robert jordan RIP but sanderson finished up 'the wheel of time' like a pro ace coming in in the 7th inning and saving a game. the 300-page final battle in the last book is completely fucking awesome, the battle of the pelennor fields on mushrooms. fingers crossed benioff / weiss kick it into sanderson's gear next season as the finale approaches

yeah sanderson did alright. for some masochistic reason i missed jordan's voice a bit but it was a satisfying ending. however,i'll echo what i said above about fantasy as a genre having a tough time with endings.

david gemmell is an exception but yeah there's a lot of stephen king syndrome in fantasists trying to stick landings

but a lot of the spectacle this season is payoff to the storytelling done years ago by the show - or by GRRM decades ago, at this point.

Sanderson mostly sucked, and in a very similar way to Benioff & Weiss. Yeah, he got the job done and he excised a lot of the tedious stuff (and weird obsessions) that Jordan had become mired in but the last couple of books (and especially the final battle) were just rote tying up of loose ends

I mean fair play to the guy, it was an impossible job, but I honestly wish they'd just left it unfinished

nice work. never remember the lost music being so retro and campy - that brass part wouldn't be out of place on the original star trek.

I'm halfway through S5 (and watching weekly now), rewatching clips from the first season (after the Cersei/Robert exchange above) the dropoff in quality is shocking. Entire episodes in the middle season are passing without a single memorable thing happening. All of Dany's plotline in Esseros is a big 'who cares.'

Yeah I found myself glazing over in those bits in the books. Cept for that weird bit with the priests where she's in some kind of labyrinth with endless doors... did they even do that bit in the show? I dont recall it.

Yes, that was in season 2 where Drogo made a surprise cameo.

Kind of missing Theon and Yara now. Alfie Allen deserves a bit more credit.

Yara kinda disappeared completely, no? Are we supposed to assume she dead?

I think we're supposed to be shocked and pumped up when she appears again in the next episode or sometime next season. But I'd guess there's almost no chance that she's just dead. If they did, that was an awful ending for her character!

end of this season will be a big ol' battle w/Euron vs the unsullied and--from the sea--a small but surprisingly effective fleet guided by Theon. maybe a dragon will show up?

i think i can guess but just to confirm - benjen's not going to come back as a whitewalker, right? because he's already dead? or something? because if he winds up as a zombie mini-boss in the final season that's gonna add a whole layer of wtf-ness to his sudden appearance and pointless death

I said it way back but I'm disappointed they gave the white walkers clothes and made them show emotions etc. Now they're just the "bad guys". I wouldn't be surprised if the first sound the night king made was an evil laugh during the wall collapse.

I wish they stayed this alien, humanoid personification of a deadly storm that was set on mindlessly wiping out humanity via an undead horde.

Hopefully get to see the Night King just fly over the wall and south for a bit doing some damage but the Wall magic probably extends upwards into space. Watching them test this out for a while from greater and greater height might be funny.

OTM re Walker Fashion. imma guess it's mostly a concession to budget but yeah, night king has gotten hella corny.

If you're going to dress them up, at least make them look like they're wearing human armor that was forged thousands of years ago. That would make more sense.
