so the superstar machine thing came to mind last week, and i genuinely hope it was just me hearing about a weird cult thing and then reading something that reminded me of it and not a real reference
finally went back and finished melissa broder's "so sad today" book that she did after having some success with the twitter account and there's a brief aside where, becoming sober, she says she ended up finding a group that helped and to contact her via email if you have any questions about it
i mean, i'm 99% sure it's AA or a similar meeting group, but there was this jarring "oh no what if she's actually involved with this superstar thing" moment! hearing about groups like this always plants that seed of doubt, wondering who all these people meeting are and if i'd know of them

the John Cook send-off is a good read. I've really enjoyed all of their roast posts for departing staff. Denton might be a bit of an asshat, but he did allow a lot of very good and smart people to inhabit what seems to have been an incredibly collegial environment under frequently terrible circumstances (often self-inflicted, as many of these godspeed pieces have suggested, and as this thread itself generally argues)

That’s cool. Never met the guy. I’ve learned there’s often a chasm between good boss and good employee. And when the latter concept starts squeezing on the former, the turnover rate almost reaches the spectrum of human hearing.

it's two days into a 30 day pledge drive and I've only seen a little bit of coverage, let alone the further information explaining who is behind it and what the plan of action would be should they raise the funds
― mh, Monday, 11 December 2017 23:35 (eight years ago)
my guess is that they'll soon be announcing private investors to pair w/ the publicly raised money bcuz 500k doesn't get you very far in trying to buy a website, especially this one
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 December 2017 01:22 (eight years ago)
i meant to say "even this one" ha -- $1 million might get it done (for the record i'm guessing completely & have no insider info on how much the site would realistically go for)

a chain of links off that led to the "On Smarm" article and hoo boy this argument did not age well:
One of the silliest or most misguided notions that David Denby frets about, in denouncing snark, is that "the lowest, most insinuating and insulting side threatens to win national political campaigns." This is more or less the opposite of the case.
― algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)
I guess it's the opposite of the case in that they don't threaten to win national campaigns, they actually do win

That was a great and dispiriting article, though it took me a while to realise that the paragraph where Gawker blows smoke up its own ass regarding, uh, not being Buzzfeed, was serving as "please please someone buy us"
An answer has never quite been given, but according to Univision, while GMG—whose predecessor, Gawker Media, was characterized upon its acquisition in August 2016 as a “consistent, compelling and profitable digital media business” in a company-wide email signed by Isaac Lee—may be thriving, it did not turn a profit last year.
