In the 80s I had a blue and white plaid flannel that I adored because the squares were so large it looked like something Jaime Hernandez would draw for a Love & Rockets character.

Re: Marvel movies

--

I enjoy p much all of these movies but they suffer from the same major problems

The plot is the same every time

The setup of impossible odds takes up most of the movie and hey ho these odds are defeated in the last five mins

but mostly

It is unthinkable that anyone we care about dies, or even gets hurt beyond a scratch

I'll still catch it in the cinema and undoubtedly have a blast but I mean I have a blast bowling and bowling doesn't cost 70 million dollars to put together and is rarely utterly stupid

Considering how easy it is to share pictures, it's a little weird that lots of visual artists aren't more famous.

The internet is like a new library of images being dumped on everyone's head, every morning. If we don't wake up with billions of images crashing through the bedroom window and jpeg strands in our teeth from the night before, we become agitated but can't clearly explain why

also this striking paragraph

Change the villains. It’s not so hard, really. Just change the villains to something more realistic. Islam is on the rise in America, as is the violence of inner city gangs. Are you scared to do so? In the words of Boltair – “To learn who rules you, simply find out who’s not being criticized.”

i assume they mean voltaire but there's apparently a 'furry artist and fursuiter' out there called talliy boltair and this is a gamergate petition so any of the usual assumptions about reality really need to be jettisoned at the first opportunity

There was always a new nadir somewhere, and now we've found it

imago, Monday, 5 June 2017 16:11 (nine years ago)

one of the differences is that when you work for a public institution you are beholden to the state. what was upsetting with this was that they were charged with an additional authority over the workers. they could report them for breaking rules and have them sent back to prison and likely disciplined if they didn't make these those two happy. this is pretty different from following rules in a public prison. much more easy to abuse this newfound authority. if you look at circa scandals like Paula Jones or the Iraq Air strike to divert attention from the Lewinsky trials, there is a pattern of abusing authority. if you were a prisoner who accidentally saw somebody doing some illegal shit (and working w politicans for decades you probably would) it seems like it you may make some powerful enemies.

this is mostly conjecture tho. the casualness of it is the disturbing thing. it would be interesting to interview these people, maybe they were great family friends and it was a way to legit get out of a cycle of imprisonment. it depends on how much you trust the Clintons, i suppose.

qualx, Friday, 9 June 2017 03:15 (nine years ago)

There's only one movie on here that if someone told me they hadn't seen it I'd tell them "You really gotta see it", and that's "Spirited Away". There's about 10 others I consider pretty good, and one I didn't like much at all ("I'm Not There"). The rest I haven't seen. Lots of good choices on the 6 directors' lists in the linked article. The list definitely should have had more comedy on it.

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Monday, 26 June 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

a friend of mine texted me and reminded me that i engaged in my own mini-fyre fest scam when we were in 3rd grade

me and him and these 2 twin brothers that moved away shortly after made a band called "10,000 Volts" (we had a logo, a lightbulb with 2 lightning bolts like a skull & crossbones, anyway we couldn't play instruments and didn't have any instruments or any songs...but for some reason we thought we could do a concert on the playground, so we made up tickets and sold them....we blew it all on candy at a drugstore on main street.

obviously on some level we had to know we were bullshitting but on some level we thought we could do it. i remember positing that we could make this crappy acoustic guitar at my grandma's house an electic guitar by putting a nail into it, then nailing the other end of a piece of wire into a stereo speaker....

i don't know, i guess we wanted to be legends.

a teacher did end up busting us for selling these fake tickets and we had to pay the candy money back.
