a but (brimstead), Friday, 24 March 2017 22:53 (nine years ago)

sometimes in life we all take a wrong turn

Django Chutney (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 1 April 2017 14:01 (nine years ago)

Damn straight, I just discovered Steve Hoffmann forums and wish I hadn't started up here. They may not be quite as smart but they aren't broken creeps like the swine on ILM. I tried for 20 years with positive and encouraging comments, got a lot of attitude in return. See y'all later

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 2 April 2017 16:33 (nine years ago)

for the record your honour it was not my intention to discourage Mr Galdston

Still waiting for you to ever say anything interesting, funny or smart.

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 5 April 2017 19:16 (nine years ago)

i'll warn you in advance, schmuck

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 April 2017 19:26 (nine years ago)

It's OK, I can easily derive your opinions by spinning the Boring Hot Take Wheel of Fortune. Or throwing a bunch of poetry magnets at a refrigerator. Or reading Greenwald's Twitter feed.

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 5 April 2017 19:28 (nine years ago)

looks like you didn't have second thoughts about these posts

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 19:29 (nine years ago)

Raul Chamgerlain (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 16 April 2017 09:29 (nine years ago)

it's really quite straightforward: the 1st century had only 99 years in deference to our Lord and Saviour, who rose today

The Real Remoaner (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 05:58 (nine years ago)

sadly the balustrade is what you slide down, the banisters are the posts that stick up into it

imago, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:33 (nine years ago)

Brief googling shows me that this is a British v. American thing:

Now here is where it becomes more confusing.

Many Americans — I cannot speak for other countries — also use the word “banister” to refer to the handrail of a staircase.

http://www.kirkmahoney.com/blog/2009/02/baluster-vs-balustrade-vs-banister/

how's life, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:43 (nine years ago)

I think bannister is generally used in the UK to mean handrail also.

cf AA Milne, from "The King's Breakfast": ""Nobody," he said, As he slid down the banisters".

Tim, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:50 (nine years ago)

Yes I decided not to post that ON THIS THREAD because it's so dull.

Tim, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:55 (nine years ago)

also used in a popular Smiths lyric but I refuse to promote far right views

The Remoans of the May (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 13:11 (nine years ago)

I call the handrail the banister or the rail or the handrail. The posts that hold it up are called balusters.

If I were feeling hypercorrect I might say that the handrail and balusters together constitute the banister.

If you are sliding down it, you are sliding down the entire structure, so sliding down the banister is fine either way.

Balustrade is too grand a word for a home. Balustrades are for fairy-tale palaces or dictatorial proclamation-making.

Balustrade is a very woody word
