i live in a densely populated residential neighborhood, tons of families, little kids everywhere. someone posts in our FB community group that they saw some dude walking around a residential street with a shotgun and so they called the cops to be safe. cue ~200 posts about how it's perfectly legal and you shouldn't have infringed this guy's rights and induced panic in the community and should've been better informed about our second amendment rights. jfc

The excerpt I posted upthread was just a very small sampling of the 250+ posts about a mere 30-40 beds in an underutilized hotel being temporarily devoted to homeless people. So many people fall back on "the children" -- "There's a school down the road!" No shut the fuck up, you just don't want to see homeless people walking around. They're not a danger to "the children."
― IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 6 October 2017 15:33 (eight years ago)
tbf maybe half of the posts supported the guy who called the cops, many folks saying "who cares if it's legal, don't be an asshole"
― marcos, Friday, 6 October 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)
yeah, similarly there were an encouraging number of posts supportive of the homeless

I saw a guy open carrying at a grocery store. He looked to be about 20, had long greasy hair and an anime T-shirt. I was with my 2-year old. I wasn't exactly scared, just bummed out. Why this dude imagined a scenario in which he would have to shoot someone in a grocery store was beyond me. Coincidentally I wound up accidentally stealing an avocado (blame the kid) and I imagined the dude filling me full of lead in the parking lot. And yes I did go back and pay for it.

in my neighborhood the lost animals are found most of the time so it's pretty heartwarming

xp - maybe he was afraid someone would steal his gun if he left it in his vehicle ?

Loud profane music on C____ St
There’s a teen party going on C____ St. with several kids walking around the house. I called the Sheriffs office and complained after listening to “F__ dis N__ r” rap music coming through my closed windows. After 3 hrs I called back they told me the officer couldn’t find the house. I drove over myself and found several cars parked on the north side of the street about 400 ft from L____ Rd. I asked dispatch for the name of the responding officer and he put me on hold and then disconnected the call. Why the hell do I have to be subjected to this type of total disregard for others every weekend? If it isn’t loud music, it’s fireworks, or loud motorcycles or loud diesel trucks, or the damn ice cream truck! Thanks police departments great job

Today I saw the following:
Smokey outside today. Can really smell the smoke. Hills covered. Anyone knows what's going on!
Bear in mind that this is Oakland, where 40 miles to the north everything is on fire, and has been since Sunday night.

NextDoor tumblrs are going to be great. Since ND is seemingly more private than other social media, people sure like to let their hair down on there.

My neighbor gave me this video of three kids ringing their doorbell and running away. Wondering if they did this to anyone else. It was around 12:15 a.m. Sunday. If anyone recognizes them please let us know.

Every other week there's a "Does anyone know what's up with the helicopters flying over ___?!" post. It's almost always a traffic reporter.

tbf, sometimes the original post does not have the price, and after people ask the op edits the original to include it.

I hadn't logged into nextdoor for months but did so the other day to make sure a cat I saw near my place wasn't lost. At some point in the last year it's hit the critical mass to become a nightmare hellscape of people making the same post over and over (do you know of a good leaf removal service?) and weird opinions about what the police should and should not do, most of which are insanely bad.
― mh, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 18:46 (eight years ago)
since i'm also signed up for my hometown nextdoor i get a double dose and it's amazing how little difference there is between posts on Los Angeles nextdoor and posts on rural IL nextdoor.

To the Man with 8 Eight Vehicles on Oakland and Harrison AvesOne of our neighbors has eight different vehicles parked on Oakland and Harrison Ave. They include vans, older cars and motorcycles.
I've had my catalytic converter stolen ($1400), back window smashed and have had the contents of the car gone through 4 or 5 times. In each instance it was parked closer to the 580 than I would have liked to do because this guy with 8 vehicles takes up all the spaces in front of my house.
I know who it is and where he lives. He is also a registered sex offender and pedophile. As far as I know he has paid his debt to society for his crimes, but he's screwing the rest of us over with his vehicles.
If you, the subject of this post, are here, please stop hoarding the extremely limited parking spaces in our neighborhood. Rent a garage. If the individual isn't here and/or not open to finding a compromise, I will be taking action to correct the situation whatever that means.
I just want to park my truck without it being destroyed!
― sarahell, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)
parking is a hot topic on nextdoor right now
someone has created a poll, "Should the city require residential parking permits?" which I unwittingly voted in, causing me to get subscribed to the thread. I don't want to go back to unsubscribe because I know the comments would just make me insane, so I'm just quickly swiping email messages away before I read them
I am sure I'm going to feel like looking at it soon to laugh in glee at the chaos, though
― mh, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:18 (eight years ago)
fwiw there's no way my city is large enough or congested enough to need such permits, it's just a person on a short stretch of road angry that people have the nerve to park (badly) on the street
― mh, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:19 (eight years ago)
You have arguments over whether your town needs parking permits. My neighborhood argues about whether or not we should be allowed to park in the front yard.
― pplains, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:48 (eight years ago)
imo if you allow yard parking the street is less congested, win-win
― mh, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 19:52 (eight years ago)
does pedophile and/or registered sex offender status come into play in these parking arguments?
― sarahell, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 20:53 (eight years ago)

Just spotted two iguanas in the alley off Harvey. Is this normal?
I live in the East Columbia area near the spot where a man shot off one of his fingers last year in a gun fight. Tonight as I was having my X-Mas box of wine in the deck I spotted two lizard like beasts wrestling over what appeared to be a Purina Dog Food bag. I was at a loss thinking that this could be a hallucination but my dog saw them as well and he had less wine than me

J** B********
Max and Leo are 11 months old, neutered, micro-chipped, and completely up to date with their shots. We've tried for 9 months to train our 4 year old dog to stop bothering them but we haven't had any success. We just want to find them a home with kind and caring owners, where they'll have a peaceful life. Please send a PM if you are interested.

Sorry the dog didn't learn to get along with them. I left my husband because his dog wouldn't leave my cat alone. I hope you can find them a wonderful forever home.

"Recently we've gotten feedback from our community that Facebook neighborhood groups are the worst thing ever – so you can expect to see much more of them in the coming months"
― Alba, Friday, 12 January 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)
I miss the ad hoc neighborhood groups that'd spring up and grow organically
and by organically, I mean some of them were so bad that friends would tell me things like "you have to join 'Townname People', it's got the most fucked up stuff"
so you end up with a conspicuous 10% of the group not actually from there, just there for the ride
― mh, Friday, 12 January 2018 17:13 (eight years ago)
on investigation, it appears there is now a second "Townname People - No Moderators" group set up in protest
I've got to find out what's going on here, I bet it's dramatic
― mh, Friday, 12 January 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)
I checked out the "no moderators" group and the first post was someone asking whether there was still going to be a pan-Asian grocery store set up in a campustown location that was formerly a pet store. First response was a poorly-formed "joke" combining the name of an american chinese restaurant dish with "meow."
so I'm guessing the no-moderators policy is to avoid the thought police who banned racists
