Varys has got a great tan hanging out with Dany and all on their voyage over.

With sparing Umber Girl and Karstark Boy, Jon is making sort of the same mistake as he did before when he was Lord Commander -- i.e. allying with a despised people over the objections of the rest of the existing power structure -- though obviously he's not going to get Julius Caesared for it this time.

i don't think there's enough time for much in the way of machinations and loyalty-switching at this stage of the game, it seems to be like the rest of it will be a pretty straightforward run: finishing off the conflicts south of the wall, uneasy alliances in order to defeat the Night King's army of the undead after that. my only theory is that at some point next season Cersei will become the Night Queen, just a full evil power-up. But that might be too ridiculous...maybe.

They've done a pretty bad job of establishing the Iron Islanders other than Theon so who even knows what they know.

the description for the next episode says "Jon faces a revolt" so idk?

sarahell, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 19:25 (eight years ago)

Finding it odd that they would put any recognisable actors in what was ostensibly an Ed Sheehan cameo. Is even a very small bit part in GOT a step towards Hollywood from Shane Meadows TV or something?

Quite enjoyed that episode so looking forward to seeing the rest of the season.

the story kinda requires shady ass littlefinger to take the vale's army to help out circei, otherwise dany's just gonna steamroll everyone

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 20:00 (eight years ago)

I mean, Sansa's due an "I told you so" moment at some point.

But I can't see tactically how dany's forces won't steamroll everyone: she's got infantry, cavalry, navy, and a fucking air battle. I don't think any of these medieval people have any idea how to fight an air battle.

sarahell, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

yeah but the ice zombies will join with jon's army once Bran works out he can control them. and then we get dragons vs zombies ending in Jon and Dany reconciling and snogging and then dying tragically. and then everyone agrees Sam Tarly should be the one king to rule them all because Sam = GRRM

Turgoose hasn't made much of an impact outside of his work with Meadows, and he's also not a very good actor. I'm pretty sure he's just paying the bills

HBO ANNOUNCES CONFEDERATE, A NEW DRAMA SERIES CREATED BY DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS
Series Will Be Executive Produced And Written By David Benioff And D.B. Weiss; Nichelle Tramble Spellman, Malcolm Spellman, Carolyn Strauss And Bernadette Caulfield Will Also Executive Produce

“Game of Thrones” creators/showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will return to HBO with their new original series CONFEDERATE, it was announced today by Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming.

CONFEDERATE chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.

“As the brilliant ‘Game of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series,” said Bloys. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. CONFEDERATE promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.”

“We have discussed CONFEDERATE for years, originally as a concept for a feature film,” add Benioff and Weiss. “But our experience on ‘Thrones’ has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There won’t be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world, and we couldn’t imagine better partners in world-building than Nichelle and Malcolm, who have impressed us for a long time with their wit, their imagination and their Scrabble-playing skills.”

CONFEDERATE will be written and created by Benioff and Weiss, who will also serve as showrunners on the series. Partnering with them as executive producers and writers on the series will be Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“Justified,” “The Good Wife”) and Malcolm Spellman (“Empire,” the forthcoming “Foxy Brown”). Carolyn Strauss (“Game of Thrones”) and Bernadette Caulfield (“Game of Thrones,” “Big Love”) will also join as executive producers.
Production will begin following the final season of “Game of Thrones.”

I feel like CONFEDERATE needs to be on its own thread where we can talk shit and attract trolls without ruining this one. Thanks.

Yes to these, but since the whole ep1 was basically showing us where everyone is on the map--including showing us a bunch of actual maps--it served as an excuse for Arya to say "I'm headin' on down to King's Landing." Made for a better scene than telling the girl she spared at the poisoning something like "Tell them what you seen here, and now I'm off to King's Landing!"

andrew m., Thursday, 20 July 2017 15:53 (eight years ago)

notes on tonight's ep

1. The Ironborn have no maesters, right? So no ravens. I would presume that at least some sailors in Yara & Theon's mutineer fleet were secret loyalists to Euron and thus he would be privy to the necessary information about their location and direction in order to commit a surprise intercept in the night, but how does that information get to him? Do the Iron Islands practice a different form of avian communication, possibly with trained pelicans or terns? Seriously though, dipshits, your brother wants you dead, keep a fucking eye out.

2. I appreciated (i.e. oh, you mother fuckers) the Nymeria fake-out. I'm okay with either Arya's interpretation (that wasn't actually Nymeria) or the "Arya is so different now that Nymeria recognized her but couldn't vote for her" version. Based on the way the Hot Pie scene played out I suspect the latter was the point, and this is a set up for when (if) Arya gets to Winterfell and realizes how distant she is from her own people.

3. I predict some people might think it's dumb or confusing that Dany starts questioning Varys and Tyrion re: loyalty only after getting all the way to Dragonstone. To me it seems obvious she wouldn't need to worry about their possible mendacity in Essos, where they have no roots, but once in Westeros, and on the eve of meeting with other Westerosi, their true allegiances should be questioned, and extra special oaths requested, etc.

4. The cut away from Sam performing, uh, "surgery" to those randoms breaking into a delicious chicken pot pie was good and disgusting.

There are a lot of nerds, and I am one of them.

El Tomboto, Monday, 24 July 2017 02:44 (eight years ago)

I also half expected Snow to just kill littlefinger right there in the crypt. Oh well.

I am kind of wondering who Grey Worm is going to get to kill before he eats it. It better be someone that matters.

Euron is clearly going to end up being strangled by Theon after tonight.

El Tomboto, Monday, 24 July 2017 02:49 (eight years ago)

- a duck!

the only good way forward for the last season is if Dany goes mad like her father, that would rule
