences within it) has developed, it doesn't ring true, and seems reductive to the point of offensiveness. Putting it on a thread like this definitely makes it read as a zingy put-down, but even if it were somewhere else I'd still feel very uneasy about it.
― emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link
Also the dual edge of pathologising personality traits/diminishing difficulties that people with disorders actually have to live with. It's just... not good.

For me, I don't think of obsessive, list-making behaviour as stereotypically "autistic"
it has historically been stereotyped this way on ilx. that's what I was referring to.
― sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link
and my point was merely, to complain about "obsessive, list-making behaviour" in the context of a thread where people make lists and then compile them and discuss the results, is a bit absurd. And I have been guilty of that complaining in the past, and I am aware of the absurdity of my past behavior.

How many fucking layers
i guess "obsessive", "trainspottery", "filing", "stamp-collecting", "nerdy" i use in different contexts to try and do the job of describing compulsive nit-picky cataloguing but none of them are perfect. something to do with Pokemons might work. or killing butterflies.

Sorry to break topic here, and excuse my ignorance, but— does the flagged poster receive any sort of notice when they have been flagged?
I've never received any such thing myself, so maybe I've never been flagged. But, I think a notification system for when one has been flagged would be of some sort of use. Kind of as a semi-polite way of saying, "Hey, cut it out."
― he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:43 (six years ago) link
Did you receive like eight or nine notifications just now? Hang on, let me try again.
― Evening Shade and Designing Women will not be seen tonight (Old Lunch), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link
iirc mods sometimes email people when they are approaching 51, but it's been done case-by-case
my suggestion is to keep the 51 number, but allow each of us to have two active FPs on any given poster, instead of one.
― sleeve, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:46 (six years ago) link
No, you don't receive a notification - you can post on the "request my SB/FP number" thread and if a mod's around they can tell you how many you've got (this isn't really an officially mod-sanctioned thread but it's also not frowned upon as far as I'm aware). The mods will also message you if you're approaching 51, but at that point it should probably be relatively clear from other posters what you've done that's been riling people.
xp with sleeve
― emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:51 (six years ago) link
I may not have agreed in every instance, but approximately zero of the instances where someone was 51-ed and banned have been surprising. Unless you're super un-self-aware, I would guess you'd probably know when it's at least a likelihood.

the spectrum is broad (that's why the term "spectrum" was brought into use) & calling things "autistic" is reductive, dismissive, and offensive, and I hope you'll reconsider your position on using it in this way.
