trying to get GPU tensorflow or theano to work on macos is hard enough on nvidia

are we sure that's not the mac pro replacement?

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 5 June 2017 18:01 (nine years ago)

I'm assuming not. They know there are two complaints...power and upgradability/modularity. This only solves one of those problems.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 18:03 (nine years ago)

their long term strategy has always been to dump upgradability, and if you can do external gpu/storage/etc then they're outsourcing modularity

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 18:06 (nine years ago)

sucks for retouchers who just want a powerful computer and no screen.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 18:08 (nine years ago)

"This isn't a replacement for the Mac Pro however -- Apple says it's still working on a completely redesigned Mac Pro, for (even) higher-end computing in a modular, upgradeable design. Stay tuned, we hope."

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:13 (nine years ago)

I love how marketing listening to music is still like "uh, this will rock you"

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:14 (nine years ago)

"T.C. SOTTEK12:14:21 PM PDT
Truly inspiring that Apple found a use for all those Mac Pro cases nobody was buying."

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:14 (nine years ago)

Does anyone care about stereo any more?

stet, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:15 (nine years ago)

Those with two ears?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:16 (nine years ago)

tbf I have no idea what "stereo" means. two-channel audio? a home system for listening to music that's not attached to your television?

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:17 (nine years ago)

Auditory nerve brain implant projection field reception resonance. Surely.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:19 (nine years ago)

I just for a second thought about an audio file format where you don't have two channels, but a preferred location/depth stream for different parts of the audio

tbh even the mid tier home audio receivers now have the little dongle where you can run through a setup routine to adjust to the acoustics of your room, it's just the audio we're playing doesn't care as much about that

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:21 (nine years ago)

every audiophile who has perfected their home for an exact number of channels would go insane

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:21 (nine years ago)

Wow, Michelle Obama is the new CEO of Apple.

Comey’s gonna use that speaker to listen in on me. Worried... :-(

the ghost of markers, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:32 (nine years ago)

i don't necessarily trust apple, but they do seem like the only company with the ability to build voice-activated hardware that doesn't also have shitty institutional DNA re: surveillance and privacy.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 5 June 2017 19:34 (nine years ago)

agreed, all indications are still that they have no interest in scraping data for reasons other than guiding their own product decisions, which would mean general patterns

the syncing of iMessage conversations seems really nice, but I did start gritting my teeth thinking about the additional data transfer/security bits

it maybe a cynical move motivated by money in that they've identified a influential market (tinfoil nerds) and a profitable market (parents worried about their kids being surveilled/marketed to). i am totally fine with that.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 5 June 2017 19:39 (nine years ago)

isn't that like most biz decision

i n f i n i t y (∞), Monday, 5 June 2017 19:41 (nine years ago)

I think it's partially the fact they don't like marketing any products other than their own and don't want to help people market theirs, unless it's something they sell at their own store

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:42 (nine years ago)

google still thinks of themselves as a company that sells ads, then services, then software, then hardware afaict

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:43 (nine years ago)

the google car will keep asking you if you want to go to wendy's

I keep waiting for the iPad to truly be able to replace a laptop for Photoshop. It looked pretty good today until the demo with the image editing software ended up with this "professional looking poster"

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:25 (nine years ago)

tbh have you seen the new spider-man movie poster? this is... comparable

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

I haven't seen the demo, but Affinity's osx software is pretty nice.

Saw a photo of Grimes in front of an Elektron Machinedrum at the WWDC for some reason.
