Finally finished the second season. Good stuff, it's all so cynical I can't tell if the sentimental music cues - Mazzy Star, Elliott Smith, NIN's "Hurt" - are part of the joke.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 14:02 (six years ago) link

Most of the Mortys are voiced just differently enough to distinguish them, but they're all still Morty.

Yeah this is an important point and I noticed it. Roiland's a pretty decent voice actor these days.

He's been the Mozart of voice actors since Adventure Time's Lemongrab days.

Saw that Harmon interview where he derides "The Purge" as "good enough" or something, and I thought, huh? I liked that one better than the Mad Max one, as far as riffs on movies go - or I like them equally - but more importantly, "The Purge" gave a satisfying payoff to seeing them in the exosuits every credit sequence. For that matter, the excellent rule of threes payoff when you hear a muffled "Feels Good" playing offscreen before they go on a rampage made me laugh my ass off.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Sunday, 8 October 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

I put just as much blame (or more) on McDonalds for trying to cash in on this tossoff in-joke, which they should have left at sending the creators some sauce or probably just making one tweet. The whole sitch is so dumb

Vinnie, Monday, 9 October 2017 00:41 (six years ago) link

In terms of the sauce cartoon itself, I feel like it fell off pretty hard after the citadel episode

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 9 October 2017 13:26 (six years ago) link

i liked morty's mindblowers but in general i agree. am really not a fan of rick's "i'm a cool dude drinkin martinis" stance, which feels like a a shift. he was always an alcoholic but it was always kinda scary and ambiguous, now it feels faintly fedora-ish (though i could be projecting this latest sauce thing onto it)

Well, at some point he basically exists as a God, right? It's hard to make that too compelling.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 9 October 2017 14:20 (six years ago) link

yeah they acknowledge that he's basically a god in the show's universe. As referenced below, and during basically the entire season finale

I like that they seem to be moving away from that idea by making him the low man on the totem pole in the Smith family--sure he can do anything, but he can't force his family to love and respect him. should be interesting to explore that

I'm still very uncomfy with the fact these guys did a pilot cartoon that literally involved a man making his grandson suck his dick to make a time machine work.

I like the show a lot, but this keeps really, really bugging me. It was disgusting.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 00:17 (six years ago) link

Not "these guys" (just Roiland), not a pilot, and eleven years ago, as a short joke in frustrated response to threats from Bill Cosby's lawyers. (Not that anyone oughtn't feel grossed out about it, but it isn't actually an intentional part of the development of "Rick & Morty," of which I've seen 3 or 4 episodes so am therefore a Nazi.)

In my experience and recollection, 18 year olds are on the whole pretty dumb, (even the ones with 'higher than average IQ'). They're not averse to making asses of themselves in public the name of some TV show they saw and showing off to their friends. They see this kind of thing as subversive and system-baiting, while the rest of the world looks on and says 'you dummies don't even get it'. I'm not defending this sort of thing, but it's more a reflection of people who are barely out of their teens getting turnt and getting out of control than anything to do with R&M.

Shat Parp (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 08:57 (six years ago) link

Admittedly all I've seen is that stupid copypasta of the guy who says he has R&M tattoos and the vid upthread of the bro screaming and jumping on the counter.. Did I miss much else?

I have had a visceral antipathy towards fandom of pretty much every stripe ever since buying a magazine about the history of Doctor Who when I was 12 and seeing pictures from a convention in the back; I loved the show, wanted to immerse myself in details about the stories and the production, even wanted to be the first American companion to appear on it, but I looked at the pictures of adults dressing up as the Doctor and his companions during a time period that wasn't Halloween and my overarching reaction was "this is not and never will be me".

So, when I see things like current fans harassing McDonald's employees for not having some special dipping sauce, my first reaction is always "who broke you?" and it's rare that I have a second one.

When I first found out about Comic Con (San Diego's), it was 1993, I was in grad school in OC, and I was going "Huh, there was a comic convention all this time in the city I pretty much grew up in? Seems like I missed out." Nowadays I'm all "Yeah...glad I never went down that road."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 October 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

As I get older I'm getting way more into cosplay & cons type stuff, and I still think this is fucking unbelievably stupid.

The Great Cornholio was the first thing I thought of when I saw this video, too.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 October 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

I went to a comic convention when I was a kid because I loved comics and it sounded like it would therefore be fun. Instead, it was a profoundly alienating experience as I realized I really had no interest in obsessively hunting down rare comics and collectibles. This convention was extremely small and tame compared to what they have now, which looks like the deepest pit of hell to me. Now you can chase down collectibles while muscling your way through a massive mob of cosplayers or wait endlessly in line to have some kind of geek hero worship experience. The kind of mentality you would need to endure and even enjoy this is exactly what it would take to drive hours to be the first in line for a sauce packet.

Moodles, Tuesday, 10 October 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

^ this is total bullshit. Go to SPX or TCAF or CXC or Short Run or CALA or Thought Bubble or Angoulême or Amadora de BD or BCGF or... (etc etc)

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 04:37 (six years ago) link

I mean, I'm sure there are smaller, less insane, and more fun conventions than the big name ones. And obviously many, many people enjoy these, which is fine. For me though, any comic convention of any size is going to be an alienating and unfun experience. I get that is mostly me, but I also believe that a strongly consumer-as-fan experience is inherently alienating.

I would like to meet the Hernandez bros some day though...
