(although it's much more impressive on a theater screen, w/ those desert vistas shot by Leon Shamroy)

Original POTA boasts maybe the greatest shot in cinema history:

I've always assumed that had to be intentional. Surely.
― Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 March 2017 18:46 (nine years ago)
lol yes.
not only does it look and sound great, it is very much classic sci fi. commenting on age and race and class and all kinds of social/political issues through the lens of THE FUTURE.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 19:15 (nine years ago)
also kind of kick-started the pre-Star Wars era where all sci fi was dystopian commentary
thus necessitating the wookie

it's kind of a shame i limited myself to theatrical series because Leprechaun 4: In Space probably deserved some attention here.

Didn't vote, but I've only seen Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, which is good, and the top two finishers, which ARE NOT *BAD* MOVIES. The others are either from series I had no interest in, or cash-ins you could smell in the next county.
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 05:44 (eight years ago)
ahh c'mon phantom menace is a disaster. leaden shuffling around, no story, no emotions, pathetic world-building, racism...
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 05:52 (eight years ago)
one peg down from Return of the Jedi...
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 06:11 (eight years ago)
when's the last time you watched either? serious question. imho jedi is a pretty good if unfocused kids' adventure movie with some clunky carpentry showing and some pacing/structure issues, but charismatic performances and a ton of craft on the screen, ranking high for the genre and time period. it's nothing on the previous two, but a good afternoon's viewing with very little to outright cringe at. phantom menace is so, so narratively inert and comparing the two really makes me like jedi more since i realize: wow, i know what the characters' motivations are! wow, the people stuck delivering exposition try to make something of it! etc....
to be fair, phantom's still not as bad as the followups. attack of the clones really is like the death of cinema. now i wonder if i should do a 'fifth' thread.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 06:26 (eight years ago)
Crystal skull is utter shit.
But most of these movies are utter shit tbf.
Will rep for Bourne 4
― Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 09:55 (eight years ago)
pls make a fifth thread doc

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_series_with_five_entries
Can't say I have a lot of enthusiasm either way once serieses get to 5.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 14:59 (eight years ago)
Revenge of the Nerds 4 deserved to be on this list
― frogbs, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:01 (eight years ago)
xpost You and everyone involved in making the fifth installment of a series.
― Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)
cool yeah imma get on this later today probs
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:03 (eight years ago)
I think we can avoid the painful poll by collectively agreeing that Seed of Chucky is clearly the best fifth movie in any series.
― Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:04 (eight years ago)
FYI, that wiki list seems to be for series that tapped out at five installments. The visionaries which exceeded the bounds of sanity to create six or more films have been sadly excluded.
― Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:06 (eight years ago)
No film with the fridge scene is "utter shit."
Doc C, I haven't seen Phantom Menace since '98, cuz why would I?
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:07 (eight years ago)
I guess I figured you'd have at least made it out to its original theatrical run in '99 (sorry, couldn't resist).Yeah, last time round I spent a lot of time in the thick of Wiki pages for 11-installment series and stuff. Think I'll just start from the 4ths and see what got a 5th, with a little skimming around for anything I might have missed.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:09 (eight years ago)
98/99, same thing :)
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:10 (eight years ago)
Tied with Final Destination 5.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:10 (eight years ago)
Fridge scene was great. The scene that, had it been excised from Crystal Skull, people *might* have gotten off its nuts a little bit more is Shia with the monkeys.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:12 (eight years ago)
And yeah the fridge scene and the stuff at Harvard is all solid. Lesser Spielberg but not unrecognizable and some nicely-staged action despite the distracting CGI. It really goes off a cliff hard right after the Harvard chase, though, and the opening stuff at the warehouse is really lacking a sense of magic or larger-than-lifeness.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:12 (eight years ago)
Spielberg had a number of "It's George's baby" quotes about that one
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)
Shia was George's baby?!
That explains a few things.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:15 (eight years ago)
I just finished that recent Lucas biography and yeah, Spielberg quotes indicate that -- at least on that particular one -- when it comes to the Indy films he considers himself a for-hire director who executes George's vision, not a collaborator.

I....enjoyed Fast Five. It's still the only FATF film I've seen
― imago, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:17 (eight years ago)
Fridge scene is utter shit

THE utter shit
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:23 (eight years ago)
Jeez, how many 5 film series would you even consider watching?
For me... Frankenstein, Dracula, Winners/Gambler, Mr Vampire (first is very overrated but I could deal), Cremaster, Zatoichi, Lassie, Monty Python (this barely counts because I don't consider the live show a proper sequel), Police Story, Once Upon A Time In China, The Street Fighter, Lone Wolf And Cub, Romero's Dead series.
Maybe Gods Must Be Crazy, I gave up early on the first film but the later films are martial arts crossover.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:29 (eight years ago)
iirc the fifth Friday the 13th is bad but there are some worthwhile ones afterwards
― Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:30 (eight years ago)

it features the immortal outhouse death so i can't say it's bad exactly but it's one of the less good ones
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:34 (eight years ago)
the worthwhile friday installments after five are: ... pretty much just jason lives
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)
is that the one that opens with the SWAT team fakeout? that one RULES
― Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)
no that is jason goes to hell
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)
The 7th is pretty OK, but yeah, that's the last one that's any good.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)
which, i guess, simon, you are and i are the only two people on earth who think that movie rules xp
imo jason lives is one of the coolest action movies ever made so i'm not knocking it
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:37 (eight years ago)
clearly I'm due a series rescreen
― Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:37 (eight years ago)
I'm in the obvious minority in thinking that Jason Goes to Hell is the best in the series by far. I mean, it's not good, but it's completely batshit and at least has the bravery to barely be a Friday the 13th movie.
― Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:49 (eight years ago)
