It's a travesty, and whoever gave them that lease was a fool, but does "Eat Street" benefit by being less of a thoroughfare?

Also part of this bit of sad local history:

didn't it get put in for the same reason that they ran the fucking interstate right through the middle of a neighborhood aka racism?

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:39 (nine years ago)

not sure that Lake and Nicollet would be the place for that? foolhardy visions of an urban Southdale seems more plausible.

by the light of the burning Citroën, Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:46 (nine years ago)

xp that's what I'm saying! Feels a little Rondo lite

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:52 (nine years ago)

Total segregation. The Uptown side is white and gentrifying, the other side is new arrivals/black residents.

syzygy stardust (suzy), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:55 (nine years ago)

in 1977?

by the light of the burning Citroën, Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:55 (nine years ago)

Lyndale has always been the dividing line tho in that neighborhood, not the interstate.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:57 (nine years ago)

Hmm yes, definitely - my mom was born around Bloomington and Lake in the 40s on the 'new arrivals' side (Swedish dad, Polish mom, maternal grandmother with a tavern on Lake). The other side has always had MIA and MCAD so a transient student/younger renter population even back then. Also nicer houses between Lake and Franklin.

syzygy stardust (suzy), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:02 (nine years ago)

Wouldn't between Lake and Franklin be what's theoretically getting walled off here?

Lived in this neighborhood pre-K-Mart (though I guess my parents were transient students at the time), and doesn't make sense to me (could well be wrong).

by the light of the burning Citroën, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:07 (nine years ago)

I'd actually submit that a Kmart is actually more beneficial to many of the residents of the neighborhood many of whom rely on public transportation than knocking it down and turning it into more fucking brewpubs. It's actually one of the few stores in that area you can get essentials at non-corner store inflated prices.

Though I'm sure it will eventually be another ugly ass condo with first floor retail

Also true

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:21 (nine years ago)

Man, this Current countdown of listeners' 893 artists is weird. And by weird, I mean super predictable.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 18:45 (nine years ago)

Dave Matthews Band approximately 250 slots higher than Mozart.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 18:47 (nine years ago)

well I'm going to be irrationally angry for the rest of the day now

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 18:47 (nine years ago)

LOL, no need to listen now. It's gotten past the amusingly oddball/random phase and is settling decisively into the boring phase. Just holding out hope that somehow Bjork places higher than Dessa tbh.

http://m.startribune.com/the-yanez-jurors-a-snapshot/428447093/

Juror 10: A middle-aged white male who is retired from preprinting work, he said he followed news about the case off and on. He said he had seen Reynolds' Facebook video. "She seemed overly calm" he said on his juror questionnaire. He owns a handgun and hunts.

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 20:32 (nine years ago)

Jeez, the number of jurors who claim only passing familiarity with the cast at best ...

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 20:40 (nine years ago)

10 of the Trumpiest folks in Ramsey co. and 2 black people

Dan I., Wednesday, 14 June 2017 20:53 (nine years ago)

Doesn't speak well of the prosecution's competence.

Dan I., Wednesday, 14 June 2017 20:54 (nine years ago)

FWIW, the jury foreperson:

Juror 6: A white male in his 40s who is the jury foreperson. A wellness coach for the last seven years, he believes too many "victimless" crimes are prosecuted, including drug use and sex work. He believes marijuana should be legalized. He said he was "somewhat isolated" and knew nothing about the Yanez case.

So one fewer Trumpy folk.

xxxxpost

having worked downtown for a little more than 2 yrs now
the nicollet project has been almost bafflingly mishandled...like to an unreal degree

also it's like they are turning a street w/sidewalks into a....street w/sidewalks

they act like it's the big dig in boston or some shit

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 21:06 (nine years ago)

Worse sidewalks on top of that.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 21:07 (nine years ago)

You've got about 16 years to go before you can say the Nicollet Project has been mishandled as badly as the Big Dig.

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 21:22 (nine years ago)

sorry, 14 years

not including the 9 years of preplanning

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 21:23 (nine years ago)

I'm enjoying the "how do we get in the building today?" part of the project.

it's one of those clusterfucks that looks so ridiculous I want to see it if I'm in town

I'd hurry up to do so, but it sounds like I have time

speaking of clusterfucks, outside of the controversy, how's the walker's new sculpture garden?

mh, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:33 (nine years ago)

i'll let you know when i see it --- NEXT WEEK

(btw i go to mpls next week)

gbx, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:49 (nine years ago)

they literally are calling the nicollet project 'the big build' so

I have been a Minnesotan for 20 days and there are many things I appreciate about this state.

Dan I., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:29 (eight years ago)

two months pass...

don't go to club jager!

goole, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 20:56 (eight years ago)

*googles*

what the ever-loving hell

mh, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 21:01 (eight years ago)

rumors and stories about this place have been around for a while:

https://stephenhero.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/clubhouse-jager-uber-alles/

i have to admit i've gone there quite a bit! it's a nice old bar, good dj nights. oh well, good night.

goole, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 21:18 (eight years ago)

are there actual racist skinheads (jesus christ even typing that, what year is this?) in the twin cities?

down here we've got some dudes who seem like ska/punk holdovers who have kind of morphed into the dudes into their 30s who maybe get into fixing up cafe racer motorcycles or vespas and will show up, there's always the one dude with suspenders, a couple guys with shaved heads, afaik very anti-racist. more tattooed since it's 2017

there's a little overlap with a slightly younger crowd who I think of as "hardcore punk dudes who occasionally reunite their old bands and dj reggae nights" and they're definitely not anywhere near this level of shitheadery

mh, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 21:40 (eight years ago)

the one time i went there, the style of the place seemed... gratuitous, but who knows

j., Wednesday, 30 August 2017 00:00 (eight years ago)

p4nz3rf4ust records were in frikkin newport mn iirc

i initially hated club jager just because of the name but ended up liking it for the good dance nights (soul music usually) and the great outdoor area

a friend of mine from HS (catch her on project runway!!!) i think rented from the guy, and her husband was the jager bar manager, and they're both cutting ties at great personal expense -- if you know of studio space for a fashion designer and have a job for a bar manager, hmu

gbx, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 04:00 (eight years ago)

also as a heads-up apparently the staff there are getting all kinds of harassment, despite the what-i-would-think-was-obvious fact that none of them knew about the political leanings of the landlord
