Models also remained split on Nate’s potential strengthening, they said.

The storm gained some strength through the morning, But as it crosses the Yucatan peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico, models disagree. Some show winds increasing by nearly 75 mph over the next 72 hours, while others indicate only a slight increase to a weak hurricane. Forecasters bumped up their forecast, while warning that the tricky forecast involving two land crossings could complicate projections.

Ophelia's 5-day cone has it possibly hitting Ireland as a tropical storm, been a while since that happened.

My lord, as I was sewing in my closet,
Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced;
No hat upon his head, his stockings fouled,
Ungartered, and down-gyvèd to his ankle,
Pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other,
And with a look so piteous in purport
As if he had been loosèd out of hell
To speak of horrors — he comes before me.

He took me by the wrist and held me hard.
Then goes he to the length of all his arm,
And, with his other hand thus o'er his brow,
He falls to such perusal of my face
As he would draw it. Long stayed he so.
At last, a little shaking of mine arm,
And thrice his head thus waving up and down,
He raised a sigh so piteous and profound
As it did seem to shatter all his bulk
And end his being. That done, he lets me go,
And, with his head over his shoulder turned,
He seem'd to find his way without his eyes,
For out o' doors he went without their helps
And to the last bended their light on me.

ten months pass...

It's important to remember that, while the forecast can still change, all signs point to #Florence being one of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history.

If you are in harm's way, act now to protect your family. Start your prep process. Help others. Do not underestimate this storm. pic.twitter.com/Kc3RjtelcS

Cool week for me to be flying east, hoping my New York to DC train is unmolested on Saturday. I assume my folks will have a basement flood to deal with again.

Anyway I hope everyone here in the coastal Carolinas makes it out of town and everyone else stays somewhat dry.

damn, I'm driving through Charlotte Saturday afternoon.

What is God trying to say with this hurricane? Have the conservative Christians that stink up the southeastern part of the US been able to interpret HIS Master Plan yet?

always great when hurricanes hit NC's coal ash ponds and hog waste pits

mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2018 18:15 (seven years ago)

not sure if that's facetious but environmental damage to hog lagoons is a fairly big deal, especially for the people who live near them, who are disproportionately black and/or lower-income

Expecting rivers of sewage and [drowned hogs](https://www.factoryfarmmap.org/#animal:hogs;location:US;year:2012).

In general though, so long as one is at least 20 ft in elevation above the coast and drainage, sheltering in place isn't a terrible idea. If you're on the coast, get out, storm surge is the killer.

I've been through maybe a dozen hurricanes, always a few dozen miles inland, and it was helpful to be on hand to empty out freezers/refrigerators during prolonged power outages and have a chainsaw to clear roads. Just make sure you've got plenty potable water, batteries/chargers for all the phones/radios/flashlights, and lots of insect repellent, as you may have to sleep rough. MREs aren't bad, but jugs of vodka and cartons of cigarettes are better trade goods.

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster announced a mandatory evacuation of the South Carolina coast on Monday. Eight counties along the coast would begin evacuating as of noon on Tuesday, McMaster said at a press briefing on Monday....

As of noon Tuesday, lanes will reverse on Interstate 26 from Charleston to Columbia and Highway 501 from Myrtle Beach. Highways 278 and 21 in Beaufort County will be ready for reversal as of noon, but officials will wait to make an order at that time.

Floyd was my favorite hurricane growing up. Our power was out for over a week.

what a delight!

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2018 21:12 (seven years ago)

The best hurricane scenario is when you endure the agony of preparation only to have the storm weaken or wobble a couple hundred miles from the expected impact point. Your power stays on and you get days off, sometimes more than two.

The worst hurricane scenario is when an Andrew hits, you dive into an interior closet with your family, and when you emerge the closet is the only thing left. This happened to my best friend's dad.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2018 21:14 (seven years ago)
