^^ this shit is why the official twitter site and app have been useless for me for aeons. With tweetbot not getting with the times, I predict I'll lose my interest in the whole hellhole pretty fast.

Having a 'following' when yr not a weird twitter person/jokester is indeed insidious and, tbh, intimidating. It becomes a nuissance. My gf has 9,000 followers and she's very careful about what she says, how she says it (also to do with politics, tbh, but then everything is politics, especially on twitter). I've about 800 followers iirc but already feel inhibited at times.

Someone please explain to me what the fuck "Don't @ me" means.

When a man hates a woman very much, sometimes he replies to her tweets with mansplainy bullshit that misses the point. Sometimes the woman pre-empts this by saying "don't @me", because "@user" is how you reply to someone.

I feel like I'm rapidly coming to the end of my rope with political/argumentative/current affairs Twitter - not exactly sure why but it's something to do with 1) anything I could say is already being said better by someone else 2) i have evidence of this phenomenon in all the vaguely similar "zings" etc that litter my timeline

tracer i encourage you to quit and then start over. i did, i like it a lot more now, even though it's like 90% the same experience. when i got on twitter a few years ago i was trying to 'keep track of the discourse' and it was awful.

there are services out there that will mass delete and unfollow for you.

I've been considering burning down my entire social media presence for a couple weeks now and I finally emptied the gas can on it and threw the match on it. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc. etc. Zeroed out and gone.

Of course because I never considered ILX to be "social media" as there's no up/down voting, liking, faving or anything that turns conversation into incentivized transactions.

Its pretty good to mix political stuff with the weirder things like dril (although that's pretty unique as its not v political - unlike @Hippo, say). Lots of funny shit comes into my TL to temper the awful news feed.

Don't think its gonna last but have a look at McDonald's Hong Kong. So good.

Twitter is not gonna last, no five years (at most). Once an extreme addict (and I know the cured seem to be the worst opponents to their former addiction) but twitter is p much dead to me. Dipped my toes into it tonight after months of absence, during a tv thing that was supposed to be bonding, but the only ppl left seem to be ppl stanning hard for the exreme right or left; no nuance whatsoever. No leverage. No attempt at discussion. Nothing. It makes me hate my friends, my ~twitter friends~, and most of all myself. Rip twitter. Its death cannot come soon enough.

There is quite a lot of nuance on twitter - and you can avoid a lot of politics if you are simply fed up of it. Film and book-twitter are pretty good.

Recommendations? I avoided Twitter until, like, two weeks ago, mostly so that I could tweet at Google and complain I did not get my hard earned free socks (long story). But then I was all, hey, I'm on twitter, what should I do? So I followed a dozen or so political things, and then ... stopped following people. Mostly because, like Facebook, I get the distinct feeling it is not showing me everything I want to see, not in order, not comprehensively, just sort of AI curated. Facebook, for example, I would peak at on my phone, think huh, then move to my computer for a better read and get different stuff. Facebook, fwiw, I need to stay in touch with certain friends and family. Twitter is more to kill time in airports and trains and stuff, but maybe I'm using it wrong? Oh, I did use it to contact the lead guitarist of the Cars with a question, and he got back to me, so maybe that makes it all worth while?

I got into it with an Oklahoma manufactured homes dealer on the Fourth of July because their home page had a photo of the Sydney Harbour Bridge during a New Years Eve fireworks display. Afterward, I was all oh yeah, this is what twitters all about.
