Calhoun Cycle, in the neighborhood, changed its name, with fanfare, to Perennial Cycle:

oh wow! totally missed that, kudos perennial cycle
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:30 (nine years ago)
yeah idk about any furor but this thing did pass the park board
there's a totally unclear path thru another fortyodd layers of gov't before anything is changed tho
― goole, Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:35 (nine years ago)
i don't think there's a set-in-stone process for changing the name of a lake
useful to compare it to the ad-hoc and marketing/FIRE sector fussing with neighborhood names
― goole, Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:37 (nine years ago)
I never really thought neighborhoods were too official but, like, lakes seem a little more, uh, concrete

Oh shit I haven't been paying attention to this thread, welcome to Dan M
― jjjusten, Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:40 (nine years ago)
speaking of which, a neighbor clued me into this: there are hyperlocal filters available in snapchat, and the little decal for my neighborhood includes my actual building. there's a cartoon version of my actual windowbox, to put on your nudes.
― goole, Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:42 (nine years ago)
lol
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:44 (nine years ago)
so we could put em right on yer window if we wanted?! sweet
― j., Thursday, 4 May 2017 17:08 (nine years ago)
It never occurred to me during the whole argument about Yale's Calhoun College that it might be named for the same person as Calhoun Lake.
― Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Thursday, 4 May 2017 17:11 (nine years ago)
without asking i know there's an online service that will print your dick pic as a window decal, isn't there
yeah, secretary of war during MN's territorial period i think

Washington Ave. north of the Vu is sure surreal to someone who grew up here. Walked it for the first time tonight, having moved away almost 20 years ago. Very much a similar feeling to walking through a neighborhood of mansions, thinking "Who are all these people? How do they afford it?"

Treehouse Records closing :(
― global tetrahedron, Monday, 8 May 2017 21:06 (nine years ago)
i mourn it as a landmark and a place that meant a lot to me at a certain time though i had personally been banned from there and have many many issues w/said proprietor

BANNED?
― j., Tuesday, 9 May 2017 01:50 (nine years ago)
i only had good times there but am a newcomer to the area so idk. saw lots of good inhouse shows, met some nice people and got cool records there
― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 03:08 (nine years ago)
also he's absolutely closing it to rent the location out to a higher-grossing business and loaf about in his retirement
― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 03:10 (nine years ago)
i think i only ever bought like one record there, in the past 15 years - just didn't seem to be any draw over the fetus or cheapo
― j., Tuesday, 9 May 2017 03:18 (nine years ago)
Bummed that Treehouse is closing, but I'm way more upset that Evergreen (the restaurant) is closing at the end of June.
― JRN, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 04:22 (nine years ago)
oh shit really?? frikkin love Evergreen
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 12:49 (nine years ago)
also i think i went to treehouse exactly once, and the fetus maybe four or five times -- i was always a cheapo guy
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 12:51 (nine years ago)
I can't stop calling it Oarfolk in my head (a friend worked there for years).
― syzygy stardust (suzy), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 13:18 (nine years ago)
nicollet/26th is gentrifying quick, i bet a lot of the legacy 'eat street' places like evergreen will leave after awhile
― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 13:28 (nine years ago)
little t's has a liquor license now (while i am as interesting as ever)
― goole, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 20:27 (nine years ago)
saw a picture on ilxor Eric's fb page where Nicollet was all torn up, are they just redoing the road or is something else going on?
― mh, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 21:17 (nine years ago)
they're tearing it up and leaving that way forever
― goole, Thursday, 11 May 2017 01:19 (nine years ago)
It sure seems that way tbh.

the Kmart on lake is one of the most successful in the country??http://m.startribune.com/in-hopes-of-reopening-nicollet-avenue-minneapolis-may-spend-7-million-on-kmart-site/422849923/
― goole, Thursday, 18 May 2017 02:12 (nine years ago)
uhhhh
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 18 May 2017 02:35 (nine years ago)
Kmart's lease at the site doesn't expire until 2053.
what the hell
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 18 May 2017 02:36 (nine years ago)
i know, it's wild
― goole, Thursday, 18 May 2017 03:02 (nine years ago)
is that the one where the road runs into the parking lot? maybe people accidentally drive in and figure they'll do some shopping
― mh, Thursday, 18 May 2017 14:05 (nine years ago)
it's the worst
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 18 May 2017 14:06 (nine years ago)
I really wonder how a pretty notable street came to stop, turn into a k-mart, and then continue
― mh, Thursday, 18 May 2017 14:09 (nine years ago)
The city has tried unsuccessfully to reach an agreement with Kmart that would allow Nicollet Avenue to reopen while store operations continue, said David Frank, the city's director of economic policy and development.
i can kinda understand kmart balking at this. what could the city tell them? "yeah, the store can stay open, we're just gonna, sort of run a road right through the fuckin middle of it, and the parking lot"

from what i've pieced together, 70s redevelopment ideas were about as bad as they are now, just different.
― goole, Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:13 (nine years ago)
Today, it almost feels like it was a move to intentionally block off one section of neighborhood from the other.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:14 (nine years ago)
as someone who doesn't live in mpls, but has been there enough times to mostly navigate without checking a map by knowing cardinal directions and major streets, I've been bitten by driving into the dead ends on *both* ends of that fucking k-mart
― mh, Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:18 (nine years ago)
instead of this busy street with old storefronts and people hanging around, why not have a big new superstore with ample parking, like in the suburbs!
xp yeah it's a huge pain. i hope they work something out.
