can something that's meant to be satire sound kind of messed up when the speaker seems to be bursting blood vessels from rage and 40s? Tell me about Swift the next time some right wing AM dudes talks about putting people in camps as a joke.

― President Keyes, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:31 (nine years ago)
but really, I listen to about every fifth episode of this show to catch an interesting guest or topic. is there a particular point where they've just gone full-on into condemning people to camps

no, for that you need to go to c*m town

it is a stretch for me to be listening to a podcastdouble stretch for one called "chapo trap house"
so not gonna listen to something called cum town

Xpost Worse even. Khmer Rouge never mastered podcasting. That's the trouble with killing the intellectual class.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:43 (nine years ago)
If you're having to fan yourself with dismay re: joking about exiling Jonathan Chait to the center of the sun just accept that Chapo isn't for you and move on.
― El Tuomasbot (milo z), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:59 (nine years ago)
listen up, i've been to the center of the sun, that shit's hot.

I decided to listen to see what the context of the objectionable joke was
now I'm really confused: so random people on twitter discover wikipedia, respond to Chait's anti-marxism article beat with a list of every fact they just learned about Lenin, and then the CTH guys joke in response to one of the outliers that hey, if we had a boat, it'd go to the sun and we'd throw Chait on it
then there's a several minute repudiation of Chait's neoliberalism apologia (or lack thereof) and war mongering
these guys have made bad jokes before, but how this particular instance is vile, when it starts with a joke kicked off from that basis and immediately followed with analysis of the dude's stances, is ?!?
I figured from context earlier in the thread that they just randomly brought up Lenin's philosopher boats and started listing dudes to go on it or something
― mh, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 16:30 (nine years ago)
I mean, throwing that out without the context it's spinning off of a EVILS OF MARXISM list on twitter and was a tossed-off line right before going into a repudiation of the dude in question's previously published views is some bait and switch
― mh, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 16:32 (nine years ago)
btw I 100% sending Malcolm Gladwell to the sun, but only if he's unable to transmit his book he writes about it on the journey back to earth
how about if we bring back the philosopher ships for http://www.nrcruise.com/
― lettered and hapful (symsymsym), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 16:33 (nine years ago)
I think enough of those people are blockading the right from consolidating their platform. We just need to send the public "liberals" out to the bermuda triangle for a couple years while we firm up ours
― mh, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 16:37 (nine years ago)
And we expect more top conservatives to join us!
wait, who is already listed on there that they consider a "top conservative?"

CTH is Rush Limbaugh for the left. That's why it works, that's why it's took off so quickly. It's a rebuke of the ridiculous "when they go low, we go high" strategy. As Matt said in that Harvard Crimson interview, politics should be libidinal, visceral. Joking about sending dull intellectuals in a rocket into the sun is par for the course.

in less, er, bodily terms - notions of compromise, nobility, and civility are obsolete when you're up against a ruthless, atavistic party that will give you no quarter even if you behave properly.

I wouldn't say Rush Limbaugh, more like The Daily Show for the left. Instead of wry smirks and rallies about why don't we all just agree to disagree, it's irony and anger.
― El Tuomasbot (milo z), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:05 (nine years ago)
maybe there is value is relentlessly mocking all the terrible centrist pundits I agree are terrible. I just am not sure it's really subversive or anything and the level of analysis i see from the main hosts doesn't seem to go that far beyond mocking centrists for self-servingly hiding behind identity politics. (it's different sometimes when there are guests and i know from reading amber's writing that she is more interesting than the other guys).
i might just be too burned out on US politics to appreciate this show. i wish i could stop consuming media related to US politics but i'm scared to discover the void that i've been filling with that consumption all these years.
― Treeship, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:05 (nine years ago)
i was definitely not making an argument that i am offended by "male tears" jokes wtf. i'm not even "offended" by the show, but i'm not going to cheer on eDgY celebrations of state censorship when i see them
― Treeship, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:07 (nine years ago)
the sort of tribalism on the left that's grown so much in the wake of the democratic primary is itself a tragedy. there is so much posturing and bullshit and the battle lines are completely stupid. "bernie bros," "hilbots," "brocialists," "identitarians," "the resitance," please shoot me into the sun
― Treeship, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:12 (nine years ago)
it's not a fun good time
I think Twitter makes all that seem like more of a real division than it actually is tbh, the vast majority of Hillz voters like Bernie (the reverse is also likely true), and most DSA types are not on social media at all
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:14 (nine years ago)
yeah i agree. that contributes to the bizarre unreality of the discourse chapo has exported in podcast form
― Treeship, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:16 (nine years ago)
and most DSA types are not on social media at all
idk about this...

take it with a grain of salt if you like, but I've seen quite a few instances of chapter heads asking their membership how many even have a Twitter acct and finding out it's very low
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:19 (nine years ago)
from the UK perspective (and I gather there are similarities in the US), the issue has been that centrist pundits (rentoul/hodges/deerin/lewis/cohen/freedland/behr/ganesh etc) have just turned out to be consistently wrong and increasingly so, and so smug, condescending and unwilling to engage with it nor willing to update their analyses for the world as it now actually is. all the while getting paid handsomely to regurgitate their tepid analyses. imo you should be given these platforms (and chunky salaries) based on your insight and demonstrable understanding of the political context imo otherwise its the philosophers' ship* for you. especially when 40% of ppl have just voted for a left platform, it's time that the left gets represented (toynbee doesn't count).
