Paul Fussell:
"Wearing one shirt over another — Oxford-cloth button-down over a turtleneck, for example — is upper-middle-class, and the shirt worn underneath can ever be a dress shirt (solid color is best) with its own collar, a usage I’ve seen in warm weather on Madison Avenue in the upper eighties."

descriptions of the political scene by steven "comrade" bannon
Charlie Rose asked Bannon, appearing on “60 Minutes” in his first televised interview since departing the Trump administration on Aug. 18, if rumors were true that he had described Comey’s firing as the “biggest mistake in political history.”
“That probably would be too bombastic, even for me,” Bannon said, “but maybe modern political history. I don’t think there’s any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired, we would not have a special counsel,” Bannon said. “We would not have the Mueller investigation and the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going for.”
translation from derp-speak: "comey was so corrupt he threw the election to 2 scoops, but 2 scoops is so impulsive and thin-skinned he couldn't wait for 'russia russia russia' to blow over"?
― reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 11 September 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link
How in the world could Rose have this guy on and not even mention the Mercers, the wingnut billionaire power couple without whose bankroll Bannon would be just another Alex Jones hawking brain pills and chemtrail remover? How could he let Bannon, who made his pile at Goldman Sachs and then made another pile in Hollywood, use the phrase “limousine liberals” without picking up a banana from the fruit bowl and throwing it at him?

As Duke shows, CBS’ craven attempt to create the misleading impression that Steve Bannon looks like all of America’s racist uncles have been teleported into one writhing, Cronenbergian flesh-sack where they duke it out over who gets to hold the Hustler is nothing but a petty attack on superficial appearances, one CBS was clearly hoping would detract from Bannon’s words about deporting Mexicans that dripped like honey from Bannon’s naturally smooth lavender lips. And it’s not just CBS! As Ann Coulter pointed out on Twitter, “Networks do this a lot. That’s why conservatives seem to look so much better on Fox News,” the only place where Ann Coulter is allowed to appear as though she has skin.

I'd argue that Bannon's appearance (like Trump's) isn't wholly irrelevant inasmuch as his general state of physical disrepair is probably at least somewhat reflective of the tattered state of his mind. I mean, it takes some savage self-abuse to end up looking like a fistful of used toilet paper dipped in pancake batter.

Trump said Bannon has "lost his mind".
"Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books," Trump said. "Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was," the president added.
rump blasted Bannon’s political instincts, saying he had “everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans.” “Steve doesn’t represent my base — he’s only in it for himself,” Trump said in his statement.

Bannon laundered a confessional through a New York-media reporter for the same reason he laundered Clinton Cash reporting through the New York Times, while using his own website, Breitbart, for the distinct purpose of whipping up racial panic among people interested in completely different narrative truths.

"I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism; and remain ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again."
"My comments about the meeting with Russian nationals came from my life experiences as a Naval officer stationed aboard a destroyer whose main mission was to hunt Soviet submarines to my time at the Pentagon during the Reagan years when our focus was the defeat of 'the evil empire' and to making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."
"My comments were aimed at Paul Manafort, a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr."
