so much new music sounds like the fucking 80s these days, regardless of genre - just 80s synth patches all over everything - which really puts me off.

plus, you need the first u.s. press for the cover variation. i dig this cover:

i bought that blinded by science EP in 1983. at Caldor. blew my mind! the future!

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:56 (eight years ago)

love how scott's enthusiasm for stuff he does care about overtakes the things you don't care about thread

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:00 (eight years ago)

sorry, i should really think about something i don't care about. there is a lot, actually.

i don't care about network news at all. that's one thing. i never think about it. i haven't had cable for years. i look at the new york times headlines and i watch pbs newshour on youtube. and that's about it. and i lurkread ilx rolling grump thread.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)

when i think of all the hours i wasted over the years hating cnn. getting rid of cable was such a lifesaver.

i do miss sports though sometimes....

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

ya getting rid of cable was great. my internet provider tries to lure me back to it by offering a package that includes cable for just $15 more than I pay for internet alone but still not gonna get sucked into that.
for sports I either pull up a pirated feed or go to a bar. watching big games in public space is so much better.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)

i'm totally stuck in the 70's. i'm happy there. and it is endlessly inspiring.

agree

marcos, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:50 (eight years ago)

I find it hard to care about music from before about '94 myself

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 27 October 2017 19:03 (eight years ago)

Stranger things is fine, it's just not worth the intend adulation it gets. There's zero original content in that show, it's just good entertainment. About as deep as a kiddie pool but lots of fun

anything that happens in the art world

it me, Friday, 27 October 2017 20:32 (eight years ago)

the art world is a dead zone. burn it all to the ground. so empty. rich people fussing over their hair. make every museum a Target.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 20:41 (eight years ago)

nah we don't need any more Targets

Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 20:43 (eight years ago)

I always thought the point of this thread is "This is something I simply am not devoting mental energy to, without implicit judgement" and less "fuck this stupid stuff that people love and the people that love it"?

yeah this is exactly where i was coming from, e.g. i watched series 1 of stranger things, it was fine, people lost their shit, they want everyone to really really love it, i just don't care.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 27 October 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

i didn't care about twin peaks at all. didn't watch. didn't read about it. despite being a fan of the original show and lynch. i am just not a reunion fan.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)

every Lynch fan should watch it

Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:05 (eight years ago)

Re art world, don't want it to burn, not angry—I just don't care. Yes it's corrupt, that's not what bothers me. In fact, I'm much more concerned with corruption in banking, where I care a lot.

I think I just realized a couple years ago, while going through the motions at a friend's opening, that I've never felt any emotion toward a painting at all, not even technical admiration.

Guess I've just lost the energy to fake it.

it me, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:11 (eight years ago)

I care a lot up to about Monet. After that it gets rough. I have no idea where to find good contemporary painting. It feels like paintings are hardly needed nowadays.

jmm, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

hey rich assholes need to spend their money on *something*

Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)

yeah scott the new season of twin peaks is anything but a 'reunion' (at least as that term is most commonly used i.e. more of the same). you'd probably dig it if you really dislike reunion/nostalgia wankfests, and especially if you're a fan of later Lynch.

flappy bird, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:28 (eight years ago)

also yeah i liked Stranger Things last year & will probably watch the new one but the over the top adulation was depressing... how long are we going to have to live thru 80s nostalgia? I Love the 80s aired 15 years ago ffs

flappy bird, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:29 (eight years ago)

xxp the thing is that usually I care a lot about what rich assholes spend their money on

it me, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:29 (eight years ago)

i will no doubt watch twin peaks. if its on hulu or netflix. i just didn't care about it before, during, and after like all the peakheads.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:51 (eight years ago)

i do think david lynch is the coolest. after all these years. i can't think of many american filmmakers i even care about any more. which fits on this thread too!

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:53 (eight years ago)

if its on hulu or netflix

kinda doubt this will happen tbh

Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 21:57 (eight years ago)

the old twin peaks is on netflix.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 22:02 (eight years ago)

Unless you still get Netflix dvds. ;)

Needed?

Art world = the big money big gallery art world?

There's so much great art today, it's just scattered all over the place and can be challenging to find. I rarely go to art galleries because I just don't trust them to have anyone interesting. But I find a lot of new artists who are really refreshing, perhaps partly because they're not part of some bigger scene.
I haven't been keeping up very well but it always makes me feel good when I do. As a fantasy fan, it's always more exciting than anything in film or comics.

Don't really understand the hate for The National but I haven't heard them in years.

I'm watching twin peaks s1 for the first time right now, will probably watch the new one when I'm done

brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 22:56 (eight years ago)

oh wait there's a season two a well. and the movie. I'll have to watch those before I watch the new series. How riveting is this post

brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 22:57 (eight years ago)

how long are we going to have to live thru 80s nostalgia? I Love the 80s aired 15 years ago ffs

ahhhh dislike of 80s nostalgia really takes me back to the early 2000s, what a time that was...

One thing I think is truly in the spirit of this thread: people's medical problems, their adventures in finding doctors, their opinions of different hospitals, what procedures they had done, etc. Maybe this changes as you get older? I cannot fucking stand getting trapped into one of these conversations. To me doctors are auto mechanics, I want them to fix the problem so I can be on my way. I'm not going to discuss new brake pads in detail with my friends.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 16:54 (eight years ago)

I don't care about most of the things that I ostensibly care about but since I almost never get to bond with others, including close ones, over the things that matter to me the most, I basically care because I need contact.

That the Reformation is supposedly 500 years old as of today. This is just the Educational Comics version of history.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

Really though what is it with well-off older white people, talking about internists and hospitals like they're fucking restaurants?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:05 (eight years ago)

well they start spending as much time there as they do in restaurants, make sense

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

i know a lot of people who talk about their therapist, wearing their "dealing with their issues" like a badge of honor.

drejelire, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:29 (eight years ago)

yeah, there's something a bit disingenuous and maybe narcissistic about that kind of talk
