Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 6 March 2017 00:58 (nine years ago)

he probably thinks that if you're the president you just get some guys, and say to the guys, go in there and tap this, and they install some whatevers, super covertly, and then the president sits there in his office with special headphones

I've been trying to think what exactly Flynn reminds me of. I think there's a specific Orc from the LOTR series that he always reminded me of.

Does it need to be pointed out that "20 Committee" is a WWII reference? 20 = XX in roman numerals = double-cross...

Also for some reason that Nixon tattoo makes me think of Church of the Subgenius

from that WaPo article Ned linked:

Pressed by NBC’s Chuck Todd to explain Trump’s wiretapping claim, Rubio demurred.

“Look, I didn’t make the allegation,” he said. “I’m not the person that went out there and said it.”

Remember last month when Schindler was talking about his super duper secret intel that was going to send all the Trumpies to prison and blah blah blah.

Y'all should probably unfollow him before you get sucked into the liberal-friendly Alex Jones future.

I think the specific Orc I was thinking of was a different one (think he captures Frodo and Sam when they climb the stairsor something) but you can see what i meant from that image you shared.

Trying to think if I was thinking of an actual witch from Jim Henson or gerry Anderson
the 2 images I can find taht relate are these
http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/The-Witches1-635x422-500x332.jpg
for Angelica Huston in the adaptation of Witches taht henson worked on.
I was thinking there was something in the Dark Crystal but witch from that looks very different.

and Gerry Anderson
https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/445318550412996608/rCAR7sep.jpeg
though could have just been imagining what a witch would look like in his later puppet style.

I've been trying to focus lately on the ways in which this clusterfuck could be beneficial in the long run. Part of me thinks that Turnip is such an unhinged and unfiltered exaggeration of every venal thing about the GOP that we may very well reach a tipping point where he ultimately toxifies much of the GOP platform. As we bear witness to the horrorshow of an unshackled GOP platform being put into practice, it feels like there's a shift occurring in the attitude of their opponents from aggrieved resignation to vehement denouncement. We're already seeing this to an extent wrt these town halls where people are decrying basic GOP talking points in a way that wasn't happening previously, but I have to imagine that much of their soft support is going to eventually melt away under these conditions. That rural Midwestern lady might be uncomfortable with particular groups that she's never interacted with directly but she might be more uncomfortable supporting a party that's increasingly associated with, say, anti-Semitic violence and a president who's unwilling to denounce these acts without somebody twisting his arm. Maybe not a perfect example of what I'm trying to get at, but basically: frothing maniacs are increasingly only appealing to other maniacs the longer they froth.

Sure.

The Flautist of Flatus (Old Lunch), Monday, 6 March 2017 15:06 (nine years ago)

i really have no clue how everything will work out w/ trump but at a basic policy level i think things like the ACA repeal and other unpopular policy ideas, whether they are actualized or not, might fuck the GOP a little. bama's gone and it's going to be hard to continue to keep kicking him around when millions of people might lose their insurance. obv a lot depends on how well democrats expose GOP on those issues but we'll see

i should really stop being surprised at the hypocrisy of these assholes but to think the Right has been flinging accusations of Soros-backed paid protestors and then they shamelessly roll out this Astroturfed bullshit.

evol j, Monday, 6 March 2017 15:16 (nine years ago)

sounds like the second iteration of the Muslim ban is being signed today, but nobody has much detail yet except that it's "limited" and no longer includes iraq

art, Monday, 6 March 2017 15:17 (nine years ago)

I really do think Trump's so stupid he thinks this new iteration of the travel ban is going to be applauded as totally rational and justified instead of attacked for being only slightly less unjustified than the previous one.*

*I do realize I am perhaps putting too much faith in the likes of CNN here, they really might be even dumber and might fall for this bullshit.

evol j, Monday, 6 March 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)

> no longer includes iraq

koogs, Monday, 6 March 2017 15:25 (nine years ago)

Lots of people, exposed to unvarnished GOP policy goals, especially if they actually become law, are going to be turned off. A wave election in 2018 is pretty much a sure thing. However, never discount the Democratic party's ability to piss off progressives and the American left by greedily going after more and more of a theoretical "center" that doesn't actually exist.

I worry that in response to all this undiluted wingnuttery plus the regular forgetfulness that, you know, the GOP candidate only won GEORGIA by five points, the actually-really-progressive Dem '16 platform is the one that gets watered down, partially due to the utterly infuriating misconception that a less progressive platform will let Dems "hold on" to "the center" and partially due to the fact that any Dem platform in 2018 or 2020 is going to have to first undo a bunch of awful stuff that this Congress does.
