i am in awe of how much craziness you guys take as a given, just from living through all these hurricanes & storms over the years.

the one big cyclone in Australia happened 2 years before I was born a bajillion miles from where i live & the fkn ~tv movie~ gave me nightmares. i still have panic attacks during lameass wind storms here in Sacramento. i dunno how yall do it <3

Watching footage from Mexico this week, I still cannot imagine what an earthquake feels like.

I've never experienced a hurricane first-hand, but we had Gustav squat on top of us for about a week, so I can picture that ten times more intense.

yeah earthquakes too - experienced a small one in Vegas 20 years ago & just about shit my pants in fear while Mr Veg, who rode out Loma Preator in SF, was practically filing his nails with boredom

There should be a picture book for adults about the different kinds of recurring disasters that threaten the people and things in all the regions of the world. I am going to see about this.

feel free to dig this post up when the 7.8 hits Los Angeles but the strongest quake I've felt in L.A. took place almost exactly 16 years ago to the day and it wasn't a big deal. we just felt a couple jolts. However despite not being a big deal, whenever you feel those jolts you wonder for a few seconds if they'll continue and get stronger. my wife lived thru the northridge quake (on the 9th floor of student housing no less) and is sensitive to quakes. So much so that my 3am shifting around in bed has caused her brief panic a couple of times (maybe bc the northridge quake hit in the early morning hours.)

i've felt two very mild earthquakes -- one in alaska and one in nyc(!?) -- and it is deeply weird. i don't blame mrs nomar one bit for being edgy

lol, was it the east coast one in August 2011? i was in new york & on the phone with my dad, who was in maryland. we were in the middle of a long conversation & i heard something fall in the background on his end & he said 'whoa, what the fuck... i think i just felt an earthquake.' it took about a minute for the earthquake to reach me - my bed started swaying and forth and people were screaming outside. good timing

If you get 2 1 in 1000 year hurricanes within a week and a half of each other is that it for the next year or is this now the new norm.

*dad plugged up the toilet (after taking a dump, cos of course it couldn't just be pee)
*I ask "ok, where's the plunger", and he loudly starts saying that can't be it cos he put his hand in the U-bend (through the poopy water).
*I realize he's saying this cos mo'fo doesn't have a plunger. they have literally been calling maintenance dude every time it 'gets clogged'.
*it's only a partial blockage so we just let the water go down and are using alternate ways to drain it, after I asked them "how the fuck can you not own a plunger" for 30 minutes...
*Winds have picked up considerably, we only have palm trees here but they're whipping about, lots of rain.
*power goes out right as new info coming on TV, apparently one network saying track changed and eye would wobble east and hit Orlando head on. Others are saying no, it's just moving north, it'll still come west of us. either way, heavier winds, more hurricane wind.
*mass confusion, though of course I'm puzzled at the freakout mostly cos it puts us back to getting what we thought we'd be getting on Thursday (Cat 1 winds).

Also hoping that this having been the peak of hurricane season means things are going to be dying down not brewing new storms.

really wondering if what was designated 1 in 1000 years happens twice in 2 weeks what that says about frequency from now on. Hope it's not now annual or more frequent.
