HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

one year passes...

I've read most of this thread (up to the end of where I am on the show, end of season 2). I can't believe all this blood was on NBC; it makes us giggle every time there are uber violent slashings.

I should go back and rewatch Wonderfalls. I think I tried when it was on but it didn't grab me. I may be in the minority where the character of Alana Bloom grates on me.

gasp

j., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:37 (seven years ago)

yeah, I've been rooting for her to die. I just keep saying "why is this character so thirsty."

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:40 (seven years ago)

I'd be interested in knowing how much gore was reinstated for the DVDs because, yes, this show is stunningly graphic.

Just remembered that I never actually finished the series because binging all three seasons in one straight shot became incredibly oppressive at a point. Almost unquestionably the darkest show ever aired on network television.

Goody Rickels on the Dime (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:44 (seven years ago)

AFAIK the DVD edits aren't any different? The episodes as originally aired were unbelievably violent

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:48 (seven years ago)

iirc alana has a slight character shift in season 3 that is incredibly excellent

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:53 (seven years ago)

I think I am going to finish all three seasons in 3 weeks (netflix in south america). I don't know. All the gore with the blaséness of Hannibal and the ridiculousness of some situations gives it levity. I didn't read any of the books and have only seen SilenceotL.
It reminds me of The Cell a bit although I haven't seen that since it was in the theaters.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:54 (seven years ago)

LIke the season 2 finale was so extreme we both were laughing.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:55 (seven years ago)

Brad otm

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:00 (seven years ago)

I think the only major change from the tv release is the inclusion of an episode they left out? The one with Molly Shannon (?) in the first season was pulled due to current events involving child murderers.

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:02 (seven years ago)

Alana isn't much of a character really but I like Dhavernas a lot

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:03 (seven years ago)

I thought she was miscast, but then I saw upthread that she was in Wonderfalls so that makes sense now.

I am really glad that they went with Mads over David Tennant. I liked Tennant as the villain in Jessica Jones but his presence is completely different.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:06 (seven years ago)

Wonderfalls is great, and Dhavernas is very different on it.

The murders on this show were so insanely over the top. The totem pole of corpses, the angel wings, the mushroom people!

Roz, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:20 (seven years ago)

I really liked the first couple of seasons of Vikings so the blood eagle (angel wings) was very familiar.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:34 (seven years ago)

the imagery in the grain silo episodes was amazing

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:35 (seven years ago)

I've been enjoying this twitter account lately: https://twitter.com/madsdoingthings

Mads is a ridiculous person.

Roz, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:38 (seven years ago)

I have a friend who admitted she was more interested in Hugh Dancy and his portrayal of Will over Mads

she is dead to me now

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:40 (seven years ago)

I am going to waste so much time today on that twitter.

Hugh Dancy is fine. Ugh imagine if it was him and David Tennant. Much too similar.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:44 (seven years ago)

^^oh god no. Yeah that just wouldn't work at all.

this was great fun btw, i'm kicking myself for not posting about it afterward so i can look back on specifics. Hannibal fans are nerdy and awesome.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 16:45 (seven years ago)

Excuse me, I think you mean Fannibals.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)

There was an early ep of someone encased in a beehive and/or treetrunk iirc? The practical makeup effects for that was breathtaking

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 17:50 (seven years ago)

That was the episode with Amanda Plummer doing lobotomies.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

xxp i stan corrected

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 18:03 (seven years ago)

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Saturday, 16 March 2019 15:53 (seven years ago)

All done. It was great. I might rewatch it all again at the end of the year.

Also, ^^^ I would totally watch them in a show called "Murder Husbands: no subtext"

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 01:59 (seven years ago)

how’d you like the scene where Gillian’s character finds out (or the audience is clued into) who was traditionally fed the diet she’s been on?

mh, Sunday, 17 March 2019 04:38 (seven years ago)

I loved almost all of the trippy first half of S3. I did like Alanna more too. During the kaleidoscope Alanna/Margot scene I said "Oh, they got some payoff for casting two actresses who look a lot alike."

Gah, all of it was so cinematic and darkly funny, I adored it. ( I did start to get a little annoyed at the very metered dialogue though, especially in the Gillian Anderson scenes, but it let me look at her hair more).

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 14:25 (seven years ago)

I am sad it's over.
I did say in the first half of season one that they were so in love with each other. Killing Eve really does a good job of playing with that too.

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 14:29 (seven years ago)

hadn't occurred to me but killing eve kinda is hannibal lite

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 17 March 2019 18:54 (seven years ago)

did you just smell me?

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 17 March 2019 20:14 (seven years ago)

did you just smell me?

totally read this in Sandra Oh's voice lol

Roz, Monday, 18 March 2019 11:21 (seven years ago)

four weeks pass...

just finished season two in my rewatch!!!!! that last episode is still life-ruining

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 02:40 (seven years ago)

it really is

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 April 2019 03:00 (seven years ago)

i'm watching it with my roommate and after we finished the penultimate episode i said "this show has everything! michael pitt eating his own face... everything."

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 03:07 (seven years ago)

Real want to rewatch this again right away, but am trying to let more time pass. Now that I know the shape of the characters, it will be different enough viewing.

And xpost above, I liked Alana a lot more in the 3rd season.

Yerac, Monday, 15 April 2019 13:15 (seven years ago)

rewatch revealed to me that i like alana throughout, although i think it's unfortunate they pair her with hannibal for little reason other than how gross and horrible it is (the dual sex scene however makes it worth it??? i think)

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:17 (seven years ago)

there are a lot of things about season two i'd consider individually weak (some of the serial killers of the week especially sociopathic social worker vs. stable guy sewing dead people into horses; how it takes two full episodes to introduce mason (???)) but the writing and the long game the show is playing make them work

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:20 (seven years ago)

i enjoyed thinking of hannibal as the showrunner of season two, throwing people who had absolutely nothing to do with each other (will/margot/mason) into a weird dramatic plot device about pregnancy. hannibal also casts himself in will graham's role at the very start of the season, so he's basically the writer/director/star of this particular vortex of killings anyway

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:23 (seven years ago)

There should be absolutely no ??? about whether the dual sex scene was worth it.

Yerac, Monday, 15 April 2019 13:50 (seven years ago)

sociopathic social worker vs. stable guy

I enjoyed that episode but I'm also a fan of Jeremy Davies doing Jeremy Davies types of characters

mh, Monday, 15 April 2019 13:57 (seven years ago)

There should be absolutely no ??? about whether the dual sex scene was worth it.

it's one of the finest scenes in the show

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 15:23 (seven years ago)

No one ever made out in a pool of blood did they?

Yerac, Monday, 15 April 2019 15:30 (seven years ago)

Hannibal’s response to the human muralist killer in the grain silo never fails to make me laugh

Killer: There is no god
Hannibal: Certainly not with that attitude

Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 04:31 (seven years ago)

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 05:12 (seven years ago)

We should do an ilx group rewatch of this over some holiday.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:45 (seven years ago)

easter

j., Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:41 (seven years ago)

he is risen and would like some sherry

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:15 (seven years ago)

I was thinking the month of December for the holidays, but I guess that is far off. I think my spouse would get mildly worried if I rewatched it right after we finished.
