bojack is far more grounded and kind-hearted than rick and morty, tho rick and morty is more laugh out loud funny. Besides being two excellent animated shows, I don't really see many similarities between the two.

Bojack is devastating. imo R&M is slightly lighter subject matter.

Any similarities were mentioned here: http://www.avclub.com/article/bojack-horseman-rick-and-morty-and-art-cynical-sin-223245

I sort of think if you don't dig the pilot at least a bit you won't dig the rest of it. I thought the pilot was great.

chap, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 08:58 (nine years ago)

the second episode had Scary Terry and robot dogs ("Where are my testicles, Summer?") so if you don't get on board there I don't know what to tell you.

I loathed the pilot. Couldn't get on board with the show until Mr Meeseeks.

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:27 (nine years ago)

I agree that meeseeks is where it takes off. the vocal tics take a lot of getting used to.

The pilot was a little rough, but Scary Terry got me hooked. "Awwwww, bitch!" was a turning point.

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:33 (nine years ago)

pilot's fine, but it's difficult to get a solid read on the show from one episode. i mean, you shouldn't be getting "family guy" out of it...

kid has daydream of fondling girl's breasts, but oh no! he is fondling his teacher's moobs! the lolz! then loads of bum and poo jokes coz lol bum and lol poo

will give it more chances but that was a very, very inauspicious opening gambit

Later episodes do focus more on the meta science fictional than the scatalogical.

chap, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:52 (nine years ago)

xp five more minutes of this and I'm gonna get mad!

Not my fault this is happening

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:56 (nine years ago)

I'm glad to know that you're above any and all scatalogical types of humor. Bully for your evolved attitude toward poop and boobs

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:57 (nine years ago)

Rick Potion No. 9.

that was the episode where i realized this show was amazing. it's a p ridiculous episode but they slow things down at the end and it is nothing short of fantastic.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:58 (nine years ago)

Pilot charmed me by setting up the premise of the Doc/Marty relationship where Doc is a raging drunk who pulls Marty out of bed in the middle of the night for some insane adventure he's caught himself up in. Which alone is pretty funny and engaging enough to outweigh "moob" jokes or whatever that I don't even remember.

IDK, pilot episodes are tricky because it seems like anyone getting into a successful, well-loved show once it's established approaches them sneering, arms crossed, and all IMPRESS ME pretty much always.

circa1916, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:04 (nine years ago)

Show me what you got!

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:10 (nine years ago)

I went into the show via the simulation episode and worked backwards. that worked out pretty well.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:13 (nine years ago)

Jerry's B-plot in the simulation episode is my favorite family storyline of the series.

You're now listening to earth radio. Here's "Human Music."

My man!

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:17 (nine years ago)

when the generic guy kept saying "my man" i LOLed cos I imagined Big HOOS saying it....

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:20 (nine years ago)

Please save us all and this thread and quit watching now lj

jjjusten, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:20 (nine years ago)

Although the "Jerry daycare" b-plot is also pure gold, as is "Jerry and Beth hit a deer."

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 14:23 (nine years ago)

LJ i love you but i really don't think this show is for you.

Bobson Dugnutt (ulysses), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 16:33 (nine years ago)

i saw the pilot and first couple of eps but quickly lost interest. "Back to the Future But Drunk" as a premise is not very interesting.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 21:57 (nine years ago)

haha i like that premise

nxd, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 21:59 (nine years ago)

total rickall i think is my fav episode of anything tbf

nxd, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 22:00 (nine years ago)

Human music. I like it!

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 22:03 (nine years ago)

FFS, "Back to the Future but drunk" doesn't exactly do justice to where this show goes, was just the initial hook for me in the first episode. But tbr that probably is enough of a premise to build a funny cartoon tv show, fuiud.

circa1916, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 22:27 (nine years ago)

I am clearly an idiot for not recognising the back to the future link. Great show, the micro universes one in the second series had me it stitches.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 23:01 (nine years ago)

my brother and sil dressed as marty + jennifer for purim and their baby as doc and we realized that they could've just as easily have been morty, summer + rick.

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 23:04 (nine years ago)

TINY Rick

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 23:23 (nine years ago)

aw :) rick and mordy!

nxd, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 23:26 (nine years ago)

I didn't figure out the BTTF thing until I stumbled across the first short.

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 03:52 (nine years ago)

it only occurred to me sorta out of the blue like last week

jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 15:16 (nine years ago)

Just rewatched the pilot again and it's probably the best pilot they could make for something like this. Don't really see it as any outlier, but obv. your appreciation for this show or any other depends on some amount of familiarity.

This is the moment I knew this show was special:

the new one was very good, "darkest year of our adventures" doesn't seem like a stretch

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 02:39 (eight years ago)

i hope jerry remains a minor character. i hate how the simpsons turned into the homer show.

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 05:27 (eight years ago)

I agree, Jerry is the one character who seems like an archetype (he particularly reminds me of Randy Marsh).

chap, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 14:58 (eight years ago)

Mordy killing people with buff arm and simultaneously apologizing was dope

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)

i lol'd hard out loud 5-6 times this ep so i guess the magic has not worn off yet

Mordy, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 17:23 (eight years ago)

Both of the scenes with Rick's Summer and Morty robots were great. "Save it for the Semantics Dome, E.B. White" was a line for the ages.

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)

holy crap, that line killed me.

Also, when robot Morty freaked out and then rebooted.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 17:36 (eight years ago)

yes robot morty was my favorite part of the episode

"haha ah jeez, my sister died in the spaghetti"
