a lot of people who think "bipartisanship" is a value think the compromise is itself an ideal rather than just the end-result of an antagonistic process.

There are too many danged lefty podcasts now lol, I haven't even gotten to Citations Needed yet. I did see that Ta-Nehisi Coates was on Intercepted which I'll probably check out at some point.

just listening to TNC talk about this strong zero-sum assumption among trump whites vs. obama presidency.

not so much emphasizing that it was zero sum, but adverse to whites particularly.

I really enjoyed Matt's response (on the Dig) to the question about women's experience of the show -- basically "Yeah, I totally understand why a lot of them don't like it, and it's fine. We're supportive of feminism, but that doesn't mean women have to like listening to us."

yeah, uh, that sucks, there's really no two ways about it. But some of the tweeters jumping on the pile are just anti-socialist shitheads anyway and gleeful for an excuse. As though Chapo invented DSA.

yeah i mean I can't even begin to peel back all of their layers of irony to get at what the word "libs" is supposed to be signifying there, especially next to "statue" so all I took away from it was just that they were trivializing sexual assault.

Only thing I really have a problem with is them naming and bringing up Comet Ping Pong regularly still. It was in the Patton episode. I think I already said this upthread but you know, Comet Ping Pong is an actual business whose reputation & image has been seriously damaged by all this Pizzagate nonsense, and for them to contribute to that for a stupid & unfunny running joke pisses me off. maybe just because it's relatively local to me & have always known it as a sick music venue & a great restaurant. Stop hurting their business you fux
― flappy bird, Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:15 (eight years ago)
I don't think anyone listening to CTH is avoiding Comet Ping Pong because they mention it? I thought it was a dumb pizza restaurant with a bad name but I'm increasingly interested in it
― mh, Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)
enh pizzagate is so insane I can't not find humor in it
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:17 (eight years ago)
I doubt they're really contributing to hurting the business (probably even helping), but I do feel like they didn't quite "get it" on Pizzagate, like they never really addressed the fact that there were a LOT of people who were quite deliberately in on it and not just hapless marks buying into conspiracy. It was a revenge scheme.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:17 (eight years ago)
All I know is that people spend a lot of time telling me that these guys are really great and funny and insightful and I should really check them out because they are a necessary voice in today's climate, to the point where I think "maybe I'm being overly defensive; I should give these guys a chance" and then something like that Cosby tweet happens.

not my point. By continuing to mention it & associate it with an insane conspiracy theory involving child trafficking and pedophilia, you're fucking the people that work there & play there. You're contributing to a false cultural narrative where people from out of town will go to DC, visit Comet Ping Pong & immediately associate it with crazy conspiracy theories. I mean especially after that guy went in and shot a hole in the ceiling last year. I really resent it. Obv. Chapo is not the main driver behind this particular smear, I just find it especially dumb & inconsiderate of the people that work there, not only for their business but their safety.

Sure, but you don't have to name the business that was falsely accused of it. You can leave out the name & the insanity of the conspiracy theory remains. have a ball

Cosby star tweet is so stupid & unfunny & another instance of them showing exactly who they are: unsocialized nerds that spend/spent too much time online & on Weird Twitter. they're friends with the Cum Town guys, who, you know, say what you will, but they're comedians, they have their thing & they stick to it. Chapo is both a vanguard political podcast that has had demonstrable effects on leftist & DSA interest in the USA but also they're Weird Twitter nerds that lack social graces & try to be funny & fail often. This is going to be a perpetual conversation as long as the show is on.

Everyone has their own line. I mean yeah I find that Volkswagen ad hilarious, also the Cum Town quote, which is from nearly a year ago when the story was still ongoing. But Chapo keeps Comet Ping Pong in their regular rotation of running gags & promoted that fan-made poster with the restaurant's logo on it. I just think it's stupid. also Whiney idk where u live but imagine a sick music venue in yr town got accused of the stuff CPP did, yeah ha ha ha it was funny for a bit but a guy fucking shot the place up
― flappy bird, Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:50 (eight years ago)
difference obviously is Cum Town isn't representing anyone but themselves. Chapo is obv different... they're gonna keep hobbling themselves with boneheaded moves & statements & unforced errors like this bc they keep trying to be edgy & funny like their actual comedian friends & falling flat on their faces.

@whiney - the surging leftist & DSA movement in the USA like I said above. they're trying to pull a Jon Stewart cop-out by saying it's a comedy show, which imo it primarily isn't- I think it was Simon who linked to that reddit post from a guy that was completely apolitical in a small town, found Chapo, and then six months later he's organizing his own local chapter of the DSA & getting members.

fair takeaway but I really don't think this is the case: it's a generational thing, they are this moment's Daily Show, they're only comparable in that they're both comedy/political shows mostly consumed by young people. the difference is in their politics which are decidedly more leftist than the Daily Show ever was.

Their intentions don't exist in a vacuum, they have a power & influence beyond a typical podcast, and to occlude or brush off that power is disingenuous.
