Hyperbolic headline notwithstanding, this writeup p much nails what I dig about the John Wick movies in particular

that's a good article. i think the John Wick flicks also resemble in some ways the Chow-Yun Fat movie Full Contact, with their revenge arcs, though latter movie doesn't have nearly as much humor. The world created for the movies and the casual way in which its depicted and the offhand manner in which its explained (which is to say not at all) is also pretty key. and the insistence on a color palette revolving around black and blue and red and purple vs teal and orange is vv nice.

A report from February claimed that production on John Wick 3 will take place in Montreal has now been confirmed. This new report also confirms that the sequel's working title is Alpha Cop, with Montreal doubling for New York City. There will also be portions of the production that will be shot in the Big Apple, with other potential shooting locations including Russia, Spain, Morocco and Jordan.

xxposts to Jim in Vancouver -- I'm not saying you should watch it if you're not feeling it. but, the best thing about the movie is that the indignity of that sweet dog's death is 100% channelled through the action of the entire movie, it's not just a throwaway gimmick. imo. so if you've ever wanted someone who did that to a dog to get a comeuppance on the biblical level, this movie sees that through to its excellent conclusion. if you want.

I'll take the pulpy worldbuilding and almost supernatural elements of JW2 over the comparatively glum and straightforward original any day

understandable why they went with the world/mythology building in order to build a franchise but darragh is otm. second one's good, first is better as a standalone movie

plus his car is so damn cool, & I don't give a shit about cars! these movies pwn me for 2 hours

first movie has a *way* better bad guy and i felt like reeves needed that to push against - it felt like he was "beating insurmountable odds" whereas in the second movie he's just mass slaughtering a bunch of redshirt dopes

they're both super fun, though! no question

I found the main bad guys in both movies total bores tbh

aw, i thought blomqvist was great and had way more joie de vivre

in the second movie, i love the way common acts badly

the second one is fun but its v much a "middle movie" and suffers from the usual conplaints of same.

ian mcshane is totally gonna die in the next one right

they're gonna make these till Keanu physically can't anymore AFAICT xp

the main bad guys are both having a lot of fun with the roles i thought though Nyqvist was better in that regard. JW2 is awesome, JW1 is slightly moreso.

in JW1 i think Ruby Rose was fantastic, everyone was really. But I think it gets slightly repetitive in a way the first one does not. but it only starts to feel that way deep into the third act, vs earlier on. It just takes the edge off the film for me. The first one has a better upward movement through the ranks to get to the final showdown, and a more righteous mission.

again this is really an argument I don't like to make since both films are considerably outstanding.

do we know if they're even bothering with a new big bad in JW3? I'm sort of hoping they don't

Bill & Ted's is unwatchable garbage. I know because recently I tried to watch it and it is just... very bad. it is poorly made, there are no actual jokes etc.

JW2 couldn't have the best thing about JW1, the sequence where John Leguizamo slaps the kids and then starts pounding whiskey, knowing what's about to go down, then Viggo explaining things while shirtless Keanu sledgehammers up his past

sorry but nothing in JW1 matches the giddy absurdity of the hilariously deadpan subway "shootout" in the second one

These films are fun when there’s shooting but when they grind to a halt in order to show you the inner workings of hitman hogwarts it’s embarrassing and actively tedious, is my unpopular opinion

idk the cut from Fishburne laughing on the roof to Fishburne laughing (presumably minutes later) in the inner sanctum of his lair is pretty fucking funny imo
