Elaine was a great example of the equality of assholism; I don't think that's necessarily aspirational (which is what this article appears to yearn for).

Yeah, the article was like "She made a guy get a vasectomy for her, awesome!" where really it was funny on the basis of being a jerky thing to do.

The most succinct way I can summarize what's weird about that article is that it's a bit like saying that since Cathy always loses to the swimsuit, the comic strip is secretly on the swimsuit's side

(although I do think that there's a level on which "the show" is comfortable enough in this sort of cosmopolitan/liberal worldview that it has fun tweaking it or feinting in the other direction, as I think most cosmopolitan/liberal people do)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Jack seems to flail just as much as Liz whenever he has to deal with her day-to-day problems, whereas IIRC Liz has shone and excelled every time she's moved up to deal with issues on Jack's level, kind of hinting at Jack's job and life being much easier than Liz's.

The part I'd agree with is that yeah, the bulk of the show is about some level of tension/discomfort surrounding a "creative" type having to take on adult/management roles, and having this combination of admiration/exasperation with the person who totally embodies those roles (Jack), and making these sometimes hilarious mixed-results attempts to be adult or commanding or sexy or whatever ("I am a Sugarbaker woman") -- if the article is looking for the show to make some kind of call about what role is better, surely the ultimate call is that we are meant to like and empathize with watching Lemon struggle to do those things like we all do, and the end conclusion is basically that she's fine and likable exactly as she is and we root for her success!

^^ this seems no different to me than any comedy show about a lovably funny guy trying and sometimes childishly failing to have some kind of command or authority or success in his marriage, job, parenting, dating life, etc. -- i.e., most half-hour comedy shows

xp the quickness of the cut was so brilliant - didn't even really give Kenneth a chance to finish the word "request!"

this was a bit meh again. I still enjoy it but there's been a drop off in funny this season. Next week's episode must be the last in the season I suppose.

There was an ad for Mama Mia immediately after the show. It was totally synergistic advermarketing. Still funny though.

i have noticed that the pre-credit portion of 30 rock is a terrific barometer of how funny the rest of the episode will be. lots of lols = great ep. some lols = good ep. no lols = bad ep.
