(bill almost certainly would have passed)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

Opponents of the measure say that the silencer provision, in particular, could make it harder to identify a shooter during an incident such as the one in Las Vegas.

But Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), the bill’s sponsor, said in an interview Monday that the silencer provision would have had little bearing on the massacre in Nevada — pointing to media reports that the shooter may have had more than a dozen firearms, some of which may have been illegal.

“He’s already breaking the law shooting an automatic weapon that wasn’t registered, so what’s going to stop him, had he chosen to shoot a suppressed weapon, to do that?” Duncan said. “The thing is, and the thing he probably realized is, it doesn’t make any difference — it’s still loud.”

I wonder how long we have until every American will be required to be constantly discharging at least one firearm (except while sleeping or using the restroom).

this is ridcolus (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

We should abolish all US laws. I mean, people are just gonna break them anyway, right?

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

Okay Jeff Duncan, can we talk about the more than a dozen maybe illegal firearms then. Or is this not a good time?

Actually 23 at the hotel, 19 at his home? Does any of this seem excessive? In any way?

Just out of curiosity: by the time the Constitution had been amended a second time, had weapons tech progressed beyond that shit where you had to tamp some gunpowder down into a gun before you could shoot it one time?

this is ridcolus (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

Except? Where do you think the phrase "Shoot the shit" comes from?

https://thinkprogress.org/united-nations-gay-death-penalty-36e6a5101ec9/

The United Nations approved a resolution Friday condemning the use of the death penalty in a discriminatory fashion, including its use to punish “apostasy, blasphemy, adultery, and consensual same-sex relations.” But the United States joined a minority of states who voted against it . . .

Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE were among the 13 countries that joined the United States in rejecting the resolution, which was introduced by Belgium, Benin, Costa Rica, France, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, and Switzerland. A total of 27 countries supported it.

The resolution notably doesn’t call for the end to the death penalty. It simply condemns its usage in a discriminatory fashion. Besides the implications for people with same-sex orientations, ILGA also notes that when used to punish adultery, the death penalty is disproportionately imposed on women.

nope. a well-trained soldier could fire at a rate of about one round per 90 seconds, until his gun got too hot and could explode in his hands or in his face.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/03/tom-price-ouster-paul-ryan-243413

John Kelly, the White House chief of staff, called the Wisconsin Republican minutes before the departure was announced Friday afternoon. It was a heads-up call, one White House official said.

Ryan urged Kelly to reconsider and touted the Georgia Republican’s experience in Congress and work in the administration, one of the people familiar with the call said.

Price has long had the speaker’s ear on policy matters and was part of Ryan’s old “Jedi Council,” a group of fiscal conservative rabble-rousers who used to powwow when Republicans were in the minority.

But Kelly made clear that Price was out, and the call quickly ended, one of the people said.

There's apparently a supposed prototype gun that's held up as proof that automatic/repeating fire(?) weapons did exist, experimentally, at the time of the constitution, and this one prototype gun has been held up in legal arguments and used as the basis for policy.

Soooo there's a BONKERS TWITTER THREAD that I can't find right now, in which someone reveals that the famous prototype gun is a FAKE, manufactured in fact BY HIS GRANDFATHER. It gets more bonkers from there. If anyone has seen it, pls link.

I wish news orgs would refrain from issuing headlines that mislead the reader into believing that Trump said something mind-blowingly offensive when there are so very many instances in any given day when similar headlines would be wholly accurate.

oh I definitely agree with this but the fact that the president is rushing to find the silver lining in a historic massacre seems a bit tone deaf to me, idk

Thank you for that, in orbit. I trust that an automatic weapons ban will be forthcoming now that we have the facts in order. No, wait, sorry, I forgot that we live in that other world.

“What is your death count as of this moment?” Trump said. “Sixteen people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud of all of your people, all of our people working together. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people. You can be very proud.”

Then, during a tour of the devastation, he told survivors to “have a good time.”

“Great to see you,” Trump added.

During a later appearance where he handed out supplies, the President “tossed rolls of paper towels into the crowd,” according to a White House pool report.

“There’s a lot of love in this room,” he said. “Great people.”

I agree; for instance, his comment today that Katrina was a 'real catastrophe'. I'm pretty sure I know what he meant; it sounds bad, but I don't think he meant it to be as bad as it sounds. He's just incapable of making anything sound good, ever.

It's not unimportant to call out the president on his basic inability to construct sentences in the language he's been using for seventy years, but it's maybe slightly more important to differentiate between instances where he clumsily cobbles words together as a showcase for his basic lack of humanity and instances where he trips over a box of magnetic poetry and accidentally assembles a sentence that could be mistaken for an example of the former.

i agree with this, but there's also a space in the middle of these two instances that shares aspects of both. for example, trump's notorious campaign announcement. the consensus transcription was "They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people" was an example where trump hovered between the two, imo. i think everyone's transcription of "they're rapists" was totally wrong. i think he really said was "they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, [and] their rapists." that was the cadence of his delivery and context of his message. that's also obviously a fucked up thing to say and single out (you can't imagine him ever highlighting the rapist immigrants from a country of white people), but it's different then a declarative "they're rapists." he's just so incredibly fucking stupid and careless that he somehow managed to say it in that way and then was also too dumb to explain it in a coherent way afterward.

KM that has bothered me as well. Nothing seems to matter, but if it did, I'd say it's important to criticize what was actually said rather than try to hear the worst possible interpretation of everything in order to keep the outrage fire burning as bright as possible.

i am starting to get a real panicky sense that the badness of the bad shit that is going on right now, attitudes towards migrants, respect for the dignity of fellow humans, the sense that people can collectively do anything positive, is going to accelerate into something quite a bit worse and i feel really powerless abt it :/

definitely not trying to blame the victims (the world) here, but since this was pretty much the first big wave of publicity surrounding the trump campaign and that quote was EVERYWHERE, and being mischaracterized everywhere, i think that it helped trump convince his dunce army that the media really was out to get him from the get go. they were likely going to end up voting for him anyway, i know. but still, i wish that hadn't happened.
