At least Phantom Menace isn't stretched out to 3 hours for no good reason.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

At least something beat Crystal Skull.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 31 March 2017 01:21 (seven years ago) link

Can't really argue with these results, tbh.

Star Trek: Nemesis could also have been in this poll, if you consider the TNG films their own series. The least successful film in the franchise, and one that hit during a real low point in Star Trek's popularity.

jmm, Friday, 31 March 2017 03:03 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it's pretty hard to sit through. On the other hand, in a series that starts with Generations, where the last entry was Insurrection, expectations have to be pretty fucking low. The rare series where the second is basically the only good one?

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Friday, 31 March 2017 11:55 (seven years ago) link

jeez The Hobbit could have been so good, it just pushed too far into foreboding in one direction and zaniness in the other. and effectively retconning aspects of the narrative to fit in with LOTR was an exceptionally bad idea.

that reminds me that ages ago i downloaded a fan edit of the hobbit that condenses all three of those godforsaken movies into less than three hours but i've never mustered the fortitude to actually get around to watching it

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 31 March 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

I have a similar edit of the SW prequels that works quite well (as it is largely Jar Jar and, to the extent that such a thing is possible, Annie-free).

My opinion of Jackson's entire Middle Earth saga is similar to that of the filmography of Cameron Crowe: where some people see definite highs and lows, I pretty much see all of it as a divertingly MOR way to kill a few (dozen) hours.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 March 2017 13:37 (seven years ago) link

yes otm. admittedly they were pretty pointless and bloated but i enjoyed them. no high fantasy is too much for me.

i still need to see the third Hobbit. i saw the first two in theater. seeing Smaug covered in gold in 3D was worth it.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 13:42 (seven years ago) link

Indiana Jones was lame but it did have some good parts, seeing Indy look at the mushroom cloud was pretty rad, and i liked the alien ending cos it was 1:1 the end to The Fate of Atlantis.

only other movie here i've seen in theater was Superman IV. that movie ruled so hard and as a Canon film should probably get a free pass for being insane.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 13:45 (seven years ago) link

i luv superman iv

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 31 March 2017 15:00 (seven years ago) link

I never bothered with Superman IV but you guys are making me rethink that.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 31 March 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link

it's fucking ridiculous

Superman ends the Cold War by putting all nuclear weapons on Earth in a giant net and throwing it into the sun. and that's like half an hour into the film.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link

Nuclear Man is as "off-brand supervillain" as you could get in the 80s

right down to the generic thug voice

Neanderthal, Friday, 31 March 2017 15:44 (seven years ago) link

DESTROY. SUPERMAN.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Friday, 31 March 2017 15:56 (seven years ago) link

The presence of the core cast, after most were basically chucked for III, makes Supes IV an interesting halfway point between ''it's the classic lineup but everything's gone to shit'' (Indy, Star Wars, Hobbit) and what you would expect from ''Canon got the rights and cranked some insane shit out on the cheap.'' On some level, it still feels like a Superman movie, just... all wrong. Whereas the above, despite Spielberg/Lucas/Jackson, feel totally NOT of a piece with their three predecessors.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

there's a clark/lois moment toward the end of supes iv (when clark is kinda dying from his first fight with nuclear man (sorry lol @ "nuclear man" forever)) that i think is maybe the best thing reeve and kidder ever did together

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:03 (seven years ago) link

xxpost It's a nod to the serials, when instead of employing iconic villains people were familiar with, they chose instead to make Superman Vs. the Venusian Mechanoids (fake example).

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:03 (seven years ago) link

there's also a clark kent/superman double date scene. hijinks ensue

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

that double date scene is nails on a chalkboard IIRC. slightly better if still reflecting a fundamentally misguided idea about what the plot should be: clark going to the gym on a first date with hemingway.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:16 (seven years ago) link

is IV the one w Ducky

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:18 (seven years ago) link

xpost Because if you have superpowers you're trying to hide from others, you naturally want to put yourself in situations which make that as difficult as possible. Like inviting someone on a jog when you have super speed powers.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:19 (seven years ago) link

the double date thing is obviously intended as Silver Age-style hijinks, similar to the good Superman vs. Bad Superman fight in III or spinning the earth backwards in time in I, it's just executed really badly.

(altho tbh I would probably be the lone fan of a Superman movie that was wall-to-wall Silver Age hijinks)

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

Superman gets turned into a baby, Lex Luthor tricks Lois into marrying him, Jimmy Olsen trapped on Bizarro planet, etc.

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

I would stan hard for a Supes movie with Mister Mxyzptlk as the villian, portrayed accurately and not by fucking Howie Mandel or whatever dude was just on "Supergirl."

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:27 (seven years ago) link

I was shocked when I learned that Mister Mxyzptlk's introduction predated the Silver Age

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:32 (seven years ago) link

but yeah

Basically adapt any story depicted on http://superdickery.tumblr.com/ and watch the money roll in.

I'm all about Silver Age hikinks too - s'why I've never had any beef at all with the resolution of the first movie's plot. A good version of the double date scene could have been amazing, and one of the most Superman-ish things in any of the films. Oh well.

hahaha

good Superman vs. Bad Superman fight in III

btw i rewatched all the movies recently and this remains my favorite thing that happens in any of them

lol The King of Marbles

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link

you can tell Bad Superman is Bad because he is unshaven

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link

and he's drunk!

You can also identify Bad Superman by his tendency to straighten leaning towers.

Superman, King of Pogs

Really want to see grim-faced Henry Cavill sitting there shooting marbles.

Dramatic slow-motion closeup of a big ol' aggie bouncing out of the circle.

xxpost Well, there's a difference between Surly & Ornery Bad and Genocidal Fountain of Rage Bad.

Yeah, he replaced Wal-Mart Lad iirc.

He has to modify the beer in order that he can get drunk, but after he sobers up there's still super beer in the taps, and everyone gets drunk and superpowers, leading to carnage and an opportunity to reflect.
