Not sure I get the recurrent "trenchant commentary" sarcasm with a lot of this stuff, like these cartoons. Yeah they are simplistic, obvious, etc., but doesn't being on Facebook mean engaging w people who require or are drawn to simple messaging? These cartoons are not at all insightful but they are "accurate" in a broad sense, and evidently in America at least they are not at all obvious to something like 38% of the population.

I don't know, seems like a lot of liberal guilt snobbery at the wrong people but then again I'm "not on Facebook" which is the ultimate snob move

most of the memes on here are neither insightful nor "accurate", reducing complex issues to slogans is a bad thing that makes public discourse worse

I agree w/ that in general! Just not convinced it's a worthwhile position in a messaging battle w/ corporate bots. It's gonna take a lot of people some of them not too sharp to get out from under this mess.

Depends on who you add, surely. Your FB list is determined by your real life friends and family in a way most social media isn't, if there's an echo chamber there it's gonna translate.

My personal experience is people who tend to post these things also tend not to have friends who disagree with their basic premise, or if they do they know better than to engage with them on it.

Though frankly I don't think it's a valid premise from the get-go to think that anyone in America has never been exposed to messages like "corporations are bad", "money doesn't buy happiness" or "x-mas is too commercial".

The trouble is I've never met the type of person these cartoons propose - the totally dumb consumer, someone with a brain covered in NIKE ticks, sucking shit out of a pipe. I know the cartoons are exaggerated, but they're still saying that a type of person or a type of consciousness exists and I'm still not sure it does

Like I think the vulgarity of marketing today is definitely worth noting, crass adverts squirting out of your phone and fridge and toaster and watch, targeted to the absolute lowest common denominator ... but the cartoons seem to think this LCD person actually exists and needs to be woken up.
