Fwiw iirc the creators of the blm name can't stand deray bc of coopting the name for his own gain kinda stuff. I've read a few black activists as critical of him for being a craven opportunist and coattail rider.

not everyone has a new yorker editor as their dad
― maura, Saturday, 22 April 2017 14:12 (nine years ago)
He is. He filed to run for mayor of Baltimore literally at the last hour, only campaigned outside the city, fundraised in Manhattan, and barely did anything here. I really resent him, I think he's an opportunistic hack most interested in promoting his own image and brand (the vest). A lot of people here feel the same way - go run for mayor as a publicity stunt in some other city, asshole.
I loved him at first - he was a great talking head (destroyed Wolf Blitzer two years ago), and im really bummed he's bought and paid for. Just because he's an anti-racism advocate doesn't mean he's immune to criticism.
― flappy bird, Saturday, 22 April 2017 14:15 (nine years ago)
OTM flappy. The worst part is that Deray keeps denying he's sponsored, which makes his whole brand smack of dishonesty.
https://storify.com/DeployBurners/is-deray-a-corporate-shill
― Handsome Bookor, Saturday, 22 April 2017 14:41 (nine years ago)
There is absolutely no proof that Deray is sponsored, and loudly claiming otherwise smacks of racism.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 22 April 2017 15:04 (nine years ago)
Frederik you're out of your depth. I live here. There's a lot of skepticism re Deray's motives, and it doesn't fall on racial lines. Also there is plenty of evidence that's been posted above.
― flappy bird, Saturday, 22 April 2017 15:18 (nine years ago)
he is an anti-racism advocate, not an anti-capitalist one
this is an absurd statement
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 15:19 (nine years ago)
Fred what you're doing is called trolling
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 22 April 2017 15:26 (nine years ago)
I'm aware of the rifts and grudges in the blm-movement - iirc the 'founders' had to cancel an event in St Louis because everyone hates them so much there. And of course it's fine to criticize Deray - for instance his involvement with TFA since he tried to run on an education platform in Baltimore, and got a job there from the administration. But no, there is no evidence of sponsoring, and nothing that was posted above is evidence of sponsoring. And claiming otherwise really does smack of racism. He says he likes a bunch of brands, and while nobody has to agree, claiming that it makes him 'bought' is bullshit.
The irony is of course that we're having a discussion about this on a thread for a group of guys who takes thousands of dollars for making political podcasts that's basically just jokes about Aron Sorkin...
― Frederik B, Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:02 (nine years ago)
lol @ comparing taking money from subscribers vs taking money from exploitative monstrous corporations
and come on Fred, I used to follow Deray but the endorsements were really over the top. suspecting that he could be a paid shill has absolutely fucking nothing to do with race, it has to do with actual things he tweets over and over and over

Fred do you know it's a worse sin in parts of this country to shill for shit without getting a payout? Like I guess maybe he's building brand synergy and hoping Doritos shouts him out or genuinely thinks advertising consumption is chill, but those are lesser dumb looks
― a landlocked exclave (mh), Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:31 (nine years ago)
It's like there's half of a post missing, mh. But from what I gather, I'm absolutely fine with what you're saying. If you look at his twitter and think there's too much bullshit in-between his activist tweets, that's fine - with 193.000 tweets and counting, there's a lot of bullshit. I too have unfollowed activists because they were unbearable otherwise. It doesn't really have anything to do with their activism, though. And claiming that he's paid to do it is bullshit.

it's a extremely good and self-aware that a podcast by 3 white dudes who Made It Ok For White Leftists To Make Fun Of Social Justice Again that's never had a black woman on as a guest in over 100 episodes is getting ahead of the cart in ridiculing one of the most visible anti-racism activists in the country on some reheated AdBusters shit for tweeting about eating a sub
― flopson, Saturday, 22 April 2017 18:19 (nine years ago)
deray has been mentioned way more itt than he ever has on the podcast, maybe 2-3 tame remarks that I can recall?

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 April 2017 07:00 (nine years ago)
You agree with that guy? That if black people aren't anti-capitalist enough, they should shut up about racism?
― Frederik B, Sunday, 23 April 2017 07:42 (nine years ago)
"To paraphrase Max Horkheimer, whoever is not prepared to talk about capitalism should also remain silent about racism"
This is shitty thing for a White anti-racist to say.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 23 April 2017 07:48 (nine years ago)
JFC Fredrik, no one should shut up about injustice, but it's completely fair to point out conflicts of interest where they plainly exist. Is this really that hard to grasp
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 April 2017 07:52 (nine years ago)
Lol, I quoted the tweet you tried to link to. JFC indeed.

Frederik what's up with ovaltine being banned in Denmark

You're deliberately choosing the most obtuse interpretation of that quote and (I hope, for your own sake) you know it
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:01 (nine years ago)
(xp lol)
Nah, it's a shitty tweet. At best poorly worded. But that's still giving the benefit of the doubt to the white tweeter with the black avatar telling black people how racism really works.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:22 (nine years ago)
Yet you a Danish man is constantly telling us what we should think about racism.
― -_- (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:33 (nine years ago)
so is yr issue with the (ostensibly?) white tweeter or the original quote from a pioneering black civil rights activist, Fred
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:37 (nine years ago)
I was wondering how long this would go before someone asked if Fred knew who Stokely Carmichael was.
― El Tuomasbot (milo z), Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:57 (nine years ago)
That quote is not from Carmichael
― Frederik B, Sunday, 23 April 2017 09:00 (nine years ago)
Are you reading the same tweet?? The tweet Simon linked consists entirely of a famous quote from Carmichael that begins "If a white man wants to lynch me..."
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 April 2017 11:23 (nine years ago)

lol yeah I don't give a shit about the tweeter and didn't even see that, I cared about the original tweet's quote vs fred's "anti racist not anti capitalist" sentiment. And now I hate myself for dragging this on this long

so uh anyway the rob delaney segment was surprisingly OK but the closing song was really just the worst thing they've ever done
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 24 April 2017 06:39 (nine years ago)
Delaney is so grating, his whole style really irritates me. Hard to describe but reminded me of a discussion on Cum Town about a certain type of comedy that was super prevalent in like 2008, the example was this: "I was carrying around and eating two different kinds of ice cream cones...as you do."
