me too. prediction for winds reduced to trop storm where I'm at. tho then because of shifted track my aunt (who I haven't seen in 14 years) had to evacuate from ft Myers. these tradeoffs, oi.
Poor Tampa, too...

Confirmed reports of tornadoes on the ground have come from central Broward County, as tornado warnings were extended across South Florida.
Residents were urged to take cover immediately. At 7:40 p.m. a confirmed tornado was at Interstate 75 and U.S. 27 near Alligator Alley, moving west at 35 mph, the National Weather Service said. The tornado was located earlier over central Broward.
“At 7:18 PM EDT, a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado was located over Plantation, moving west at 35 mph,” the National Weather Service said. “This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!”
The weather service said the tornado threatened North Pompano Beach, Markham Park, West Ken-Lark, Ramblewood East, downtown Davie and Broward Estates.
“Heavy rainfall may hide this tornado,” the weather service said. “Do not wait to see or hear the tornado. TAKE COVER NOW!”

tornadoes are the one wild card w/ hurricanes that you really can do fuck-all to prepare for. a lot of Orlando's damage from Charley came not from the winds itself but from tornadoes spawned :(.
down to 120 mph now, headed towards Florida now, probably about to re-strengthen. just how much remains to be seen.

Tropical storm force winds in full effect here, including tornado warnings in Broward.

it's moving so slowly, it seems. 9 MPH would give the eye another 10 hours or so to cross to the keys. whether that's good or bad, as far as people making a last second decision to evacuate vs the lengthier time allowing it to gain strength, idk.
― nomar, Sunday, 10 September 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)
xpost i think we're gonna be fine here...assuming no surprises tomorrow.
a little more concerned about my friends in Tampa but the friends are super knowledgeable about hurricane safety and I trust their judgment.

tampa ilxor here. worried about my house and my cats, secured everything i could, not in a flood zone, thankfully. weathering the storm tomorrow night at a friend's house with boarded up windows. DJing tonight at a bar, no reason not to as it's perfectly fine outside tonight, but the feeling is eerie and anxious. it's good to have something to do with my mind and body.

new track came out - they are now projecting it to make landfall as a 3 (120 mph) instead of a 4.

good news is that it looks like jose is going to end up just dying slowly while chilling out in the atlantic!
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:25 (eight years ago)
hope so. everybody's nervous given the infamous Jeanne loop-de-loop in 2004 when we'd thought it was dead but that one was also a little further north.
found my LiveJournal from 2004 (lol) and looked to see what I wrote about Hurricanes, and it was very little except to complain about the media sensationalism about them. at least I'm consistent.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:31 (eight years ago)
i am in awe of how much craziness you guys take as a given, just from living through all these hurricanes & storms over the years. Doff my cap to all you mfers
the one big cyclone in Australia happened 2 years before I was born a bajillion miles from where i live & the fkn ~tv movie~ gave me nightmares. i still have panic attacks during lameass wind storms here in Sacramento. i dunno how yall do it <3
― Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:45 (eight years ago)
Watching footage from Mexico this week, I still cannot imagine what an earthquake feels like.
I've never experienced a hurricane first-hand, but we had Gustav squat on top of us for about a week, so I can picture that ten times more intense.
― pplains, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:50 (eight years ago)
yeah earthquakes too - experienced a small one in Vegas 20 years ago & just about shit my pants in fear while Mr Veg, who rode out Loma Preator in SF, was practically filing his nails with boredom

There should be a picture book for adults about the different kinds of recurring disasters that threaten the people and things in all the regions of the world. I am going to see about this.

feel free to dig this post up when the 7.8 hits Los Angeles but the strongest quake I've felt in L.A. took place almost exactly 16 years ago to the day and it wasn't a big deal. we just felt a couple jolts. However despite not being a big deal, whenever you feel those jolts you wonder for a few seconds if they'll continue and get stronger. my wife lived thru the northridge quake (on the 9th floor of student housing no less) and is sensitive to quakes. So much so that my 3am shifting around in bed has caused her brief panic a couple of times (maybe bc the northridge quake hit in the early morning hours.)

lol, was it the east coast one in August 2011? i was in new york & on the phone with my dad, who was in maryland. we were in the middle of a long conversation & i heard something fall in the background on his end & he said 'whoa, what the fuck... i think i just felt an earthquake.' it took about a minute for the earthquake to reach me - my bed started swaying and forth and people were screaming outside. good timing

If you get 2 1 in 1000 year hurricanes within a week and a half of each other is that it for the next year or is this now the new norm.
anyway, hope people are safe and this is a short term thing that can allow life to continue without much further resulting chaos.
