and of course me, for introducing you to the superlative method of cooking pasta

qualx, Friday, 6 October 2017 06:30 (eight years ago)

I would say "The whole of ILX"

Its big enough so that if I post something I feel like saying, there's enough people around to see it and react to it, but not too many as could misinterpret it and go global with something I didn't men.

Mark G, Friday, 6 October 2017 06:51 (eight years ago)

I didn't mean!

Tsk.

Mark G, Friday, 6 October 2017 06:51 (eight years ago)

the qualx pasta thread taught me to fink about the rolling boil/still boil false dichotomy, or something. Who knows, I probably still do it wrong.

scott seward, for starting the 'global warming's terrifying new math' thread five years ago and thereby plunging me into a deep existential terror from which i have never fully recovered

scott seward for the Eagles listening thread - talk about a tour of duty. we went THROUGH some shit

scott has pointed me in the direction of a lot of good music. I wouldn't say he's transformed my life though.

probably Morbz or Alfred tbh just in terms of getting me to read/watch things I either didn't know about or hadn't previously given much thought to

At the lowest of times, when I see no way forward, the ilx jingle for Hurting always comes to mind.

I guess Tep would be my answer — he's been an influence on my approach to food and drink the past dozen years — but really more for posts on his blogs and FB than on ILX.

WilliamC, Friday, 6 October 2017 21:16 (eight years ago)

'transformative' is too strong, but djp has introduced me to some a+ industrial musics, made me think about race more/differently, and is funny as shit

"influence" is strong b/c i have no idea how he does what he does nor could i begin to approach it but dude is amazing

the movie assholes haven't actually inspired me to watch better movies but i do look down on a wider range of people now

qualx, Saturday, 7 October 2017 04:45 (eight years ago)

What do you mean qualx

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 7 October 2017 04:53 (eight years ago)

Feels weird to look down on anyone on ilx - this site is an abbreviation of who people are. I'm much different outside of here and not so eloquent or funny when posting. I find it hopeless to assume someone's character only by online posts

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 7 October 2017 04:58 (eight years ago)

lol i mean people on the internet in general

qualx, Saturday, 7 October 2017 05:04 (eight years ago)

all those ILXoRz who lured me out to Seattle that one year. 2007? was it that long ago? that totally had a profound effect on me. it really helped build my confidence when i really needed that in a serious way. just getting on a plane was huge for me. flying and public speaking! two of my biggest fears. everything about it was some sort of step forward. it was hard and so rewarding. there are too many people to even name who led me there and who i was fortunate enough to spend time with. but i never would have done anything like that in a million years without the encouragement of the people here. it was so scary and it really did change me. everyone was so nice. ned has always been so encouraging and positive over the years toward me and i really appreciate that so much. it means a lot. i feel the same way about filthy phil freeman putting me in that book of his. that was also huge and a lifeline to a wider world that i needed desperately at the time. it also taught me that i could do better work than i thought i could. again, a push forward. EVERYONE i've met from here - and i've met dozens of people irl - has been SO nice and funny and fun to talk to. no exceptions. so many smart people. i always feel enriched after a conversation with them. i even get to hang out with tarfumes the escape goat sometimes. and learn new keith moon info.

I learnt a lot from Ned about how to behave online. Not saying it's necessarily always taken, but I'm a lot less likely to be self-centred/dickish thanks to him. Cheers

albvivertine, Saturday, 7 October 2017 05:20 (eight years ago)

Wow, was about to say Scott Seward was/is the poster I gain insight/humour/musical tips from most, when he does it once again b4 I can even answer the original thread question. Over the years have also learned ALOT from Alfred, Ned, and Tyler too. But S.W. is the main one. And I look forward to a long future of more hip knowledge and long distance friendships from/with all of you. Mentioned and otherwise.

Ultimately though its hard to just say one person. I mean for various reasons Geir, Whieny (sic)Bimble (rip),that insane woman who was hawking her thousand dollar CD of tuneless hippie um "music". The Killing Joke guy. Over the years all these and more enriched my life in many, many ways over the years. ILX is easily one of the most enjoyable, and interesting sites I suspect I'll ever peruse. Thanks all of you. Re:Marcos is right, it's near impossible to pick just one.
