I have a theory about the crosspost bug. Whenever I try to connect and I've lost the signal (i.e., on the metro) I also frequently get multiple notices. This suggests the bug is in the UIAlertView code or whatever? Just a thought.

Think I've figured out where it is. The way posting an answer works is the Thread object talks to the networking bit to submit the post. It then checks the result, and if there's an xpost it fires off a notification to any interested parties to tell them.
What is meant to happen then is that the view controller for the thread is supposed to hear a notification, check if it's for a thread it cares about, and show an alert if so.
But it seems like old thread view controllers (eg from previous times you have viewed a thread) are hanging around when they should have been destroyed, and they're also hearing the notification and firing off alerts.
It seems like it should be easier than it is to make sure the old view controllers are destroyed, but for some reason I don't yet understand they're not going away properly. Ugh.
― stet, Friday, 14 July 2017 14:00 (eight years ago)
Oh okay. But why the spamming of alerts when I don't have a network connection?
― El Tomboto, Friday, 14 July 2017 14:08 (eight years ago)
Same story, different notification (a "network down" notification they all respond to rather than an "failed to post why because xpost" one)
― stet, Friday, 14 July 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)
aha

bulleted lists don't work so good on Zing. I tried to post one last night and it didn't format correctly: Thread for iOS games 2017-2023: shame, loathing and recommendations
Also, the previous post with bullets, made from desktop, doesn't quite render correctly on Zing, apparently the line breaks after a bulleted list disappear in the thread view (post view renders fine).
― El Tomboto, Friday, 1 September 2017 16:33 (eight years ago)
Did you type underscore or hyphen? It looks like underscore, which won't work. With hyphens:

i updated to iOS 11 the other day, and unfortunately it created two big problems with Zing. First
First, at the bottom of a thread, part of the final message is now hidden behind the bottom bar. It's possible to view the rest of the final message in a thread, but you have to slide all the messages up, and then it disappears behind the bottom bar again as soon as you let go.https://i.imgur.com/5u3lNnD.png
Secondly, and more seriously, whenever I run into the dreaded You = Too Slow cycle, the button to make the notification go away is hidden behind the keyboard:
https://i.imgur.com/0JCzPgb.png
There's no way to move the keyboard, hit cancel and go back, or dismiss the notification, at least not that I can find, so restarting the app is the only way out of the cycle. This makes posting on heavily trafficked threads pretty much impossible.
i might be the only one with this issue because i'm one of the 34 people on earth who have an iPhone SE.
― Karl Malone, Monday, 2 October 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)
I see this issue on my iPhone 7 as well.
― DJI, Monday, 2 October 2017 17:38 (eight years ago)
There’s an update with apple right now which addresses the bottom bounce; don’t know about the other issue.
― Madchen, Monday, 2 October 2017 17:39 (eight years ago)
Yeah, the current fix only sorts two things — the covered-up bottom post and a missing status line. I’ll take a look at the others ASAP
― stet, Monday, 2 October 2017 18:23 (eight years ago)
lol just this second ran into the xpost problem.
anyway, when writing a post in portrait mode, the text you're writing continues off the bottom of the screen with no way to see what you're writing. workaround is to switch to landscape mode. this is on an SE with gboard.

ILX Zing: You = too slowKeyboard: "I... I'm... Yeah"
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 2 October 2017 18:55 (eight years ago)
Oh crap I see that now -- didn't have gboard installed so wouldn't have seen this. Not sure why it's happening though. Will take a look.
F'real, iOS 11 seems super buggy. It has broken things built against the old frameworks even, which is the first I've seen that in a long time.
― stet, Monday, 2 October 2017 19:50 (eight years ago)
Ive updated to 11.01 and I'm still seeing the clipped messages and it isnt just the bottom one - the very top one is clipped off too, so if its the "previous messages" bar it is really hard to click on.
Super annoyed that bcs I swapped phones last week, the simple act of backing up and transferring to newer phone put me on OS11 without me asking, grrr.

Am I the only one for whom zing crashes after viewing a post? And thanks stet!
― brimstead, Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)
I get that crash too ... I can read threads, but if I click on an individual post, then try to go back to the thread, the app quits. This has been going on for a while and still occurs with the latest version of zing. I attributed the problem to the antiquity of my 4s, which can't run any iOS later than 9.3.5, but maybe it's more general?
Also: thanks, stet!
