A single ^ for me. I have nothing else to watch right now, so I'll give it a shot.

Mediocre writing/plotting with good atmosphere, some very good acting and a mesmerizing lead. Got tired of it after 4 episodes.

It seems to be rekindling interest in Vangelis-esque synth sounds, so there's that.

I'm way too old and tired to try to be edgy, it's just not that good a show.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 27 October 2017 15:14 (eight years ago)
New music. Not a judgment but, after years of intensely caring about and trying to keep up with The Scene, the contrast of the last several years where I have basically no wherewithal to seek out contemporary sounds has been glaring. But these Dockers sure are comfortable, and my lawn looks fantastic.
― Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Friday, 27 October 2017 15:22 (eight years ago)
Definitely have experienced a "nothing new under the sun" effect with music in the last few years. Still get surprised by something once in a while.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 27 October 2017 15:23 (eight years ago)
Yeah, I've definitely heard good new stuff but only incidentally and through no effort on my part. My musical effort is all concentrated on the mounds of good stuff from the past I still have yet to explore.

Granted, but I started it for things like what everyone else is having at the restaurant, not big events in the media and current events

yeah it's basically become "things that are buzzing right now"

It became that immediately xp DL your OP was the restaurant thing but your second post was the jimmy saville scandal so I'm afraid the 600,000 posts from the dimension where the only tweets are "oh is sportsball on?" tweets - the worst dimension - those are on you, my friend

there are a lot of things i don't care about. i like this thread
― marcos, Friday, 27 October 2017 15:57 (eight years ago)
I HAVE OPINIONS it's not as much of a disaster as the "irrationally angry" thread, which started off with a brilliant and promising opening posts and devolved into whining about people
― brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 16:26 (eight years ago)
don't care about evaluating the quality of threads about not caring about things
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 27 October 2017 16:29 (eight years ago)
how far we have fallen from that Thusrday morning 5 years ago where someone complained about people talking at a restaurant
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 27 October 2017 16:30 (eight years ago)
the uniquely irrational anger of receiving a "where's george" dollar bill is a beautiful, cosmic thing
― brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 16:33 (eight years ago)
I always thought the point of this thread is "This is something I simply am not devoting mental energy to, without implicit judgement" and less "fuck this stupid stuff that people love and the people that love it"?
Fwiw I moderately enjoyed ST but agree with man alive. I'm just going to not think about it.

"New music"
i think i just forget about new music! because old. i would have to hear it to care about it. every once in a while i will become interested in "new". like that cool Orange Milk tape label or something like that. or i will put on a new rap playlist on Spotify while i am playing my PS4 game and i will go OMG I LOVE NEW RAP I LOVE KODAK BLACK! but that lasts for like a day. i don't keep up with it. i'm not really into time these days. which i guess is one of the pleasures of getting older. anything that has come out in the 21st century is new to me.
The National fucking blow though. that much i know. yuck. some serious fiddling while rome burns divorced dad rock snooze. pretty much every record i ever play is better than that band. i listen to a lot of music by the feelies and carcass and red krayola and xmal deutschland though. so my standards are pretty high. most square people don't have very high standards. the gino vanelli record i just played has SO much more life in it than anything i've heard by The National. the Thomas Dolby record i'm listening to right now is a friggin' masterpiece in comparison.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 16:59 (eight years ago)
the national are a blight on western civilization
so much old music to listen to. i'm going to listen to miles davis' big fun for the first time when i get home tonight.
― brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:00 (eight years ago)
(also, the original u.k. issue of the golden age of wireless is different than the original u.s. issue and the original u.s. issue is different than the later u.s. issue when they changed everything completely and added she blinded me with science and one of our submarines. you kinda need all three versions. i would call that album a masterpiece of sorts. in any version. so cool!)
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)
It was mostly through metal that I was actively keeping up with new music the last few years, and I got bored with that this year. These days I'm most interested in exploring the massive amounts of classical music that I don't know anything about. I still occasionally find irresistible new stuff like the Partner album through ILM.
― jmm, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:09 (eight years ago)
(for instance the original u.s. issue has the song "Leipzig" on it which is NOT on the original u.k. album but it doesn't have "The Wreck Of The Fairchild" on it which the original album did. who makes these kinds of decisions?)
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:11 (eight years ago)
haha thx I was gonna ask what the differences were!
― Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:11 (eight years ago)
yeah, i am out of the metal loop too. i read decibel every month just to keep up a little bit. i'll get around to everything sooner or later. it will be there unless i die.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:13 (eight years ago)
I'm much more interested in what everybody is having at the restaurant than Stranger Things 2. But I'm stuck around the house for a couple days coming up and will watch it because it's there and probably not terrible.
I'm as interested in new music as I've ever been which tbh is something I treasure. I think it's probably closely tied with my desire to make music.
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 27 October 2017 17:15 (eight years ago)
it's kinda cool with the Dolby album though. listening to the u.k. version and original u.s. version would be two different experiences. the song orders are different. different songs. kinda like my fave colourfield album. the u.k. version of that is very gloomy and pastoral and the u.s. version is a total rock action thing! it's a completely different album. i prefer the u.s. one.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:17 (eight years ago)
i'm watching stranger things with the kids. maybe a sunday marathon. not really excited but curious. we loved the first season.
Re. new music, I think 'new' indie guitar music is Done. Capital D. Like, empirically worse to yesteryear compared to the equivalents in metal, pop, hip-hop, dance, country, whatever.

Yes. Just started going deeper into '70s jazz in the last couple of years and it's like my ears finally found the music they were created to hear.
― Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Friday, 27 October 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)
you guys are in for some good shit
― Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)
i'm totally stuck in the 70's. i'm happy there. and it is endlessly inspiring. i'm listening to The Three Degrees right now. so much better than The National.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)
i just prefer when new music sounds like the future. that's my preference. being a teen all through the 80's EVERYTHING sounded like the future. and 70's music will often still sound like the future to me. a better future than now anyway. but there is always great new stuff! i look for the stuff that sends me to Mars. i don't want my future to sound like the 90's. i should actually listen to more Future. i like him. ALSO, i recently found out that he has the best real name in the music industry: Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:32 (eight years ago)
for real, someone just came in the store two seconds ago and handed me a 7-inch picture disc of heaven 17's Temptation/We Live So Fast! they were so totally the future when i saw them perform on Solid Gold. The National could never write a song as cool as We Live So Fast in a million years. best present anyone has given me in a long time.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)
scott I agree w/you regarding those T Dolby records, Milton Parker broke all those track variations down on the Dolby thread once. I think if you have the US Wireless and that Blinded By Science EP then you get the UK tracks? but I would totally buy three different versions.
― sleeve, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:38 (eight years ago)
so much new music sounds like the fucking 80s these days, regardless of genre - just 80s synth patches all over everything - which really puts me off.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:39 (eight years ago)
plus, you need the first u.s. press for the cover variation. i dig this cover:

i bought that blinded by science EP in 1983. at Caldor. blew my mind! the future!

love how scott's enthusiasm for stuff he does care about overtakes the things you don't care about thread
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:00 (eight years ago)
sorry, i should really think about something i don't care about. there is a lot, actually.
i don't care about network news at all. that's one thing. i never think about it. i haven't had cable for years. i look at the new york times headlines and i watch pbs newshour on youtube. and that's about it. and i lurkread ilx rolling grump thread.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)
when i think of all the hours i wasted over the years hating cnn. getting rid of cable was such a lifesaver.
i do miss sports though sometimes....
― scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)
ya getting rid of cable was great. my internet provider tries to lure me back to it by offering a package that includes cable for just $15 more than I pay for internet alone but still not gonna get sucked into that. for sports I either pull up a pirated feed or go to a bar. watching big games in public space is so much better.

Stranger things is fine, it's just not worth the intend adulation it gets. There's zero original content in that show, it's just good entertainment. About as deep as a kiddie pool but lots of fun
