I'm really enjoying those dudes, who have at least a good grasp of policy.

For the interested, Felix is barely on it. Mostly pretty standard "Trump/the repubs are bad" shit
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 23:42 (eight years ago)
did trump and the republicans stop being bad or something?
― bodak horseman (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 23:55 (eight years ago)
Yes, that's definitely the point I was going for.

listened to the patton oswalt one on a run earlier this evening and...it was good! having an actual comedian on definitely helped.
― gbx, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 04:19 (eight years ago)
Patton's story about HP Lovecraft's grave was so funny
― JRN, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 05:09 (eight years ago)
Patton's pop-cult political takes were very entertaining. Nice that he pointed out some things he liked in Wonder Woman, as opposed to the standard how dare! reaction ppl have when someone criticises that movie.
Also even in a medium as nerdy as podcasts I don't think I'd heard a Dave Sim reference before.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 08:29 (eight years ago)
this was a good ep. lol "You're looking for the monster man!". i enjoyed the theory that people are losing the capacity for abstract thought, everything has become more literal, or is at least taken that way. it's an interesting thought!

yeah she did, i remember when this thread started thinking it was long overdue. how many of y'all started listening to CTH before the election? i only heard it in late November

That jeet heer piece is infuriatingly bad and concern-trolly
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)
Oh it's the one from a few months ago. Yeah I guess Jeet had quota to fill.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:30 (eight years ago)
Yeah he got more grief for it than he probably deserved, which is too bad cause he's one of the few non-lefties I'd actually like to hear on CTH
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:32 (eight years ago)
i know, i like him, i was looking forward to him going on the show, seemed like it was going to happen for a while & then Felix told him to get David Frum's dick out of his mouth
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:33 (eight years ago)
Menaker's statement was so obviously aimed at party leadership, not "Clinton supporters," and "bend the knee" is so obviously not a sexual idiom. Then we get three obviously cynical and wrong tweets, one implying that Menaker's statement was directed at "women and people of color," as though women and people of color don't comprise a huge part of the left wing of the party and the Clinton wing has some kind of monopoly on them. Then another, by a 100% in-the-tank Clintonite, deliberately and cynically misreads "bend the knee" as some kind of misogynist innuendo. Then Jeet coyly sidesteps by saying "Well these are misinterpretations, but the fact that the statement *could* be misinterpreted that way just shows..."
I don't know what the fuck he means by "dominance politics" anyway. Politics is always a contest for power.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:34 (eight years ago)
yeah they weathered that storm pretty well & came out fine, the "bend the knee" thing didn't stick for long. & i really wouldn't take any of Jeet's criticisms seriously, bc they're just regurgitated & the whole piece is so lukewarm i am positive he had a deadline & had to turn something in real quick
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:36 (eight years ago)
I forgot what the context was... it was something where Clintonite/centrist Dems had totally failed (probably universal healthcare...oh! no I'm p sure it was when Trump said 'alt-left') but Will referenced the "bend the knee" thing a few months ago in a way that showed they'd come out stronger/their point was proven
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 17:39 (eight years ago)
it helped their case that the season of GOT that immediately followed featured characters saying "bend the knee" a ton lol

I mean, there are compromises, but I think a lot of people who think "bipartisanship" is a value think the compromise is itself an ideal rather than just the end-result of an antagonistic process.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 18:41 (eight years ago)
right, which in many ways is a serious copout - sticking by your beliefs & positions no matter the tsoris is difficult! especially when so many people and orgs could be throwing money your way so you can talk out of both sides of your mouth

There are too many danged lefty podcasts now lol, I haven't even gotten to Citations Needed yet. I did see that Ta-Nehisi Coates was on Intercepted which I'll probably check out at some point.

a tooth and claw division of finite resources
the end-result of an antagonistic process... ding ding ding
just listening to TNC talk about this strong zero-sum assumption among trump whites vs. obama presidency.
― zeitgeist: hotttest anonytakes wish for or promise hyper violence (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 20:30 (eight years ago)
not so much emphasizing that it was zero sum, but adverse to whites particularly.

I really enjoyed Matt's response (on the Dig) to the question about women's experience of the show -- basically "Yeah, I totally understand why a lot of them don't like it, and it's fine. We're supportive of feminism, but that doesn't mean women have to like listening to us."

Yeah, definitely. I mean they are kind of assholes at times, but I think they direct their assholish energy very productively on the whole.

yeah, uh, that sucks, there's really no two ways about it. But some of the tweeters jumping on the pile are just anti-socialist shitheads anyway and gleeful for an excuse. As though Chapo invented DSA.
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:00 (eight years ago)
yeah i mean I can't even begin to peel back all of their layers of irony to get at what the word "libs" is supposed to be signifying there, especially next to "statue" so all I took away from it was just that they were trivializing sexual assault.

ugh i like the show & listen regularly but goddamn they are so fucking nerdy & have the most stilted & awkward sense of humor ever, it's of a piece with their bizarre problem with mispronouncing words, it's like they were never socialized before 2016
― flappy bird, Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)
the ongoing Jared from Subway jokes are bad, dude is a child rapist, stop it
― mh, Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)
like how far away are they from the Rick & Morty maniacs that they spent 20+ minutes (rightly) mocking a few days ago
xp re: Jared... shit is just dumb & not funny & played the fuck out.

Only thing I really have a problem with is them naming and bringing up Comet Ping Pong regularly still. It was in the Patton episode. I think I already said this upthread but you know, Comet Ping Pong is an actual business whose reputation & image has been seriously damaged by all this Pizzagate nonsense, and for them to contribute to that for a stupid & unfunny running joke pisses me off. maybe just because it's relatively local to me & have always known it as a sick music venue & a great restaurant. Stop hurting their business you fux
