Bartender gave me a bit of very good news today - that another frequent customer that had given me a bunch of agitata - had moved out of state

Customary to tip your bartender $2 when he has someone whacked for you

Far from me to judge (or give a fuck) but this chick seems to be making it hard on this intrepid dude by bringing up an ex and a random male friend

Well now they’re kissing and I should really leave !

This thread would be perfect for Ask A Drunk. Except for the "etiquette" part.

Barmaid is an overflowing reservoir of gossip about other barmaids; I could give a f but it gets me $3 off the good stuff so

When you’re the only one at the bar, it’s ljke your own private bar!

calstars, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 01:39 (five years ago) link

Ditto the movie theater! That’s livin

Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 01:40 (five years ago) link

only one at a bar if you have something to read: classic

only one at a movie theater: better than not seeing the movie, but dud compared to the experience in a good audience

with one other good friend at a movie theater: that's livin

with one other good friend at a movie theater EXCEPT one other person comes in alone before the movie starts and you call to them "hey! it's just us, we're everyone! come sit with us!" and they don't, and they go and sit half the theater away behind you, and every time you laugh at something in the movie you think about how they must be feeling such regret now but are too embarrassed to come & join you halfway through: classic

something to read: yeah, people

calstars, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:11 (five years ago) link

hmm private bar is ok if you’re at the bar and have something to do and there’s a mutual level of comfort with you and the bartender

if you have nothing to do, should have brought a book

if it’s a place where they serve you at a table and you have an entire reading nook across the bar, absolutely excellent

mh, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:56 (five years ago) link

I don't go to a bar alone unless I have something to read. But it has to be something that doesn't invite conversation. I choose carefully. Ancient history or a 19th century novel work fine. If I don't have something with me I will stop and get a newspaper. Also a pen, if I don't already have one. I will generally do a crossword if I am done with the paper and don't have a book.

Pro tip: hotel bars lack character, but they're often quiet (lacking "regulars" and a "scene" and a "beverage program." There's often a lobby shop that might have a newspaper. So you can kill two birds there.

Most bars these days have TVs. This can be an annoyance. Ok if they're showing sportsy stuff. Ok if they're showing news with captions on. But why o why do some have a TV showing the news with the sound off, and no captions? I don't want to see Tucker Carlson's fucking face for an hour unless someone is punching it. Or at least throwing fruit (I'm a peaceful man).

Bartenders remain fascinated that I'd bring a book to a bar and read it instead of thumbing my phone.

I was at a bar last night and we were talking about how a different bar was very good for being alone and striking up conversations with people and the one we were at was bad for it. Everyone who was sitting alone at the bar was on their phone and it was a depressing sight.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 04:00 (five years ago) link

I think we were also saying that one was more likely to talk to someone reading a book as opposed to someone looking at their phone. i don't know how true this is, we were all kind of drunk.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 04:04 (five years ago) link

that is maybe more true, and also more annoying sometimes

I’m hijacking this thread to say that I’m in a bar that has a machine that can print text and images into the head on a glass of beer. (Needless to say its in Japan)

When you say head, do you mean foam? Or?

calstars, Friday, 23 August 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

Yeah, it's head in British .

I got really into watching YouTubes of Japanese barmen carving ice cubes for cocktails a few years back. I miss good cocktails.

What do we think of bar trivia? Ehhhhh

calstars, Thursday, 23 January 2020 00:52 (four years ago) link

I love bar trivia. I like doing it in random places while traveling. I used to do a music trivia night at the record store/bar I worked at. It was a bitch writing the rounds of questions every week though.
