I've seen what unlimited cans of Vienna sausage, the mephitic Florida heat, and lukewarm Bud will do to a man in 48 hours.

Dairy Queen was busy. the poor folks were understaffed as hell, we were appreciative for the food.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 19:26 (eight years ago)

Yeah that's the one thing - I asked him about the heat and he said that was pretty unbearable and really hard to sleep at night. :(

i just heard 35 accidents have happened due to the traffic lights being out (assholes just driving through them instead of treating like a 4-way stop). terrified of friends/family getting t-boned but I have no control over it so *sigh*.

at least they started putting in portable stop signs at them

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)

I feel quite embarrassed that the UK met office is persisting with naming our "storms". They were quite something a few years back, but in comparison to the disasterous carnage that has occurred in the Caribbean/US/Southern hemisphere, still quite like "is that a fly on my arm" in comparison.

calzino, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 22:38 (eight years ago)

Yeah. More of an annoyance last night being woken up by the strong winds but they were probably only gusting at maybe 55mph so can't imagine what it must be like facing winds of 100+mph

groovypanda, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 07:42 (eight years ago)

people now starting a campaign on FB to flood social media of Duke Energy and FPL due to the time being taken to restore power. I hate our civilians so much.

Record outages, and they warned in advance of the length of time, and nobody listened. A friend of mine told me she witnessed someone on her street harassing three different linemen demanding to know when her power would be back.

I'm sympathetic on the one hand cos those with families and pets, it's really difficult to deal with the schools being closed all week and having no power, and venting is the best way to deal w/ that.

but on the other hand 6 million people lost power at the same time, and one of the providers (Duke) had multiple states hit. poor employees working double and triple shifts probably.

I'm in NC now though and loving it.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)

My dad still doesn't have power. I didn't really need to know that he is "sweating (his) balls off" though.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 19:24 (eight years ago)

Are the depts that are supposed to be helping restore things to a pre-storm level of functionality properly staffed? I thought those were the ones people had been saying for months hadn't been restaffed since transition.

Anyway hope everybody down that way is finding things slowly improving and there's nothing else going to hit over the rest of the season.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 19:45 (eight years ago)

In situations like these, they bring in out of state help. For instance, a number of crews from Center point Energy here in Houston, having returned considerable service normally in the wake of Harvey (with assistance from imported crews from as far away as Illinois and Missouri), are in Florida working.

I'll be thrilled to have power back by this weekend, not sure how likely that is. Kind of feel stuck in a rut until it returns.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:39 (eight years ago)

Anyway, can't complain about our power company. We started with 44% of their customer base having power on Monday morning, up to 75.8% right now.

I can't even read about those nursing-home deaths in Hollywood.

Official Irma track shows that Orlando never got sustained hirricane winds. Was still more destructive here than Charley cos it was here longer but Charley brought much higher winds.

Imagining how much worse itd have been if the erroneous 11 pm report had come true.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 04:31 (eight years ago)

I'm really worried this latest hurricane assault will get lost among all the other hurricane and earthquake damage. Puerto Rico did better than expected the first time around, but got hit hard by Maria (yet no deaths, right?). Still, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Caribbean ... it's hard to know where to donate money and how much.

As an aside, I was last in Puerto Rico maybe 5 or so years ago. I was shocked at how shoddy and distressed everything was, like it was beat up but never recovered. Museums unable to keep their doors open, parks closed, that sort of thing. I read somewhere that if Puerto Rico were a state, it'd be the poorest state in the USA.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:31 (eight years ago)

PR was in really bad shape when I was there this past May. Lots of unrest and street demonstrations due to how hard it is to earn a living wage there.

Still a beautiful island, but this is really something they didn't need right now (or ever). The power grid is going to take a while to rebuild.

They really need the US govt's help, and well given what Trump said previously....yeah.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:59 (eight years ago)

I'm terrified for Puerto Rico.

they're saying could be months but they haven't been able to take a close look at the damage to the grid yet

(CNN)All people living near the Guajataca River in northwest Puerto Rico should evacuate immediately because of an "imminent dam break," the National Weather Service in San Juan said Friday afternoon.

"All Areas surrounding the Guajataca River should evacuate NOW. Their lives are in DANGER! Please SHARE!" an earlier tweet said.

About 70,000 people in the area of the Guajataca Dam have been told to evacuate, National Guard spokeswoman Yennifer Alvarez told CNN's Leyla Santiago.

An acquaintance who is a community-theater producer in her 60s was in Puerto Rico...Posted last week along the lines of "we're going to ride out this hurricane"...and then the next day "the sun is out, I'm going to walk on the beach" and kind of blowing it off. Has been stuck at the airport now for days, with Saturday the earlier time out.

Hi again...___ here. We are still ok but getting more and more scared . Feeling more and more like a white collar prison. Down to one meal a day... and no beverages of any kind at local stores. Long gas lines and longer lines to get into grocery stores. There is an airfield available at local air force base. Only using it for military personnel. Asked how to get on those flights... crickets. Unfortunately Geraldo Rivera was able to fly in and report from our white collar prison. Do not believe what fox news is saying. Please. He is misrepresenting. I will try to continue to post. Don't know why we get online when we do. Usually no connection.

It looks like it's still a trop depression, which doesn't give it much room to develop, much less intensify, when it hits land.

In Maria news, all but i think 16 employees are accounted for, and our building reopened and acquired supplies. 50% returned to work and presumably could acquire said supplies.

Wait where ars you seeing the hurricane force. NHCs intermediate 2 pm track still says 40 mph

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Thursday, 5 October 2017 17:50 (eight years ago)

Models also remained split on Nate’s potential strengthening, they said.

The storm gained some strength through the morning, But as it crosses the Yucatan peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico, models disagree. Some show winds increasing by nearly 75 mph over the next 72 hours, while others indicate only a slight increase to a weak hurricane. Forecasters bumped up their forecast, while warning that the tricky forecast involving two land crossings could complicate projections.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)

My lord, as I was sewing in my closet,
Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced;
No hat upon his head, his stockings fouled,
Ungartered, and down-gyvèd to his ankle,
Pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other,
And with a look so piteous in purport
As if he had been loosèd out of hell
To speak of horrors — he comes before me.

He took me by the wrist and held me hard.
Then goes he to the length of all his arm,
And, with his other hand thus o'er his brow,
He falls to such perusal of my face
As he would draw it. Long stayed he so.
At last, a little shaking of mine arm,
And thrice his head thus waving up and down,
He raised a sigh so piteous and profound
As it did seem to shatter all his bulk
And end his being. That done, he lets me go,
And, with his head over his shoulder turned,
He seem'd to find his way without his eyes,
For out o' doors he went without their helps
And to the last bended their light on me.
