i'm not being facetious but i think prostitution has become more formalized/professionalized if you will in modern times. i'm thinking of hogarth's london as the comparison.

with the advent of free love, as it were, the idea of having to *pay* for sex became more demeaning than the cache of having sex.

There are still circles where it's a point of bragadacchio - city boys, stereotypically the military. There was a time, even into the 20th century (maybe the turning point was post-WWII?), when it was acceptable or common for men of all walks of life to visit a prostitute to make themselves men.

But now, even if it's more common, it's generally not something men will be proud of or joke about, because needing to frequent a prostitute for actual sex (rub 'n' tugs perhaps a different issue) is seen as pathetic, there must be something deficient about you.

You can make a reasonable argument that prostitution is wrong, exploitative, and sexist, but it's far more tenuous to attempt to equate molestation with (soliciting) prostitution.

The thought of sex with a prostitute gives me the willies for personal reasons... I've had perfectly consensual sex with strangers before, and the sex was awful, even though nobody was getting paid and nobody was telling lies. It's a bad feeling. It makes me feel bad, personally.
