There are no legitimate complaints against sarahell. We shouldn’t chase away our few remaining distinctive posters.

Treeship, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:09 (eight years ago)

sarahell is a great poster and ilx wouldnt be the same without her but that was a dumb post imo

marcos, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:12 (eight years ago)

Mordy, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:12 (eight years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)

exactly, nobody is getting chased anywhere. People can exercise their moaning /fp privileges without folk screaming "witch hunt!".

calzino, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:16 (eight years ago)

if the complaints are legitimate, ilx has ways to try and shut that whole situation down iirc

proton, neutron, electron and crouton (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

No legit complaints about me, iirc? I'm perfect.

Perfect.

it's like complaining about displays of autism on a year-end poll thread
― sarahell

wow this is, like, a bullshit way to put that
― she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi)

agreed.

― mod

Yeah, completely agreed on this. Not gonna FP sarahell as she's generally awesome, but this is very much not okay.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 16:25 (eight years ago)

(disagree on 'shitposting' as a term, though, it's perfectly descriptive.)

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 16:27 (eight years ago)

not gonna lie, this made me think

Unnaresting

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:09 (eight years ago)

sry that post was in honor of banned edgelord sarahell, rip

flopson, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:13 (eight years ago)

seriously though, what would have been a non-bullshit way to summarize and refer to complaints about said behavior? I honestly didn't intend that to be an "edgy" word choice

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

autism is a real thing and using it as a zing against ppl whose content or posting style you dislike is offensive. i also FP any reference to asperger's done in this way, for the same reason. thankfully i feel like, as with the r-word, they've been on the decline around these parts. good poster, bad post.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:13 (eight years ago)

No, I was using it to describe content and posting styles that resemble behavior of someone on the Autism Spectrum. No like/dislike involved. Just descriptive.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:18 (eight years ago)

51 is a mystical number
change it at your own peril
this is what the ancients of ilx decreed

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)

I'm apologizing because I can see now how it could easily be interpreted as a pejorative, zingy post ... even though I didn't intend it as a pejorative, just as a description

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

For me, I don't think of obsessive, list-making behaviour as stereotypically "autistic" - particularly as understanding of the spectrum (and gender differences within it) has developed, it doesn't ring true, and seems reductive to the point of offensiveness. Putting it on a thread like this definitely makes it read as a zingy put-down, but even if it were somewhere else I'd still feel very uneasy about it.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

Also the dual edge of pathologising personality traits/diminishing difficulties that people with disorders actually have to live with. It's just... not good.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

(I'm sure other people can put this stuff better than me, but those are the things that stick out to me.)

emil.y, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:33 (eight years ago)

I could put it better but perhaps let's keep the peace

imago, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:34 (eight years ago)

:)

marcos, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

For me, I don't think of obsessive, list-making behaviour as stereotypically "autistic"

it has historically been stereotyped this way on ilx. that's what I was referring to.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 November 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

and my point was merely, to complain about "obsessive, list-making behaviour" in the context of a thread where people make lists and then compile them and discuss the results, is a bit absurd. And I have been guilty of that complaining in the past, and I am aware of the absurdity of my past behavior.

Sure...

brimstead, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:01 (eight years ago)

How many fucking layers

brimstead, Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:01 (eight years ago)

i guess "obsessive", "trainspottery", "filing", "stamp-collecting", "nerdy" i use in different contexts to try and do the job of describing compulsive nit-picky cataloguing but none of them are perfect. something to do with Pokemons might work. or killing butterflies.

Pope Urban the Legend (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:05 (eight years ago)

"nobjectivism" might have some mileage

Pope Urban the Legend (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)

I like 'anal gazing' myself.

Evening Shade and Designing Women will not be seen tonight (Old Lunch), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:17 (eight years ago)

I like Strindberg's phrase to describe his own nobjectivism, 'knappologi' (trans. 'buttonology').
