xxpost not normal no but it kinda happened last year w/ Matthew and the one after it. this is the first time three active hurricanes were out at the same time since 2010.
fortunately its projected path doesn't have it making landfall *yet*, but hard to get too excited given how flawed 4-5 day forecasts are.
plus the Carolinas could eventually be targeted.

Best thoughts to you, Marcos. Hope your family is ok <3
Got in touch with my friends on St Martin today, albeit very, very briefly. The connection broke off a minute in the conversation, but I know now they themselves are ok. No idea about the state of things/house/belongings though.
It's so odd in this day and age an island can be completely cut off from the world. Under normal circumstances it feels like a breath of fresh air: there are still places on this planet unreachable! Now, though.. ugh.

as an onlooker I have to say there's something unsettling about the data/weather nerds who dive in so hard on this stuff.
YOU GUYS IT'S GONNA BE REAAAAALLL BAD LOOK AT THIS NEW GRAPH I MADE just feels kinda weirdly insensitive to the actual people who might be at risk and are already pretty scared?
not that providing info is bad but the way some lean into it is...weird.
I mean it's not like it's a new phenomenon or anything but it def weirds me out

Last time I rode out a storm I thought I had enough alcohol but forgot about all the daydrinking needed to kill time when the power's out and the house is dark and candlelit because all the windows are boarded up I ended up having to dip into an old, warm forgotten 12-pack of Budweiser. If I can offer any advice it's to have more quality cold booze on hand than you ever think you could handle.
Also, if you have a bunch of good meat or fish in the freezer and you're looking at long term power outages you can make some good friends (and valuable allies) by sharing that stuff instead of letting it go bad. Our next-door neighbor was out of town when Katrina hit and after the storm we checked on his place for him and he told us he had a freezer full of halibut he'd caught in Alaska a month earlier. Before we left town to find shelter in a city that had power and water we handed a ton of the halibut over to a neighbor a block away who had a generator, tons of gas and guns and was planning on sticking around and keeping an eye on his street and he said he'd keep an eye on our places as well.
And yeah, in general if you've gotta leave town take out your trash first and empty your fridge, unplug it and leave it open so you don't come home (assuming you still have one) to a house that smells horribly rotten for the next few months. I can still smell that stink if I close my eyes and think about it.

thirded. the insensitivity of the left-brained "lol u fucked" drive-bys has always caused a spike in my blood pressure.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 8 September 2017 06:31 (eight years ago)
the word "worst case scenario" is always kind of weird to me with hurricanes, like - p sure there's not a finite ceiling on how bad it can get
― Neanderthal, Friday, 8 September 2017 06:32 (eight years ago)
I have grown tired of the non-Florida internet brigade chiding people (in non-voluntary or mandatory evac areas) for not evacuating.
I've digested more data on this storm than I could in a lifetime, and yeah, my decision to ride it out here (which I made for reasons having to do with my folks) doesn't put my chances of death at 0%, but neither does me choosing to drive away from it.
Took some solace in re-reading last year's Matthew events and realizing the Euro model as well as the UK model caused the 10/4 panic that caused everybody to say Orlando was fucked before the forecast moved back east over the next two days and the storm wobbled. just preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.
My company might have pissed me off royally for other reasons this year, but they have been gold-star in how they've handled this. They're giving their employees free water bottles tomorrow (one case per employee - they have 1,000). My boss told me I can take off whenever.
Alfred, stay safe man - I know this new track is probably scary as hell for you down there.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 8 September 2017 06:35 (eight years ago)
all Floridians stay safe.
everybody stay safe.
somebody give me a horse tranquilizer
Good luck y'all. The idea of hurricanes scares the shit out of me as someone who's always lived inland, can't imagine the dread of waiting to see what happens.
― louie mensch (milo z), Friday, 8 September 2017 06:44 (eight years ago)
yeah, I was tempted to jet today after the 5 pm forecast (the stories about the roads being jammed are a bit overblown - my friend left this morning and already made it to NC before stopping for the night) - but I figured the anxiety of worrying about my family members I left behind would ruin the relief of being away from it.
Tennessee showed up in the cone briefly! TENNESSEE (granted for a weakened storm but that's where like everybody goes cos "it won't go there".
― Neanderthal, Friday, 8 September 2017 06:45 (eight years ago)
good luck man.

One bad piece of advice I have seen bouncing around facebook is to keep your important documents in the dishwasher to somehow waterproof them. There have been others pointing out that this is not a sound idea, but not nearly as much as I have seen the original idea shared.
A friend who lived through Katrina made a list of things he wished he had been better prepared with:
batteriesmosquito spraymosquito nettingboard gamesflashlightsbattery powered fana generator and gas
Also seconding the warning that if you're stuck out power for more than a day, take the time to clean out your fridge before it turns into a nightmare.
Best wishes for all you guys.

The best advice I have heard given, besides leaving, is to thoroughly take pictures of everything, for insurance purposes. This thing is huge. My best friend's family, including a paraplegic Uncle, were just evacuated from their home in Georgia. And I was reading about the problem with all the construction cranes, which are so big they can't be disassembled in time. People living in buildings under construction have been told to just leave, because the winds could simply blow those giant cranes over. Imagine the damage of one of those things falling down?

My debate now is whether to ride the storm by myself or stay with my parents, who don't live far away. I already have cabin fever, and I'm not sure how much longer I can take being in my apartment alone when we still got about forty hours before the storm begins.

My folks are 87 in (very) low country sc, my mom had room reserved inland starting fri and f'ing cancelled it because "I've been watching reports closely and we don't need to be there until Sunday and I don't want to pay extra." I am pretty mad.
