slightly hard for me to judge cos i binge-watched the first two seasons whilst high but i haven't really been watching it for lulz since then, just enjoying the stories

pulled pork state of mind (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 October 2017 09:18 (eight years ago)

Y'all crazy. Season 3 was good as hell, except for the relatively limp finale -- which tbf seemed to be teeing up a specific narrative arc for S4

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Saturday, 14 October 2017 14:53 (eight years ago)

The finale was funny, just not at the level of the previous episodes. I might have liked it a little more than most because I freakin love Keith David as the President

definitely less LOLs

― flopson, Saturday, 14 October 2017 06:31 (fourteen hours ago) Permalink

there were some really, really lame and labored jokes in those first two seasons...even 'total rickall' which is one of my favorite episodes, just lazy shit like 'ooohhh i get it like the butler did it' that fills like time filler more than an actual punchline

i never really died laughing as i did during some of the best moments of s1&2. maybe i should have said powerLOLs qua hoos. still funny and good but i kept waiting to lose my shit at something. maybe the teaser e1 is the only exception. still think it was good, my xp is similar to NV's

seemed to be teeing up a specific narrative arc for S4

eh every time they've hinted at this its ended up being a red herring, wouldnt hold my breath

flopson, Saturday, 14 October 2017 21:49 (eight years ago)

idk i never got powerlols exactly it was always more clever than funny

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 14 October 2017 22:09 (eight years ago)

Yeah that but it's still v good, I don't see a drop off, just development

pulled pork state of mind (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 October 2017 22:31 (eight years ago)

NV OTM, I don't watch this show for the LOLs but for the stories

Estella, Damm (stevie), Sunday, 15 October 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

And yes, s03e10 was a dip but I've enjoyed the stories this season a huge amount. Pickle Rick FTW.

Estella, Damm (stevie), Sunday, 15 October 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)

I really think this season was a noticeable step down. Still enjoyable creative, but I’m going full episodes without a single chuckle. I guess ppl here mostly think it’s better than ever, but yeah, definitely disagree.

circa1916, Sunday, 15 October 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

Also I kinda hated Pickle Rick and how it seemed to be consciously designed to be a catch phrase/action figure/mascot or whatever. And the ~darkness~ this season seemed strangely forced.

circa1916, Sunday, 15 October 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

didn't feel forced at all! if anything it succeeded despite seeming like exactly the kind of thing that *wouldn't* be a catch phrase

it's been good! first ep better than second imo.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:01 (six years ago)

Yeah I think my boy's seen it and said the first ep was a winner

The Man Who Was Thirsty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:03 (six years ago)

Felt like season 3 was real hit or miss and honestly just too misanthropic at times for my own tastes. hopefully season 4 is a little lighter.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:35 (six years ago)

s4e2 is a mix of "life means nothing" and relentless scatalogical humor, so maybe skip that one

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:38 (six years ago)

I think about the awfulness of Rick a lot but then I remember how many other cartoon assholes I enjoy and I kinda don't care what the writerly intentions are, I have to see him as a portrait of a shitbag and probably a critique of a section of the fanbase

The Man Who Was Thirsty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:39 (six years ago)

Yep

The Man Who Was Thirsty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:42 (six years ago)

the show pretty explicitly criticizes rick. i know there's this media critique that even condemning some sorts of behavior valorizes + promotes them nonetheless just by portraying them (all those shows where you identify with tony soprano or malcolm's dad) but i don't know how the show could do more to demonstrate that they think rick's ideology is hollow and empty and leads to a life of misery?

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:45 (six years ago)

I think that's right but then he's portrayed as uber-capable in every area beyond the emotional and you can see why idiots don't realise he's not supposed to be a hero

The Man Who Was Thirsty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 18:50 (six years ago)

(all those shows where you identify with tony soprano or malcolm's dad)

lol it thought you were actually talking about Malcolm In The Middle here and I was like "I never watched that show, was the dad really such a bad guy??"

exceeding my expectations so far, toilet jokes aside.

Enjoyed it but it felt weirdly rushed somehow? It rarely makes me lol anyway, it's a different kind of pleasure. Still v happy there's new stuff.

The Man Who Was Thirsty (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 November 2019 10:50 (six years ago)

three weeks pass...

loved the most recent ep, think it's the best this season. pretty much every aspect of the snake planet made me laugh. good Jerry plot too

Vinnie, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 08:10 (six years ago)

the silent snake planet sci-fi movie satires were pretty great

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 14:56 (six years ago)

Easily my favorite of the season, maybe my all-time favorite R&M episode. "Snake jazz" killed me.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 15:12 (six years ago)

best part was all the snakes watching in awe as Hissler's palace overflows with time travelling snake corpses

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 15:33 (six years ago)

i came with "Hissler" on my own, btw.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 15:35 (six years ago)

the heist episode was so good, i watched it a second time

i dont know if its from the new season or not

The World According To.... (Michael B), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 15:35 (six years ago)

Snake Planet was hilarious.

yeah i lolled at that, also when the warning note to Snake Lincoln just said "SSSS"

I thought the heist episode (this season) was really funny and I also thought the dragon episode was funny. I mean, they've all been funny so far.

just saw my first ep of this, the heist ep, that was some silly funny shit. i’m rather mystified by who the audience is tho, references are old and rapid. if i existed in 2014 when thred started i’d have like 6 years of viewing by which to suss it out.

in a mellow, balmy way (Hunt3r), Monday, 20 January 2020 05:04 (six years ago)

I don't get some of the references and I'm older than most of the viewing audience, so I imagine much of the audience doesn't either. The sheer volume of stuff - plot, dialogue, visuals, and gags - means it's still enjoyable even if you miss some things

That said, I am a little surprised the show is as popular as it is

Vinnie, Monday, 20 January 2020 07:47 (six years ago)

I think they threw in too many ephemeral goods (boglins, ecto-coolers, etc.) this season to avoid future mulan sauce incidents, where fanatics went after the single ephemeral good they mentioned.
