two weeks pass...

from nextdoor:

Due to an ordering mistake, I have way too many pencils.
One box of 12 pencils for $2 / One pack of 8 boxes (96 pencils) for $10.

"hey, does anyone know why where were a half dozen cop cars behind a vehicle they had pulled over on the freeway entrance next to our neighborhood?"

several posts of rampant speculation about drugs and weapons follow, no firsthand knowledge

I'm very tempted to just post "Heard they pulled someone over for exotic animal smuggling. Three bonobos and a python"

My small town Facebook group put up a sensational story titled "CHOAS AS LORRY BLOCKS [piddling little street] FOR THIRTY MINUTES!!!" and have now apparently blocked me for making fun of them. It's probably for the best I suppose.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 September 2017 10:28 (eight years ago)

In UK, lorry blocks neighborhood while in USSR, neighborhood blocks YOU – wait, that didn't make any sense.

Here's what's blocking our neighborhood tonight.

Someone posted their kids' three old Halloween costumes for sale on our neighborhood parent forum. One was an obviously offensive Native American costume. Some people called her out for it, and when she refused to get rid of the costume, a heroic friend of mine who I will just call Lea offered to pay her $10 for it so she could dispose of it herself. The woman actually took her up on it, and said she would leave it with her doorman.

Here is a picture of the $10 bill Lea left her, which the woman angrily posted to the group the next day:

the saddest NextDoor threads are missing pet threads but i do enjoy the terrible detective work of my neighbors, it's along the lines of

"Hi everyone, my cat got out last night and usually she returns but she didn't. Here's a photo, if you see her please contact me,"

"Hey is this your cat, I just saw her in my yard. Fingers crossed..."

I have been avoiding nextdoor because I saw a dead cat in the road last week and was too stressed at the end of the day to go deal with it. It's a very busy area as far as neighbors and pedestrian traffic goes, so I temporarily relieved myself of responsibility, vowing to gather it up in the morning and seek the owners if it was still there. Luckily, it was gone.

I'm sure there's a very depressing thread about it

Exchange from recent thread about the fact that they're going to house a few dozen homeless people in a failed hotel in my neighborhood:

Jonathan K___ I think people are talking past each other here. We should not conflate "homeless people" and "bums". As I indicated with my earlier posted NYer article, many homeless people have jobs. Some are even university professors. No one wants bums. Dirty, disheveled, etc. often mentally ill. No one wants them near where they live. I sure as shit don't. But if someone is merely homeless and goes to school or work or what have you and they need a place to live, then I see no problem. I'm anti-bum. Not anti-homeless.

Lisa A_____ Okay, now that I can agree with.

Lisa A_____ but a lot of the righteous on here seem not to mind the legit bums. Like I said, standards.

My car was broken into on monday night. The window was smashed along with a neighbors truck. I saw a police officer parked down the street and told him what happened. I asked him if I should file a police report and he said I could if I wanted to but nothing would come of it.

i live in a densely populated residential neighborhood, tons of families, little kids everywhere. someone posts in our FB community group that they saw some dude walking around a residential street with a shotgun and so they called the cops to be safe. cue ~200 posts about how it's perfectly legal and you shouldn't have infringed this guy's rights and induced panic in the community and should've been better informed about our second amendment rights. jfc

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 6 October 2017 15:31 (eight years ago)

The excerpt I posted upthread was just a very small sampling of the 250+ posts about a mere 30-40 beds in an underutilized hotel being temporarily devoted to homeless people. So many people fall back on "the children" -- "There's a school down the road!" No shut the fuck up, you just don't want to see homeless people walking around. They're not a danger to "the children."

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 6 October 2017 15:33 (eight years ago)

tbf maybe half of the posts supported the guy who called the cops, many folks saying "who cares if it's legal, don't be an asshole"

marcos, Friday, 6 October 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

yeah, similarly there were an encouraging number of posts supportive of the homeless

I saw a guy open carrying at a grocery store. He looked to be about 20, had long greasy hair and an anime T-shirt. I was with my 2-year old. I wasn't exactly scared, just bummed out. Why this dude imagined a scenario in which he would have to shoot someone in a grocery store was beyond me. Coincidentally I wound up accidentally stealing an avocado (blame the kid) and I imagined the dude filling me full of lead in the parking lot. And yes I did go back and pay for it.

frogbs, Friday, 6 October 2017 16:10 (eight years ago)

in my neighborhood the lost animals are found most of the time so it's pretty heartwarming

xp - maybe he was afraid someone would steal his gun if he left it in his vehicle ?

Loud profane music on C____ St

There’s a teen party going on C____ St. with several kids walking around the house. I called the Sheriffs office and complained after listening to “F__ dis N__ r” rap music coming through my closed windows. After 3 hrs I called back they told me the officer couldn’t find the house. I drove over myself and found several cars parked on the north side of the street about 400 ft from L____ Rd. I asked dispatch for the name of the responding officer and he put me on hold and then disconnected the call. Why the hell do I have to be subjected to this type of total disregard for others every weekend? If it isn’t loud music, it’s fireworks, or loud motorcycles or loud diesel trucks, or the damn ice cream truck! Thanks police departments great job

Smokey outside today.
Can really smell the smoke. Hills covered. Anyone knows what's going on!

Bear in mind that this is Oakland, where 40 miles to the north everything is on fire, and has been since Sunday night.
