xpost Because if you have superpowers you're trying to hide from others, you naturally want to put yourself in situations which make that as difficult as possible. Like inviting someone on a jog when you have super speed powers.

the double date thing is obviously intended as Silver Age-style hijinks, similar to the good Superman vs. Bad Superman fight in III or spinning the earth backwards in time in I, it's just executed really badly.

(altho tbh I would probably be the lone fan of a Superman movie that was wall-to-wall Silver Age hijinks)

Superman gets turned into a baby, Lex Luthor tricks Lois into marrying him, Jimmy Olsen trapped on Bizarro planet, etc.

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

I would stan hard for a Supes movie with Mister Mxyzptlk as the villian, portrayed accurately and not by fucking Howie Mandel or whatever dude was just on "Supergirl."

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:27 (seven years ago) link

I was shocked when I learned that Mister Mxyzptlk's introduction predated the Silver Age

but yeah

Basically adapt any story depicted on http://superdickery.tumblr.com/ and watch the money roll in.

I'm all about Silver Age hikinks too - s'why I've never had any beef at all with the resolution of the first movie's plot. A good version of the double date scene could have been amazing, and one of the most Superman-ish things in any of the films. Oh well.

you can tell Bad Superman is Bad because he is unshaven

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link

and he's drunk!

You can also identify Bad Superman by his tendency to straighten leaning towers.

Superman, King of Pogs

Really want to see grim-faced Henry Cavill sitting there shooting marbles.

He has to modify the beer in order that he can get drunk, but after he sobers up there's still super beer in the taps, and everyone gets drunk and superpowers, leading to carnage and an opportunity to reflect.

Bad Superman blowing out the Olympic torch is some A-level trolling

Neanderthal, Friday, 31 March 2017 17:12 (seven years ago) link

Snyder's Bad Superman puts the Olympic torch out in an orphan's face.

(And the audience is confused because his behavior is largely indistinguishable from the ostensibly good version of Superman.)

I don't understand what that clip is from. I don't see Caesar so I assume it's from the original, but I don't see Marky Mark either. Confused!

hard-pressed to say any of the POTA movies are actually good. the one w the nihilist nuke ending (II?) is certainly batshit enough to be called "interesting".

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 17:34 (seven years ago) link

you and yr ceaseless rongness

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 31 March 2017 17:55 (seven years ago) link

the initial Schaffner/Heston POTA is a blast, esp singing along with Jerry Goldsmith's score.

It's a planet of the apes!
Dirty filthy smelly apes!

(although it's much more impressive on a theater screen, w/ those desert vistas shot by Leon Shamroy)

Original POTA boasts maybe the greatest shot in cinema history:

I've always assumed that had to be intentional. Surely.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 March 2017 18:46 (seven years ago) link

lol yes.

not only does it look and sound great, it is very much classic sci fi. commenting on age and race and class and all kinds of social/political issues through the lens of THE FUTURE.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 19:15 (seven years ago) link

also kind of kick-started the pre-Star Wars era where all sci fi was dystopian commentary

thus necessitating the wookie

it's kind of a shame i limited myself to theatrical series because Leprechaun 4: In Space probably deserved some attention here.
