Are the depts that are supposed to be helping restore things to a pre-storm level of functionality properly staffed? I thought those were the ones people had been saying for months hadn't been restaffed since transition.
Anyway hope everybody down that way is finding things slowly improving and there's nothing else going to hit over the rest of the season.

In situations like these, they bring in out of state help. For instance, a number of crews from Center point Energy here in Houston, having returned considerable service normally in the wake of Harvey (with assistance from imported crews from as far away as Illinois and Missouri), are in Florida working.

I'll be thrilled to have power back by this weekend, not sure how likely that is. Kind of feel stuck in a rut until it returns.

Anyway, can't complain about our power company. We started with 44% of their customer base having power on Monday morning, up to 75.8% right now.

Official Irma track shows that Orlando never got sustained hirricane winds. Was still more destructive here than Charley cos it was here longer but Charley brought much higher winds.
Imagining how much worse itd have been if the erroneous 11 pm report had come true.

I'm really worried this latest hurricane assault will get lost among all the other hurricane and earthquake damage. Puerto Rico did better than expected the first time around, but got hit hard by Maria (yet no deaths, right?). Still, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Caribbean ... it's hard to know where to donate money and how much.
As an aside, I was last in Puerto Rico maybe 5 or so years ago. I was shocked at how shoddy and distressed everything was, like it was beat up but never recovered. Museums unable to keep their doors open, parks closed, that sort of thing. I read somewhere that if Puerto Rico were a state, it'd be the poorest state in the USA.

PR was in really bad shape when I was there this past May. Lots of unrest and street demonstrations due to how hard it is to earn a living wage there.
Still a beautiful island, but this is really something they didn't need right now (or ever). The power grid is going to take a while to rebuild.
They really need the US govt's help, and well given what Trump said previously....yeah.

(CNN)All people living near the Guajataca River in northwest Puerto Rico should evacuate immediately because of an "imminent dam break," the National Weather Service in San Juan said Friday afternoon.
"All Areas surrounding the Guajataca River should evacuate NOW. Their lives are in DANGER! Please SHARE!" an earlier tweet said.
About 70,000 people in the area of the Guajataca Dam have been told to evacuate, National Guard spokeswoman Yennifer Alvarez told CNN's Leyla Santiago.

An acquaintance who is a community-theater producer in her 60s was in Puerto Rico...Posted last week along the lines of "we're going to ride out this hurricane"...and then the next day "the sun is out, I'm going to walk on the beach" and kind of blowing it off. Has been stuck at the airport now for days, with Saturday the earlier time out.
Hi again...___ here. We are still ok but getting more and more scared . Feeling more and more like a white collar prison. Down to one meal a day... and no beverages of any kind at local stores. Long gas lines and longer lines to get into grocery stores. There is an airfield available at local air force base. Only using it for military personnel. Asked how to get on those flights... crickets. Unfortunately Geraldo Rivera was able to fly in and report from our white collar prison. Do not believe what fox news is saying. Please. He is misrepresenting. I will try to continue to post. Don't know why we get online when we do. Usually no connection.

Models also remained split on Nate’s potential strengthening, they said.
The storm gained some strength through the morning, But as it crosses the Yucatan peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico, models disagree. Some show winds increasing by nearly 75 mph over the next 72 hours, while others indicate only a slight increase to a weak hurricane. Forecasters bumped up their forecast, while warning that the tricky forecast involving two land crossings could complicate projections.

My lord, as I was sewing in my closet,Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced; No hat upon his head, his stockings fouled,Ungartered, and down-gyvèd to his ankle,Pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other,And with a look so piteous in purportAs if he had been loosèd out of hellTo speak of horrors — he comes before me.
He took me by the wrist and held me hard. Then goes he to the length of all his arm,And, with his other hand thus o'er his brow,He falls to such perusal of my faceAs he would draw it. Long stayed he so.At last, a little shaking of mine arm,And thrice his head thus waving up and down,He raised a sigh so piteous and profoundAs it did seem to shatter all his bulkAnd end his being. That done, he lets me go,And, with his head over his shoulder turned,He seem'd to find his way without his eyes,For out o' doors he went without their helpsAnd to the last bended their light on me.
