bojack is far more grounded and kind-hearted than rick and morty, tho rick and morty is more laugh out loud funny. Besides being two excellent animated shows, I don't really see many similarities between the two.

Bojack is devastating. imo R&M is slightly lighter subject matter.

I sort of think if you don't dig the pilot at least a bit you won't dig the rest of it. I thought the pilot was great.

the second episode had Scary Terry and robot dogs ("Where are my testicles, Summer?") so if you don't get on board there I don't know what to tell you.

I loathed the pilot. Couldn't get on board with the show until Mr Meeseeks.

I agree that meeseeks is where it takes off. the vocal tics take a lot of getting used to.

The pilot was a little rough, but Scary Terry got me hooked. "Awwwww, bitch!" was a turning point.

pilot's fine, but it's difficult to get a solid read on the show from one episode. i mean, you shouldn't be getting "family guy" out of it...

kid has daydream of fondling girl's breasts, but oh no! he is fondling his teacher's moobs! the lolz! then loads of bum and poo jokes coz lol bum and lol poo

will give it more chances but that was a very, very inauspicious opening gambit

Later episodes do focus more on the meta science fictional than the scatalogical.

that was the episode where i realized this show was amazing. it's a p ridiculous episode but they slow things down at the end and it is nothing short of fantastic.

Pilot charmed me by setting up the premise of the Doc/Marty relationship where Doc is a raging drunk who pulls Marty out of bed in the middle of the night for some insane adventure he's caught himself up in. Which alone is pretty funny and engaging enough to outweigh "moob" jokes or whatever that I don't even remember.

IDK, pilot episodes are tricky because it seems like anyone getting into a successful, well-loved show once it's established approaches them sneering, arms crossed, and all IMPRESS ME pretty much always.

Show me what you got!

I went into the show via the simulation episode and worked backwards. that worked out pretty well.

Jerry's B-plot in the simulation episode is my favorite family storyline of the series.

i saw the pilot and first couple of eps but quickly lost interest. "Back to the Future But Drunk" as a premise is not very interesting.

FFS, "Back to the Future but drunk" doesn't exactly do justice to where this show goes, was just the initial hook for me in the first episode. But tbr that probably is enough of a premise to build a funny cartoon tv show, fuiud.

I am clearly an idiot for not recognising the back to the future link. Great show, the micro universes one in the second series had me it stitches.

my brother and sil dressed as marty + jennifer for purim and their baby as doc and we realized that they could've just as easily have been morty, summer + rick.

Just rewatched the pilot again and it's probably the best pilot they could make for something like this. Don't really see it as any outlier, but obv. your appreciation for this show or any other depends on some amount of familiarity.

i hope jerry remains a minor character. i hate how the simpsons turned into the homer show.

I agree, Jerry is the one character who seems like an archetype (he particularly reminds me of Randy Marsh).

Mordy killing people with buff arm and simultaneously apologizing was dope

Both of the scenes with Rick's Summer and Morty robots were great. "Save it for the Semantics Dome, E.B. White" was a line for the ages.

holy crap, that line killed me.

Also, when robot Morty freaked out and then rebooted.

yes robot morty was my favorite part of the episode
