i enjoy my current twitter feed bubble of former SA forums jokesters and video game leftists and a couple ppl who just post architecture photos and sci-fi art. in the current climate it's really easy to end up with a feed that's like 90% politics even if that's not what you want out of the site.

― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2017 15:27 (eight years ago)
my feed has been bumming me out a lot. leftist twitter is bad. my professional feed stuff, which was why i first signed up for twitter in the first place, is 50% social justice wokeness competition and self-congratulating and 50% the same boring redundant shit my field has been talking about for the past 10 years. basketball twitter and local city/community stuff the only saving grace for me right now
― marcos, Thursday, 22 June 2017 15:31 (eight years ago)
In a way its not just twitter its everywhere! I was in Otley last week and a woman said to me "did you hear what Trump said about Comey said about Trump said about".
And its inescapable and relentless! People retweeting what other people said about Trump or someone, but even if you don't have twitter people just rebroadcast what Trump or someone else did. Why are the people of Otley or anywhere else going on about this stuff , its become impossible to get the bus without headphones!

― ciderpress, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:05 (eight years ago)

― anvil, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:08 (eight years ago)

― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)

sometimes they are good at twitter
― marcos, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:30 (eight years ago)
hey we all cant bat 1000
whats ur handle marcos
yea the negatives are that 1) they are often dicks; 2) their jokes/digs can be bad and/or opaque; 3) their politics are "trenchant". i also don't care about the podcast fwiw it is kind of unbearable
― marcos, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:32 (eight years ago)
i dont really pod but they cld learn to talk better imo
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:35 (eight years ago)

reasonable
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:53 (eight years ago)
"gentle reminder" wld be a good one
Wow Jeff YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH joeks
Funny though, without politics - or at the very least tweets about articles about politics - I'd render my own twitter experience wholly useless tbh.
I only have two ban words: starwars (from whenever the fuck the last shit film came out) and Banksy (because the number of people who think they are rt'ing Banksy while rt'ing some fan tweet thing is more annoying than Banksy at this point). Much more a people banner/muter tbh (this list runs in the dozens).
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:00 (eight years ago)
RT[^RT]+RT
I've never seen this, and have no clue what it means.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:01 (eight years ago)
i have muted the word trump and that's it.
i am going to try to get more heavily into muting in the future
― -_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:01 (eight years ago)
RT[^RT]+RT mutes retweet chains, which I guess isn't relevant anymore since not many people use old style RT's.

I use twitter strictly for professional stuff, but this joke account popped up on the periphery:

― Dan I., Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:54 (eight years ago)
uh actually i should have posted that in the "who is @bart simpson" or whatever weird twitter thread sorry
― Dan I., Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:08 (eight years ago)
btw who is that supposed "weird twitter" account that not the nyt profile that i've never heard of before
― just another (diamonddave85), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:23 (eight years ago)
xp I see, Jeff. Yeah that kind of died didn't it? (I'm still using tweetbot but it's pretty much useless with all the new twitter ui changes. It can't even properly show a quoted tweet...)
I've a lot to be thankful for wrt Twitter (met my love, writing gigs etc), but I've been in Spain for two months, pretty much completely ignored twitter. And for the first time I can easily imagine it not being in my life (which sounds pathetic, but I was a 24/7 twitter junkie).
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:23 (eight years ago)
now i'm getting this 'feature' that shows me when a follow 'likes' a post. normally i didn't mind but it's showing me the same tweets over and over again, this happening to anyone else? like ya i saw that ed zitron liked that post... yesterday
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)
^^ this shit is why the official twitter site and app have been useless for me for aeons. With tweetbot not getting with the times, I predict I'll lose my interest in the whole hellhole pretty fast.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)
was just speculating on twitter dot com that they mustve discovered that repeat viewings of tweets —increases engagement— or some shit, and we descend further into hell

like on one level i think it's because they're just trying to shovel more Content down yer throat but i wonder if there's a secret lizard brain part that we actually use it because we just like scrolling
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)
pull to refresh is up there with the most devious mechanisms of all time
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)
I don't even have many followers and do minimal engagement and I'm hooked, I can't imagine how insidious it would be to have a following
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:40 (eight years ago)
i bet if u have a ton of followers it kinds sucks at lest from a replies perspective, the faves and rts r prob real good

Worse, I've got auto refresh on :-/
Having a 'following' when yr not a weird twitter person/jokester is indeed insidious and, tbh, intimidating. It becomes a nuissance. My gf has 9,000 followers and she's very careful about what she says, how she says it (also to do with politics, tbh, but then everything is politics, especially on twitter). I've about 800 followers iirc but already feel inhibited at times.
