everybody on ilx complains about reddit

I almost always regret going on Reddit, but /r/ObscureMedia is a great resource, so there's that at least.

askhistorians is good in that it's heavily moderated and seems to have avoided the fascist troll epidemic, but most of the questions are people looking for homework answers or researching their fantasy novel and there's no discussion.

I'm subscribed to a wide variety of animal GIF subs. Reddit definitely wins out over ILX for cats being assholes and adorable puppies.

weird technical interest subreddits are cool because its just a place where people will find affinities. ditto like fan reddits for some adult swim show or whatever. occasionally browse /r/cooking, and despite the grating house style can be entertained by /r/talesfromtechsupport

the DIY and somethingimade reddits are sometimes good browsing if you're into that stuff. Lots of dreck but people will put up some interesting woodworking and crafts.

I have independently thought of basically every branch of philosophy I've come across. Every question of existentialism which I've seen discussed in SMBC or xkcd or Reddit or anywhere else, the thoughts haven't been new to me. Philosophy has pretty much gotten trivial for me; I've considered taking a philosophy course just to see how easy it is.

i usta lurk /r/AskHistorians but they kind of have a scale issue. answers are heavily moderated but questions, last i read, aren't, so there's a sea of upvoted-to-the-moon and unanswered stupid nazi questions and actually finding good content is trickier. you can actually the subreddit by new answers which works better for finding content but overall reddit as a site isn't suited to what askhistorians are trying to do.

my guilty pleasure (because i'm _really trying_ to stay the hell away from reddit) is /r/VintageObscura. lots of good old stuff there.
